Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Via Exposure And Response Prevention, Dyona Augustin Feb 2012

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Via Exposure And Response Prevention, Dyona Augustin

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, otherwise known as OCD, affects millions of people across the globe every year; and the obsessions/compulsions associated with this disorder can have a negative impact on one’s day to day living (Clark, 2000). Seeing that many people suffer from this disorder, researchers have attempted to determine which treatment methods (e.g., behavioral or pharmacological) are more effective at treating the symptoms/behaviors associated with it. One cognitive-behavioral technique that has shown a lot of promise is exposure and response (or ritual) prevention (ERP) (Allen, 2006). Although ERP may not be 100% effective at treating the symptoms of OCD, the research …

A Subgroup Of Sgs3-Like Proteins Act Redundantly In Rna-Directed Dna Methylation, Meng Xie, Guodong Ren, Pedro Costa-Nunes, Olga Pontes, Bin Yu Feb 2012

A Subgroup Of Sgs3-Like Proteins Act Redundantly In Rna-Directed Dna Methylation, Meng Xie, Guodong Ren, Pedro Costa-Nunes, Olga Pontes, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Plant specific SGS3-like proteins are composed of various combinations of an RNA-binding XS domain, a zinc-finger zf-XS domain, a coil–coil domain and a domain of unknown function called XH. In addition to being involved in de novo 2 (IDN2) and SGS3, the Arabidopsis genome encodes 12 uncharacterized SGS3-like proteins. Here, we show that a group of SGS3-like proteins act redundantly in RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathway in Arabidopsis. Transcriptome co-expression analyses reveal significantly correlated expression of two SGS3-like proteins, factor of DNA methylation 1 (FDM1) and FDM2 with known genes required for RdDM. The fdm1 and fdm2 double mutations …

Preparation And Rapid Analysis Of Antibacterial Silver, Copper And Zinc Doped Sol–Gel Surfaces, Swarna Jaiswal, Brendan Duffy, Patrick Mchale

Articles

The colonisation of clinical and industrial surfaces with microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant strains, has promoted increased research into the development of effective antibacterial and antifouling coatings. This study describes the preparation of metal nitrate (Ag, Cu, Zn) doped methyltriethoxysilane (MTEOS) coatings and the rapid assessment of their antibacterial activity using polyproylene microtitre plates. Microtitre plate wells were coated with different volumes of liquid sol–gel and cured under various conditions. Curing parameters were analysed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and visual examination. The optimum curing conditions were determined to be 50–70 °C using a volume of 200 μl. The coated wells were challenged …

Comparison Of Sensory, Physiological, Personality, And Cultural Attributes In Regular Spicy Food Users And Non-Users, Mary-Jon Ludy, Richard D. Mattes

Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications

Some individuals savor spicy foods, while others avoid them. Reasons underlying this range of hedonic responses are unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore the basis for individual differences in preference for spicy foods. Regular spicy food users ( n= 13) and non-users (n= 12) were characterized for selected sensory, physiological, personality, and cultural attributes. Individual differences between users and non-users were primarily related to sensory and cultural attributes (i.e., a higher proportion of users reported consuming spicy foods since childhood and users rated spicy foods as more palatable and were better able to discriminate this burn than …

Inhibitors Of Membranous Adenylyl Cyclases, Roland Seifert, Gerald H. Lushington, Tung-Chung Mou, Andreas Gille, Stephen R. Sprang Feb 2012

Inhibitors Of Membranous Adenylyl Cyclases, Roland Seifert, Gerald H. Lushington, Tung-Chung Mou, Andreas Gille, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Membranous adenylyl cyclases (mACs) constitute a family of nine isoforms with different expression patterns. Studies with mAC gene knockout mice provide evidence for the notion that AC isoforms play distinct (patho)physiological roles. Consequently, there is substantial interest in the development of isoform-selective mAC inhibitors. Here, we review the current literature on mAC inhibitors. Structurally diverse inhibitors targeting the catalytic site and allosteric sites (e.g. the diterpene site) have been identified. The catalytic site of mACs accommodates both purine and pyrimidine nucleotides, with a hydrophobic pocket constituting a major affinity-conferring domain for substituents at the 2'- and 3'-O-ribosyl position of nucleotides. …

Predicting The Physiological Performance Of Ectotherms In Fluctuating Thermal Environments, Michael W. Sears, A C. Niehaus, M J. Angilletta, C E. Franklin, R S. Wilson Feb 2012

Predicting The Physiological Performance Of Ectotherms In Fluctuating Thermal Environments, Michael W. Sears, A C. Niehaus, M J. Angilletta, C E. Franklin, R S. Wilson

