Flow Dynamics Of An Accumulation Basin: A Case Study Of Upper Kahiltna Glacier, Mount Mckinley, Alaska, Seth Campbell, K Kreutz, Erich Osterberg, Steven Arcone, Cameron P. Wake, Kevin Volkening, Dominic Winski Feb 2012

Flow Dynamics Of An Accumulation Basin: A Case Study Of Upper Kahiltna Glacier, Mount Mckinley, Alaska, Seth Campbell, K Kreutz, Erich Osterberg, Steven Arcone, Cameron P. Wake, Kevin Volkening, Dominic Winski

Earth Sciences

We interpreted flow dynamics of the Kahiltna Pass Basin accumulation zone on Mount McKinley, Alaska, USA, using 40, 100 and 900 MHz ground-penetrating radar profiles and GPS surface velocity measurements. We found dipping, englacial surface-conformable strata that experienced vertical thickening as the glacier flowed westward from a steep, higher-velocity (60 m a–1) region into flat terrain associated with a 908 bend in the glacier and lower velocities (15 m a–1) to the south. Stratigraphy near the western side of the basin was surface-conformable to 170 m depth and thinned as flow diverged southward, down-glacier. We found complex strata beneath the …

Melt Regimes, Internal Stratigraphy, And Flow Dynamics Of Three Glaciers In The Alaska Range, Seth Campbell, K Kreutz, Erich Osterberg, Steven Arcone, Cameron P. Wake, Douglas Introne, Kevin Volkening, Dominic Winski

Earth Sciences

We used ground-penetrating radar (GPR), GPS and glaciochemistry to evaluate melt regimes and ice depths, important variables for mass-balance and ice-volume studies, of Upper Yentna Glacier, Upper Kahiltna Glacier and the Mount Hunter ice divide, Alaska. We show the wet, percolation and dry snow zones located below 2700 m a.s.l., at 2700 to 3900 m a.s.l. and above 3900 m a.s.l., respectively. We successfully imaged glacier ice depths upwards of 480 m using 40–100 MHz GPR frequencies. This depth is nearly double previous depth measurements reached using mid-frequency GPR systems on temperate glaciers. Few Holocene-length climate records are available in …

The Evidence-Based Pharmacological Treatment Of Paediatric Adhd., Brigette S. Vaughan, John S. March, Christopher J. Kratochvil Feb 2012

The Evidence-Based Pharmacological Treatment Of Paediatric Adhd., Brigette S. Vaughan, John S. March, Christopher J. Kratochvil

Journal Articles: Psychiatry

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common in children, adolescents, and adults, with extensive research establishing it as a valid neurobiological disorder. Without intervention, ADHD can result in significant impairment throughout the lifespan for the individuals it afflicts. Fortunately, multiple evidence-based options are available for the treatment of ADHD, including several efficacious pharmacotherapies. The role of medication, including stimulants as well as non-stimulants, is well-documented by an extensive body of literature. Although there may be less enthusiasm for behavioural and other psychosocial interventions as stand-alone treatments for moderate to severe ADHD, they are recommended as first-line treatment for ADHD management …

Bone Morphogenetic Protein 4 Promotes Vascular Smooth Muscle Contractility By Activating Microrna-21 (Mir-21), Which Down-Regulates Expression Of Family Of Dedicator Of Cytokinesis (Dock) Proteins, Hara Kang, Brandi N. Davis-Dusenbery, Peter H. Nguyen, Ashish Lal, Judy Lieberman, Linda Van Aelst, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata

Biology

The bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) signaling pathway plays a critical role in the promotion and maintenance of the contractile phenotype in vascular smooth muscle cell (vSMC). Misexpression or inactivating mutations of the BMP receptor gene can lead to dedifferentiation of vSMC characterized by increased migration and proliferation that is linked to vascular proliferative disorders. Previously we demonstrated that vSMCs increase microRNA-21 (miR-21) biogenesis upon BMP4 treatment, which induces contractile gene expression by targeting programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4). To identify novel targets of miR-21 that are critical for induction of the contractile phenotype by BMP4, biotinylated miR-21 was expressed …

Pten Regulation Of Local And Long-Range Connections In Mouse Auditory Cortex, Qiaojie Xiong, Hysell V. Oviedo, Lloyd C. Trotman, Anthony M. Zador

Publications and Research

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are highly heritable developmental disorders caused by a heterogeneous collection of genetic lesions. Here we use a mouse model to study the effect on cortical connectivity of disrupting the ASD candidate gene PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10). Through Cre-mediated recombination, we conditionally knocked out PTEN expression in a subset of auditory cortical neurons. Analysis of long-range connectivity using channelrhodopsin-2 revealed that the strength of synaptic inputs from both the contralateral auditory cortex and from the thalamus onto PTEN-cko neurons was enhanced compared with nearby neurons with normal PTEN expression. Laser-scanning photostimulation showed …

Structural Characterization Of Human Uch37, E. S. Burgie, C. Bingman, Ameet Soni, G. N. Phillips Jr. Feb 2012

Structural Characterization Of Human Uch37, E. S. Burgie, C. Bingman, Ameet Soni, G. N. Phillips Jr.

