Food Insecurity In America: A Call To Action, Jim Weill Feb 2012

Food Insecurity In America: A Call To Action, Jim Weill

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

When 1 in 6 people in the country is living in a food insecure household, that is an outrage. A country as wealthy as ours– wealthy enough to end hunger even in hard times like those we have been experiencing– should not countenance the moral blight of hunger. Those of us who work to reduce and eventually end hunger in this country cannot succeed, however, by making moral arguments alone. What is needed in addition to move voters, policymakers and institutions to act is a strong evidence base that establishes the causes of hunger, the consequences of hunger for individuals …

The Psychology Of Mediation: Issues Of Self And Identity And The Idr Cycle, Elizabeth E. Bader Feb 2012

The Psychology Of Mediation: Issues Of Self And Identity And The Idr Cycle, Elizabeth E. Bader

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Issues of self and identity raise profound and often painful questions about who we are. Psychoanalytic developmental theory considers these questions by analyzing the way the sense of self develops in childhood. On the other hand, many spiritual traditions insist that however it develops, the In recent years, there have been some important attempts to bridge the gap between these two positions. Yet, the nature of the self and its identity still remains a fundamental mystery. This article considers the self from these perspectives, and others, including neuroscience and social psychology, within the context of mediation. On a psychological level, …

The Strategic Relationship Between Ethics And Dispute Resolution: What Every Ceo Should Know, Mary L. Walker, R. Philip Deavel Feb 2012

The Strategic Relationship Between Ethics And Dispute Resolution: What Every Ceo Should Know, Mary L. Walker, R. Philip Deavel

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

This article advocates that there is a dynamic relationship between a values-based ethics program and a commitment to dispute resolution that can revolutionize the way we think about both. The United States Air Force is a global organization with many relationships, including those with other governments, other federal agencies, corporate contractors and its members and employees. Hence, these concepts are not academic to us-they are the lifeblood that allows us to successfully accomplish our mission. But they also have implications for our corporate partners. Why would we have an interest in how private corporations approach the subjects of ethics and …

Using Adr Principles To Resolve Environmental Disputes: How Mediated Settlements Have Helped Struggling Cercla Survive , Jamie R. Adams Feb 2012

Using Adr Principles To Resolve Environmental Disputes: How Mediated Settlements Have Helped Struggling Cercla Survive , Jamie R. Adams

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

The goal of this article is to show that the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution ("ADR") principles has made the remediation of numerous hazardous waste sites possible, and has thus enabled the struggling program to continue benefiting Americans everywhere. First, this article provides background information regarding the enactment of the Comprehensive Environmental Clean-up and Liability Act ("CERCLA") and its successor, the Superfund Amendments Reauthorization Act ("SARA"). Second, it explains why using ADR principles, instead of litigation, are vital methods of resolving CERCLA disputes. Third, three examples of major Superfund sites that were successfully cleaned up due to the use of …

Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou Feb 2012

Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou

The Hilltop Review

Aviation fuels commonly used today are extracted from the kerosene fraction of the crude oil that is distilled between the gasoline and the diesel. Crude oil is not renewable and the world oil reserve is generally believed to be on the decline. In 2006, 6.3% of the world's refinery production was used for aviation fuel (Nygren et. al., 2009). At an estimated rate of 3% increase of fuel demand per year, aviation use alone will consume the world fuel production by 2026. Therefore, there is a need for the aviation industry to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and, perhaps, …

Academic Achievement Of Children In Single Parent Homes: A Critical Review, Mark S. Barajas Feb 2012

Academic Achievement Of Children In Single Parent Homes: A Critical Review, Mark S. Barajas

The Hilltop Review

In the United States, almost half of all children by age 15 will have lived in a single-parent family. Many authors have documented differences between children raised in father-absent and father-present homes. A few researchers have focused on resiliency and the strengths of single parent homes. Despite calls for a greater emphasis on discovering strengths, the majority of research concerning single parenthood has focused on the disadvantages faced by children raised in the absence of their father. This paper summarizes current research, discuss problems with that body of work, and suggests areas for further study.

A Rose By Any Other Name: State Criminality And The Limits Of Social Learning Theory, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw Feb 2012

A Rose By Any Other Name: State Criminality And The Limits Of Social Learning Theory, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw

The Hilltop Review

Over the past thirty years, social learning theory has emerged as one of the top criminological theories of the time. Capitalizing on Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory, social learning theory provided the means for a quantitative assessment of Sutherland’s propositions. Advanced largely by Ronald Akers, the vast majority of research conducted on social learning theory has been limited to self-report studies of adolescents and college students, largely due to convenience. The limitations of the methods developed to empirically test social learning theory combined with the difficulty of gaining access to people in positions of power, has been the primary impediment …

Mousetraps And How To Avoid Them: The Convergence Of Utilitarian And Scientific Cases For Limiting The Mouse Model In Biomedical Research, Cynthia Townley, Brett Lidbury Feb 2012

Mousetraps And How To Avoid Them: The Convergence Of Utilitarian And Scientific Cases For Limiting The Mouse Model In Biomedical Research, Cynthia Townley, Brett Lidbury

Between the Species

The primary aim of biomedical research is to discover and develop new knowledge to advance human medicine. Frequently a ‘mouse model’ is taken to be a necessary step towards understanding a disease, biological mechanism or intervention. We argue for caution with respect to the mouse model: theoretical reasons, meta-analyses of empirical data, and viable alternatives all support a more restricted use of animals in laboratories than is current practice. On its own terms, a utilitarian scientific justification for using animals in biomedical research converges more closely with welfarist claims than is usually recognised.

