The Promise And Problems Of Pricing Carbon: Theory And Experience, Joseph E. Aldy, Robert N. Stavins
The Promise And Problems Of Pricing Carbon: Theory And Experience, Joseph E. Aldy, Robert N. Stavins
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Because of the global commons nature of climate change, international cooperation among nations will likely be necessary for meaningful action at the global level. At the same time, it will inevitably be up to the actions of sovereign nations to put in place policies that bring about meaningful reductions in the emissions of greenhouse gases. Due to the ubiquity and diversity of emissions of greenhouse gases in most economies, as well as the variation in abatement costs among individual sources, conventional environmental policy approaches, such as uniform technology and performance standards, are unlikely to be sufficient to the task. Therefore, …

Transgender Transitions: Sex/Gender Binaries In The Digital Age, Kay Siebler
Transgender Transitions: Sex/Gender Binaries In The Digital Age, Kay Siebler
English Faculty Publications
Contemporary representations of transgendered people often reinforce rigid gender binaries of masculinity and femininity, leading transgendered individuals to feel they must seek out hormones or surgery to “correctly align” their bodies with their gender. Cultural texts (e.g., films, television, Internet, digital texts) reinforce this “pre-op or post-op” ideology for trans identity. The pre-op or post-op MTF or FTM binary mandates an alignment with the heterosexual gender system (feminine female or masculine male). In this article, the author focuses on trans identities and how representations codify the need or desire for surgery and hormones and examines the paradoxical reification of gender …

This paper presents our solution for the i2b2 sentiment classification challenge. Our hybrid system consists of machine learning and rule-based classifiers. For the machine learning classifier, we investigate a variety of lexical, syntactic and knowledge-based features, and show how much these features contribute to the performance of the classifier through experiments. For the rule-based classifier, we propose an algorithm to automatically extract effective syntactic and lexical patterns from training examples. The experimental results show that the rule-based classifier outperforms the baseline machine learning classifier using unigram features. By combining the machine learning classifier and the rule-based classifier, the hybrid system …

Charge Transfer Embedded-Atom Potentials For Atomistic Simulations Of Amino Acids And Proteins, Amo-Kwao Godwin
Charge Transfer Embedded-Atom Potentials For Atomistic Simulations Of Amino Acids And Proteins, Amo-Kwao Godwin
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
The dynamical simulation of biophysical systems requires force fields (interaction potentials) capable of describing bond formation and breaking and reactive charge transfer. Molecular motor proteins such as kinesin, dynein and myosin have the extraordinary ability of converting chemical energy to mechanical energy by the process of ATP hydrolysis used for motility. This work is motivated by the reactive force field developed recently by Valone and Atlas[1—4], the charge-transfer embedded atom method (CT-EAM). CT-EAM is based on the empirical embedded-atom method (EAM) pioneered by Daw and Baskes[5]. CT-EAM extends the EAM to re- active molecular systems, through a formal basis in …
Product Angular Distributions In The Ultraviolet Photodissociation Of N2O, George C. Mcbane, Reinhard Schinke
Product Angular Distributions In The Ultraviolet Photodissociation Of N2O, George C. Mcbane, Reinhard Schinke
Peer Reviewed Articles
The angular distribution of products from the ultraviolet photodissociation of nitrous oxide yielding O(1D) and N2(X1Σ+g) was investigated using classical trajectory calculations. The calculations modeled absorption only to the 21A'electronic state but used surface-hopping techniques to model nonadiabatic transitions to the ground electronic state late in the dissociation. Observed values of the anisotrophy parameter β, which decrease as the product N2 rotational quantum number jincreases, could be well reproduced. The relatively low observed βvalues arise principally from nonaxial recoil due to the very …
A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis Of The Effects Of School, Community And Individual Factors On Substance Use Among Girls In Rural Counties, Taniesa Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Substance use among adolescent girls in the United States is increasing. In some regions substance use by rural adolescent girls exceeds that of its urban and suburban counterparts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the adequacy of constructs within Catalano, Hawkins, and the Social Development Research Group's (1996) social development model (SDM) as an empirical-based model pertaining to early adolescent girls' pathways to substance use by examining school, community, and individual risk and protective factors. Risk factors are defined as those traits, variables, or vulnerabilities that, if present for a particular individual, increase the likelihood of those individual …

The Jigsaw Man: Puzzling Through The Pieces Of Modern American Manhood, Paul Bennett
Theses and Dissertations
The Jigsaw Man is a personal nonfiction narrative that examines modern American manhood. The author uses personal anecdotes and popular media to discuss manhood as experienced by his generation and those younger, the so-called "preadults" of Generations X, Y, and beyond. This thesis was written as part of the author's preparation for a book proposal, which would expand upon the themes and stories in this thesis.

