Nature And Nurture: Revisiting The Infant Adoption Process, Barbara L. Atwell
Nature And Nurture: Revisiting The Infant Adoption Process, Barbara L. Atwell
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
Adopted children constitute approximately two percent of the United States’ childhood population, but are disproportionately represented in mental health settings, where they make up an estimated four to fifteen percent of the population. Science suggests that for those adopted at birth, this discrepancy may be due in part to their abrupt removal from the biological parents. We are now beginning to understand the importance of the bonding that takes place in utero and the infant’s awareness at birth. This article suggests three changes to the infant adoption process to align it with scientific knowledge. First, all adults involved in the …
Recovering Subsidiarity In Family Life Education, Karen Jordan
Recovering Subsidiarity In Family Life Education, Karen Jordan
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
This article provides a rigorous analysis of the legitimacy of continuing to rely on and promote school-based family life education, as a way of addressing concerns associated with sexual activity by adolescents. The issue is crucial because empirical evidence strongly suggests that a school-based approach, regardless of curricular content, has failed. For reasons grounded in law and policy, this article advocates that states should retreat from school-based family life education and, instead, recover the insights of the philosophical principle of subsidiarity. Recovering subsidiarity means fully respecting and giving effect to the parental right and duty to educate children in matters …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Synthetic Substrates For Use In Rigidity Cell Culture Studies Of Valvular Interstitial Cells For Aortic Valve Tissue Engineering, Alexander T. Leonard
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
More than 100,000 Americans each year undergo aortic valve (AV) replacement due to valve failure. An AV can become diseased, impairing the proper function of the valve. Common treatments for a defective valve are either replacement with a decellularized biologic or a synthetic valve. These treatments options are limited by short functional lifetime and thrombogenic surfaces. Tissue engineered heart valve will have the ability to integrate with the surrounding tissue as well as to repair and remodel. However, a greater understanding of valve cell biology is required to induce analogous tissue formation. A diseased valve is associated with stiffening of …

Values-Based Motivational Interviewing : Effectiveness For Smoking Cessation Among New Mexico Veterans, Lavina Sanders
Psychology ETDs
This study evaluated the effectiveness, for smoking cessation, of the Values Card Sort intervention based on the theoretical therapeutic model of Motivational Interviewing. Veterans at the New Mexico Veteran Affairs Healthcare System who elected to participate were randomly assigned to either one session of the MI-based Values Card Sort or one session of an education-based intervention called Preskills Training, which was designed specifically for this research study. All veterans who participated in the study then went through three sessions of the standard smoking cessation psychoeducational group at the VA. It was predicted that veterans who received one session of Values-Based …
Congress's Constitution, Josh Chafetz
Congress's Constitution, Josh Chafetz
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Congress has significantly more constitutional power than we are accustomed to seeing it exercise. By failing to make effective use of its power, Congress has invited the other branches to fill the vacuum, resulting in a constitutional imbalance. This Article considers a number of constitutional tools that individual houses—and even individual members—of Congress, acting alone, can deploy in interbranch conflicts. Although the congressional powers discussed in this Article are clearly contemplated in constitutional text, history, and structure, many of them have received only scant treatment in isolation. More importantly, they have never before been considered in concert as a set …

Dynein Achieves Processive Motion Using Both Stochastic And Coordinated Stepping, Weihong Qiu, Nathan D. Derr, Brian S. Goodman, Elizabeth Villa, David Wu, William Shih, Samara L. Reck-Peterson
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Processivity, the ability of single molecules to move continuously along a track, is a fundamental requirement of cargo-transporting molecular motors. Here, we investigate how cytoplasmic dynein, a homodimeric, microtubule-based motor, achieves processive motion. To do this, we developed a versatile method for assembling Saccharomyces cerevisiae dynein heterodimers, using complementary DNA oligonucleotides covalently linked to dynein monomers labeled with different organic fluorophores. Using two-color, single-molecule microscopy and high-precision, two-dimensional tracking, we find that dynein has a highly variable stepping pattern that is distinct from all other processive cytoskeletal motors, which use 'hand-over-hand' mechanisms. Uniquely, dynein stepping is stochastic when its two …

Comprehensive Survey And Geometric Classification Of Base Triples In Rna Structures, Neocles B. Leontis, Amal S. Abu Almakarem, Anton I. Petrov, Jesse Stombaugh, Craig L. Zirbel
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Base triples are recurrent clusters of three RNA nucleobases interacting edge-to-edge by hydrogen bonding. We find that the central base in almost all triples forms base pairs with the other two bases of the triple, providing a natural way to geometrically classify base triples. Given 12 geometric base pair families defined by the Leontis-Westhof nomenclature, combinatoric enumeration predicts 108 potential geometric base triple families. We searched representative atomic-resolution RNA 3D structures and found instances of 68 of the 108 predicted base triple families. Model building suggests that some of the remaining 40 families may be unlikely to form for steric …

Camera Survey Of Wildlife Corridors Adjacent To Highway 101, Grace K. Mannell, Chelsea E. Rose
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Driving poses a significant threat to safety for both humans and wildlife. Along highway 101 in San Luis Obispo, California, is a stretch of roadway that is exceptionally deadly to mammals such as deer and bears. Roadkill counts and motion-activated cameras have been utilized along this route in a previous study (Perrine and Snyder, 2011) to assist Caltrans in setting up wildlife barriers. We sought to continue this research using remote motion-sensing cameras to monitor wildlife during winter and spring of 2011. We set up cameras at five previously monitored locations that had already been determined to host heavy wildlife …