Identification Of In Vivo Disulfide Conformation Of Trpa1 Ion Channel, Liwen Wang, Teresa L. Cvetkov, Mark R. Chance, Vera Y. Moiseenkova-Bell

Faculty Scholarship

TRPA1 (transient receptor potential ankyrin 1) is an ion channel expressed in the termini of sensory neurons and is activated in response to a broad array of noxious exogenous and endogenous thiol-reactive compounds, making it a crucial player in chemical nociception. A number of conserved cysteine residues on the N-terminal domain of the channel have been identified as critical for sensing these electrophilic pungent chemicals, and our recent EM structure with modeled domains predicts that these cysteines form a ligand-binding pocket, allowing for the possibility of disulfide bonding between the cysteine residues. Here, we present a comprehensive mass spectrometry investigation …

Krüppel-Like Factor 4 Regulates Intestinal Epithelial Cell Morphology And Polarity, Tianxin Yu, Xi Chen, Wen Zhang, Juan Li, Ren Xu, Timothy C Wang, Walden Ai, Chunming Liu Feb 2012

Krüppel-Like Factor 4 Regulates Intestinal Epithelial Cell Morphology And Polarity, Tianxin Yu, Xi Chen, Wen Zhang, Juan Li, Ren Xu, Timothy C Wang, Walden Ai, Chunming Liu

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is a zinc finger transcription factor that plays a vital role in regulating cell lineage differentiation during development and maintaining epithelial homeostasis in the intestine. In normal intestine, KLF4 is predominantly expressed in the differentiated epithelial cells. It has been identified as a tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer. KLF4 knockout mice demonstrated a decrease in number of goblet cells in the colon, and conditional ablation of KLF4 from the intestinal epithelium led to altered epithelial homeostasis. However, the role of KLF4 in differentiated intestinal cells and colon cancer cells, as well as the mechanism by which …

Comparison Of Steriplex™ Hc And Sodium Hypochlorite Cytotoxicity On Primary Human Gingival Fibroblasts, Jesse Harris Feb 2012

Comparison Of Steriplex™ Hc And Sodium Hypochlorite Cytotoxicity On Primary Human Gingival Fibroblasts, Jesse Harris

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the cytotoxic effects of STERIPLEX™ HC (sBioMed, Orem, UT) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on human fibroblast cells in vitro. Fibroblasts exposed to various concentrations of NaOCl or STERIPLEX™ HC were visualized via light microscopy. Dilutions of either NaOCl or STERIPLEX™ HC that did not appear to disrupt the integrity of the cells were recorded for further analysis. Cells were then cultured and grown to confluence in five separate plates. A void was created down the middle of each plate. If the cells were viable, cellular confluence was seen. If nonviable, confluence of the cells did not occur. …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Body size plays a critical role in mammalian ecology and physiology. Previous research has shown that many mammals became smaller during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), but the timing and magnitude of that change relative to climate change have been unclear. A high-resolution record of continental climate and equid body size change shows a directional size decrease of ~30% over the first ~130,000 years of the PETM, followed by a ~76% increase in the recovery phase of the PETM. These size changes are negatively correlated with temperature inferred from oxygen isotopes in mammal teeth and were probably driven by shifts …

The Antimicrobial Effect Of Steriplex Hc In Comparison With Sodium Hypochlorite On Enterococcus Faecalis, Jonathan Coudron Feb 2012

The Antimicrobial Effect Of Steriplex Hc In Comparison With Sodium Hypochlorite On Enterococcus Faecalis, Jonathan Coudron

Theses and Dissertations

The study objective was to compare the antimicrobial activity of STERIPLEX™ HC with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at different dilutions (50%, 25%, 10%, 1%, 0.1%) and different time intervals (1, 3, 5 minutes) on Enterococcus faecalis. All data was analyzed using an ANOVA. The 50%, 25%, and 10% dilutions of both disinfectants reduced the colony forming unit (CFU) count to below the limit of detection (50 CFU/ml) after one minute. The 1% dilutions at each of the time intervals show NaOCl was significantly more effective than STERIPLEX™ HC (all Ps < .0001) in reducing the CFU/ml count. The 0.1% dilutions of NaOCl and STERIPLEX™ HC at 1 minute, were not different (P = 0.7808), while at 3 minutes and 5 minutes NaOCl was significantly more effective (P = 0.0098 and P < .0001, respectively).