The objective of this research was to examine whether the Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale, a life event scale, can be used to identify suicide attempters. The Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale's ability to identify suicide attempters was tested in 1183 subjects (478 suicide attempters, 197 psychiatric inpatients, and 508 healthy controls) using the Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis and traditional psychometric methods. The Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis outperformed traditional psychometric approaches (area under the curve: 0.85 vs. 0.78; p < 0.05) and indicated that this scale may be used to identify suicide attempters. The life events that better characterized suicide attempters were change in frequency of arguments, marital separation, and personal injury. The Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale may help identify suicide attempters.
Risky Subjects, Subjects At Risk: Hpv Vaccination And The Neoliberal Turn In Public Health, Anzia Bennett
Risky Subjects, Subjects At Risk: Hpv Vaccination And The Neoliberal Turn In Public Health, Anzia Bennett
American Studies ETDs
This thesis utilizes the example of Gardasil to better understand the dynamics of power at play in discourses of health in the United States, and to identify the neoliberal tenors of some contemporary public health strategies. A neoliberal turn in public health, while not all encompassing, has resulted in distorted and limited conceptions of health that rely on consumerism and notions of personal responsibility. With the example of Gardasil, Merck has deployed age-old tropes that pre-date, and are strengthened by, this neoliberal turn. These tropes--of women and girls as simultaneously at-risk and risky subjects, of young women's bodies in need …
Response Of Moth Assemblages To Pine-Grassland Restoration For Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Kristen Robyn Benjamin
Response Of Moth Assemblages To Pine-Grassland Restoration For Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Kristen Robyn Benjamin
Theses and Dissertations
I examined community composition, species richness, and abundance of forest moths in three restored pine-grasslands and three nearby areas with similar site characteristics but no history of restoration management. My study addressed questions of how restoration practices impact moth species richness and abundance, whether distinct moth communities are associated with restored and unrestored plots, how vegetation has responded to restoration treatments, and how moths have responded to vegetation. I expected that changes in moth community composition could be predicted by host specialization, with species having narrow feeding niches occurring in greatest numbers where essential resources were most abundant. As expected, …

Some Biogeographers, Evolutionists And Ecologists: Chrono-Biographical Sketches, Charles H. Smith, Joshua Woleben, Carubie Rodgers
DLPS Faculty Publications
Each name in the following list of naturalists is linked to a corresponding capsule "chrono-biographical" sketch of that individual prepared by the authors. Coverage extends from approximately 1950 backward in time as far as the eighteenth century; figures from all over the world are included (though there is admittedly a decided Anglo-American bias). The target subject here is biogeography, but this being a broad field there are many persons on the list who are better known as climatologists, zoologists, botanists, ecologists, oceanographers, paleontologists, etc.--in other words, who made their main reputations in cognate disciplines.

An Unusual Case Of Chronic Suppurative Osteomyelitis Of The Mandible, K Ali, A Akram, Mu Akhtar
Peninsula Dental School
Osteomyelitis of the mandible, a serious complication of untreated odontogenic infection has been reported. This case report describes an interesting presentation of chronic suppurative osteomyelitis (CSO) of the mandible in a 13 years old anaemic male patient. Investigations revealed inversion of his permanent teeth leading to trans-cutaneous extra-oral eruption along with marked destruction of mandible on the affected side. The treatment included a pre surgical course of antibiotics followed by the removal of the retained second premolar tooth, surgical debridement of the affected bone, and resection of the cutaneous sinus tract. The post-operative healing was uneventful. A combination of antibiotic …

Events that occur in the early fetal environment have been linked to long-term health and lifespan consequences in the adult. Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which may occur as a result of nutrient insufficiency, exposure to hormones, or disruptions in placental structure or function, may induce the fetus to alter its developmental program in order to adapt to the new conditions. IUGR may result in a decrease in the expression of genes that are responsible for nephrogenesis as nutrients are rerouted to the development of more essential organs. Fetal survival under these conditions often results in low birth weight and a …

A passive optical diode effect would be useful for on-chip optical information processing but has been difficult to achieve. Using a method based on optical nonlinearity, we demonstrate a forward-backward transmission ratio of up to 28 decibels within telecommunication wavelengths. Our device, which uses two silicon rings 5 micrometers in radius, is passive yet maintains optical nonreciprocity for a broad range of input power levels, and it performs equally well even if the backward input power is higher than the forward input. The silicon optical diode is ultracompact and is compatible with current complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processing.