Challenges Of Being A Black Student Athlete On U.S. College Campuses, Wycliffe W. Njororai Simiyu
Health & Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this Literature review article is to examine the social, cultural, individual and institutional racist factors that pose challenges to many African American college athletes, both men and women, to develop skills outside sports that are necessary to succeed in college and life. The passion for athletics by Black youth has to be positioned within the wider racist environment that one is exposed to while growing up. The dominant presence of Blacks in the high profile sports of football, basketball and track and field while having lower graduation rates compared to White athletes deserves scholarly interrogation. This article …
Phase-Distortion-Robust Voice-Source Analysis, Alan O'Cinneide
Phase-Distortion-Robust Voice-Source Analysis, Alan O'Cinneide
Doctoral
This work concerns itself with the analysis of voiced speech signals, in particular the analysis of the glottal source signal. Following the source-filter theory of speech, the glottal signal is produced by the vibratory behaviour of the vocal folds and is modulated by the resonances of the vocal tract and radiation characteristic of the lips to form the speech signal. As it is thought that the glottal source signal contributes much of the non-linguistic and prosodical information to speech, it is useful to develop techniques which can estimate and parameterise this signal accurately. Because of vocal tract modulation, estimating the …

Hierarchy In Factors Affecting Fish Biodiversity In Floodplain Lakes Of The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Daniel J. Dembkowski, L. E. Miranda
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
River-floodplain ecosystems offer some of the most diverse and dynamic environments in the world. Accordingly, floodplain habitats harbor diverse fish assemblages. Fish biodiversity in floodplain lakes may be influenced by multiple variables operating on disparate scales, and these variables may exhibit a hierarchical organization depending on whether one variable governs another. In this study, we examined the interaction between primary variables descriptive of floodplain lake large-scale features, suites of secondary variables descriptive of water quality and primary productivity, and a set of tertiary variables descriptive of fish biodiversity across a range of floodplain lakes in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley of …

Objective—Ceruloplasmin (Cp) is an acute-phase reactant that is increased in inflammatory diseases and in acute coronary syndromes. Cp has recently been shown to possess nitric oxide (NO) oxidase catalytic activity, but its impact on long-term cardiovascular outcomes in stable cardiac patients has not been explored. Methods and Results—We examined serum Cp levels and their relationship with incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE; death, myocardial infarction [MI], stroke) over 3-year follow-up in 4177 patients undergoing elective coronary angiography. We also carried out a genome-wide association study to identify the genetic determinants of serum Cp levels and evaluate their relationship to prevalent …
Tunnel Vision: A Problem In Academics, Nick A. Nichols
Tunnel Vision: A Problem In Academics, Nick A. Nichols
The Intellectual Standard
Inspiration is just as important to scientists as it is to artists. Einstein's theories of special relativity were famously drawn from his boyhood question, "What would riding upon a beam of light be like?" Archimedes came to his famous eureka moment, and uncovered the principle of buoyancy, in a bath. Without moments of inspiration like these, humanity would not have made the progress that it has. Taking a broad view of the world has historically been a large part of the academic world; however, there is still a constant struggle with academic tunnel vision. When one becomes obsessed with a …

Upon Ras activation, ODC (ornithine decarboxylase) is markedly induced, and numerous studies suggest that ODC expression is controlled by Ras effector pathways. ODC is therefore a potential target in the treatment and prevention of Ras-driven tumours. In the present study we compared ODC mRNA translation profiles and stability in normal and Ras12V-transformed RIE-1 (rat intestinal epithelial) cells. While translation initiation of ODC increased modestly in Ras12V cells, ODC mRNA was stabilized 8-fold. Treatment with the specific mTORC1 [mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) complex 1] inhibitor rapamycin or siRNA (small interfering RNA) knockdown of mTOR destabilized the ODC mRNA, but rapamycin …

Gray Matters: Autism, Impairment, And The End Of Binaries, Kevin Barry
San Diego Law Review
First diagnosed by psychiatrist Leo Kanner in 1943, autism has exploded into the public consciousness in recent years. From science to science fiction, academia to popular culture, autism has captured the world's attention and imagination. Autism has also ignited a fierce debate among stakeholders who seek to define its essence. Many parents of autistic children regard autism as a scourge and press for a cure. The "neurodiversity movement," comprised mostly of autistic adults, regards autism as a different way of being worthy of respect and even celebration. The autism war is well underway, and given autism's swelling ranks and proposed …

Effects Of Metallic, Semiconducting, And Insulating Substrates On The Coupling Involving Radiative Polaritons In Thin Oxide Films, Anita J. Vincent-Johnson, Kyle A. Vasquez, Giovanna Scarel, James S. Hammonds Jr., Mathieu Francoeur
Department of Physics and Astronomy - Faculty Scholarship
Through simulations, this work explores the effects of conducting, semiconducting, and insulating substrates on the absorption of infrared radiation by radiative polaritons in oxide layers with thicknesses that range from 30 nm to 9 μm. Using atomic layer deposition, oxide layers can be formed in the nanometer scale. Our results suggest that the chemistry and conductivity of the substrate determine the amount of absorption by radiative polaritons in oxide layers thinner than the skin depth. The effects of the chemistry and conductivity of the substrate are especially effective for oxide films thinner than about 250 nm, which we label as …