Publications

Physiological ecologists have long sought to understand the plasticity of organisms in environments that vary widely among years, seasons and even hours. This is now even more important because human-induced climate change is predicted to affect both the mean and variability of the thermal environment. Although environmental change occurs ubiquitously, relatively few researchers have studied the effects of fluctuating environments on the performance of developing organisms. Even fewer have tried to validate a framework for predicting performance in fluctuating environments. Here, we determined whether reaction norms based on performance at constant temperatures (18, 22, 26, 30 and 34°C) could be …

Epidermal Growth Factor Induction Of Front-Rear Polarity And Migration In Keratinocytes Is Mediated By Integrin-Linked Kinase And Elmo2, Ernest Ho, Lina Dagnino Feb 2012

Epidermal Growth Factor Induction Of Front-Rear Polarity And Migration In Keratinocytes Is Mediated By Integrin-Linked Kinase And Elmo2, Ernest Ho, Lina Dagnino

Paediatrics Publications

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent chemotactic and mitogenic factor for epidermal keratinocytes, and these properties are central for normal epidermal regeneration after injury. The involvement of mitogen-activated protein kinases as mediators of the proliferative effects of EGF is well established. However, the molecular mechanisms that mediate motogenic responses to this growth factor are not clearly understood. An obligatory step for forward cell migration is the development of front-rear polarity and formation of lamellipodia at the leading edge. We show that stimulation of epidermal keratinocytes with EGF, but not with other growth factors, induces development of front-rear polarity and …

Leptospire Genomic Diversity Revealed By Microarray-Based Comparative Genomic Hybridization, Broderick Eribo, Sirima Mingmongkolchai, Tingfen Yan, Padunsri Dubbs, Karen Nelson

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Comparative genomic hybridization was used to compare genetic diversity of five strains of Leptospira (Leptospira interrogans serovars Bratislava, Canicola, and Hebdomadis and Leptospira kirschneri serovars Cynopteri and Grippotyphosa). The array was designed based on two available sequenced Leptospira reference genomes, those of L. interrogans serovar Copenhageni and L. interrogans serovar Lai. A comparison of genetic contents showed that L. interrogans serovar Bratislava was closest to the reference genomes while L. kirschneri serovar Grippotyphosa had the least similarity to the reference genomes. Cluster analysis indicated that L. interrogans serovars Bratislava and Hebdomadis clustered together first, followed by L. interrogans serovar Canicola, …

Midgut And Fat Body Bacteriocytes In Neotropical Cerambycid Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), Olga Calderon, Amy Berkov Feb 2012

Midgut And Fat Body Bacteriocytes In Neotropical Cerambycid Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), Olga Calderon, Amy Berkov

Publications and Research

Xylophagous insects derive nutrients from intractable substrates by producing or ingesting cellulolytic enzymes, or by maintaining associations with symbiotic microbes. Wood-boring cerambycid beetle larvae sometimes house maternally-transmitted endosymbiotic yeasts that are presumed to provide their hosts with nutritional beneÞts. These are thought to be absent from species in the large subfamily Lamiinae; nevertheless yeasts have been repeatedly isolated from the guts of neotropical lamiines. The objective of this study was to conduct transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of cerambycid larval midgut tissues to determine if gut yeasts were intracellular, or simply present in the gut lumen. Nine cerambycid larvae were …

Measurement Methods Of Electron Emission Over A Full Range Of Sample Charging, R. Hoffmann, John R. Dennison Feb 2012

Measurement Methods Of Electron Emission Over A Full Range Of Sample Charging, R. Hoffmann, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Spacecraft charging codes require accurate models of electron yields as a function of accumulated charge to correctly predict the charge build up on spacecraft. The accumulated charge creates equilibrium surface potentials on spacecraft resulting from interactions with the space plasma environment. There is, however, a complex relation between these emission properties and the charge built up in spacecraft insulators.

This paper focuses on different methods appropriate to determine the fundamental electronic material property of total electron yield as the materials accumulate charge. Three methods for determining the uncharged total yield are presented:

(i) The DC Continuous Beam Method is a …

Charge Enhanced Contamination And Environmental Degradation Of Misse-6 Suspecs Materials, John R. Dennison, Amberly Evans, Danielle Fulmer, Joshua L. Hodges

All Physics Faculty Publications

The effects of prolonged exposure to the LEO space environment and charge-enhanced contamination on optical, thermal, and electron emission and transport properties of common spacecraft materials have been investigated by comparing pre- and post-flight characterization measurements. The State of Utah Space Environment and Contamination Study (SUSpECS) deployed in March 2008 on board the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE-6) payload, was exposed for ~18 months on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS), and was retrieved in September 2009. A total of 165 samples were mounted on three separate SUSpECS panels on the ram and wake sides on the …