Computer Science Faculty Works

Uch37 is a de-ubiquitylating enzyme that is functionally linked with the 26S proteasome via Rpn13, and is essential for metazoan development. Here, we report the X-ray crystal structure of full-length human Uch37 at 2.95 Å resolution. Uch37's catalytic domain is similar to those of all UCH enzymes characterized to date. The C-terminal extension is elongated, predominantly helical and contains coiled coil interactions. Additionally, we provide an initial characterization of Uch37's oligomeric state and identify a systematic error in previous analyses of Uch37 activity. Taken together, these data provide a strong foundation for further analysis of Uch37's several functions.

Probabilistic Ensembles For Improved Inference In Protein-Structure Determination, Ameet Soni, J. Shavlik

Computer Science Faculty Works

Protein X-ray crystallography — the most popular method for determining protein structures — remains a laborious process requiring a great deal of manual crystallographer effort to interpret low-quality protein images. Automating this process is critical in creating a high-throughput protein-structure determination pipeline. Previously, our group developed ACMI, a probabilistic framework for producing protein-structure models from electron-density maps produced via X-ray crystallography. ACMI uses a Markov Random Field to model the three-dimensional (3D) location of each non-hydrogen atom in a protein. Calculating the best structure in this model is intractable, so ACMI uses approximate inference methods to estimate the optimal structure. …

A Study Of The Impact Of Single-Gender Classes On Middle School Students In An Urban Setting, Deniese Barnett-Cooper Feb 2012

A Study Of The Impact Of Single-Gender Classes On Middle School Students In An Urban Setting, Deniese Barnett-Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

With the passing of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and the levels of accountability that it has placed upon educators and school districts regarding student performance on standardized assessments, there has been a surfeit of initiatives and options to address appropriate prescriptions for academically ailing students. A potentially dramatic turnaround came in March 2004, when the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) issued proposals that permitted public single-gender schools and classes with few limitations. Additionally, within the past decade, the release of restrictions of Title IX, which originally prohibited the separation of genders, facilitated opportunities to implement single-gender schools and classes …

Nested Canalyzing Depth And Network Stability, Lori Layne, Elena Dimitrova, Matthew Macauley Feb 2012

Nested Canalyzing Depth And Network Stability, Lori Layne, Elena Dimitrova, Matthew Macauley

Publications

We introduce the nested canalyzing depth of a function, which measures the extent to which it retains a nested canalyzing structure. We characterize the structure of functions with a given depth and compute the expected activities and sensitivities of the variables. This analysis quantifies how canalyzation leads to higher stability in Boolean networks. It generalizes the notion of nested canalyzing functions (NCFs), which are precisely the functions with maximum depth. NCFs have been proposed as gene regulatory network models, but their structure is frequently too restrictive and they are extremely sparse. We find that functions become decreasingly sensitive to input …

Signifying The Place Of Unforgettable Memory: Atrocity And Trauma In A Post-Conflict Landscape, Ralph J. Hartley Feb 2012

Signifying The Place Of Unforgettable Memory: Atrocity And Trauma In A Post-Conflict Landscape, Ralph J. Hartley

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

After active inter-group lethal violence subsides places at which atrocities occurred are often assigned significance, reflecting an altered social topography influenced by ideology that may foster the hardening of socio-ethnic boundary distinctions. While using a comparativist approach, this paper explores the relationships between socio-cultural trauma, places of atrocity, and socio-political polarization. Two sites in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda, where highly publicized massacres occurred, illustrate the power of place significance in social environments vulnerable to flare-ups of violent conflict.

Vegfa Family Isoforms Regulate Spermatogonial Stem Cell Homeostasis In Vivo, Kyle C. Caires, Jeanene M. Clopton, Andrea S. Cupp, Derek J. Mclean

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of the present study was to investigate vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) isoform regulation of cell fate decisions of spermatogonial stem cells (SSC) in vivo. The expression pattern and cell-specific distribution of VEGF isoforms, receptors, and coreceptors during testis development postnatal d 1–180 suggest a nonvascular function for VEGF regulation of early germ cell homeostasis. Populations of undifferentiated spermatogonia present shortly after birth were positive for VEGF receptor activation as demonstrated by immunohistochemical analysis. Thus, we hypothesized that proangiogenic isoforms of VEGF (VEGFA164) stimulate SSC self-renewal, whereas antiangiogenic isoforms of VEGF (VEGFA165b) …

Tillage And Crop Residue Removal Effects On Evaporation, Irrigation Requirements, And Yield, Simon Van Donk, Norman L. Klocke Feb 2012

Tillage And Crop Residue Removal Effects On Evaporation, Irrigation Requirements, And Yield, Simon Van Donk, Norman L. Klocke

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Irrigators in the western Great Plains and other irrigated regions face water restrictions caused by decreased well capacity, water allocations imposed by water policy, and/or rising energy costs. These growers require water management practices that optimize grain production. When not enough water is available to produce full yields, the goal for water management is to maximize transpiration and minimize nonessential water losses such evaporation of soil water.

It is generally believed that increasing crop residue levels leads to reduced evaporation. However, crop residue that is removed from the field after harvest is gaining value for use in livestock rations and …