True Integrated Weed Management, Stephen L. Young Feb 2012

True Integrated Weed Management, Stephen L. Young

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Using the simplest of definitions, integrated weed management has been described as “putting components [of weed control] together, not taking them apart.” Yet, weed science has stopped at the “field edge” in assembling the components into a truly integrated approach. What is keeping weed scientists from developing real integrated weed control regardless of space and time? The answer to this question lies with our colleagues in the engineering and computer science fields, who have made significant advances in developing automated machinery for real-time detection and control of weeds in cropping systems. By using the latest technologies that can quickly identify …

Analyzing Effects Of Naturally Occurring Missense Mutations, Zhe Zhang, Maria A. Miteva, Lin Wang, Emil Alexov Feb 2012

Analyzing Effects Of Naturally Occurring Missense Mutations, Zhe Zhang, Maria A. Miteva, Lin Wang, Emil Alexov

Publications

Single-point mutation in genome, for example, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) or rare genetic mutation, is the change of a single nucleotide for another in the genome sequence. Some of them will produce an amino acid substitution in the corresponding protein sequence (missense mutations); others will not. This paper focuses on genetic mutations resulting in a change in the amino acid sequence of the corresponding protein and how to assess their effects on protein wild-type characteristics. The existing methods and approaches for predicting the effects of mutation on protein stability, structure, and dynamics are outlined and discussed with respect to their underlying …

Gold Ion–Angiotensin Peptide Interaction By Mass Spectrometry, Jenny Lee '13, Lasanthi P. Jayathilaka, Shalini Gupta, Jin-Sheng Huang, Bao- Shiang Lee

Student Publications & Research

Stimulated by the interest in developing gold compounds for treating cancer, gold ion– angiotensin peptide interactions are investigated by mass spectrometry. Under the experimental conditions used, the majority of gold ion–angiotensin peptide complexes contain gold in the oxidation states I and III. Both ESI-MS and MALDI-TOF MS detect singly/multiply charged ions for mononuclear/multinuclear gold-attached peptides, which are represented as [peptide+a Au (I)+b Au(III)+(e - a -3b) H]e+, where a,b≥0 and e is charge. ESI-MS data shows singly/multiply charged ions of Au(I)-peptide and Au(III)-peptide complexes. This study reveals that MALDITOF MS mainly detects singly charged Au(I)-peptide complexes, presumably due to the …

Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: Serum procalcitonin levels have been used as a biomarker of invasive bacterial infection and recently have been advocated to guide antibiotic therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, rigorous studies correlating procalcitonin levels with microbiologic data are lacking. Acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) have been linked to viral and bacterial infection as well as noninfectious causes. Therefore, we evaluated procalcitonin as a predictor of viral versus bacterial infection in patients hospitalized with AECOPD with and without evidence of pneumonia.

Methods: Adults hospitalized during the winter with symptoms consistent with AECOPD underwent extensive testing for viral, bacterial, …

Pt (Iv) Complexes As Prodrugs For Cisplatin, Yi Shi, Shu-An Liu, Deborah J. Kerwood, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak

Chemistry - All Scholarship

The antitumor effects of platinum(IV) complexes, considered prodrugs for cisplatin, are believed to be due to biological reduction of Pt(IV) to Pt(II), with the reduction products binding to DNA and other cellular targets. In this work we used pBR322 DNA to capture the products of reduction of oxoplatin, c,t,c-[PtCl 2(OH) 2(NH 3) 2], 3, and a carboxylate-modified analog, c,t,c-[PtCl 2(OH)(O 2CCH 2CH 2CO 2H)(NH 3) 2], 4, by ascorbic acid (AsA) or glutathione (GSH). Since carbonate plays a significant role in the speciation of platinum complexes in solution, we …

Manipulating Protein Conformations By Single-Molecule Afm-Fret Nanoscopy, Yufan He, Maolin Lu, Jin Cao, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Combining atomic force microscopy and fluorescence resonance energy transfer spectroscopy (AFM-FRET), we have developed a single-molecule AFM-FRET nanoscopy approach capable of effectively pinpointing and mechanically manipulating a targeted dye-labeled single protein in a large sampling area and simultaneously monitoring the conformational changes of the targeted protein by recording single-molecule FRET time trajectories. We have further demonstrated an application of using this nanoscopy on manipulation of single-molecule protein conformation and simultaneous single-molecule FRET measurement of a Cy3-Cy5-labeled kinase enzyme, HPPK (6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin pyrophosphokinase). By analyzing time-resolved FRET trajectories and correlated AFM force pulling curves of the targeted single-molecule enzyme, we are able …
