"Over their life time, CF patients experience multiple infections by various pneumoniacausing bacteria [6]. With more patients surviving to adulthood, chronic infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa are coming to the forefront as a leading cause of death [7]. Problems presented by infected CF lung are multi-dimensional; the electrolyte balance and pH of the fluids are abnormal. The mucus is thick and of an alternative composition compared to normal lung and may contribute to colonization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa [2, 3, 5]. As such, research is multi-pronged and includes gene therapy to correct the defective protein, amelioration of inflammatory response and thinning of …

When Staying Discovery Stays Justice: Analyzing Motions To Stay Discovery When A Motion To Dismiss Is Pending, Kevin J. Lynch Mar 2012

When Staying Discovery Stays Justice: Analyzing Motions To Stay Discovery When A Motion To Dismiss Is Pending, Kevin J. Lynch

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Due to the important costs and benefits of discovery, decisions that affect the scope, timing, or availability of discovery are enormously consequential. For civil litigation in federal court, district and magistrate judges make many decisions about discovery that affect the cases before them. They decide the length and number of depositions that may be taken, compel or protect against the production of large numbers of documents and electronic data searches, serve as gatekeepers for expert witness testimony, and even decide whether the parties may take discovery at all until any motions to dismiss have been resolved. This Article focuses squarely …

Electrophysiological Responses To Threat In Youth With And Without Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Damion J. Grasso Mar 2012

Electrophysiological Responses To Threat In Youth With And Without Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Damion J. Grasso

UCHC Articles - Research

The current study was designed to examine event-related brain potentials and autonomic responses to pictures indicating threat, relative to non-threat, and acoustic startle reflexes in traumatized youth diagnosed with PTSD, relative to non-exposed children, before and after receiving psychotherapy. Children in the control group were individually yoked and demographically matched to the PTSD group. Both groups displayed enhanced late positive potentials and more prolonged heart rate deceleration to pictures indicating threat, relative to non-threat, and larger skin conductance responses to pictures indicating threat, relative to non-threat, at time one. At time two, controls appeared to habituate, as reflected by an …

Virtual Cell: Computational Tools For Modeling In Cell Biology, James C. Schaff, Boris M. Slepchenko, Diana C. Resasco, Fei Gao, Frank Morgan, Igor L. Novak

UCHC Articles - Research

The Virtual Cell (VCell) is a general computational framework for modeling physico-chemical and electrophysiological processes in living cells. Developed by the National Resource for Cell Analysis and Modeling at the University of Connecticut Health Center, it provides automated tools for simulating a wide range of cellular phenomena in space and time, both deterministically and stochastically. These computational tools allow one to couple electrophysiology and reaction kinetics with transport mechanisms, such as diffusion and directed transport, and map them onto spatial domains of various shapes, including irregular three-dimensional geometries derived from experimental images. In this article, we review new robust computational …

Physics Publications

This paper describes an advanced laboratory course in acoustics, specifically targeted for students with an interest in engineering applications at a school with a strongly integrated industrial co-op program. The laboratory course is developed around a three-pronged approach to problem solving that combines and integrates theoretical models, computational models, and experimental data. The course is structured around modules that begin with fundamental concepts and build laboratory skills and expand the knowledge base toward a final project. Students keep a detailed laboratory notebook, write research papers in teams, and must pass laboratory certification exams. This paper describes the course layout and …

Evaluating Modeled Intra- To Multidecadal Climate Variability Using Running Mann–Whitney Z Statistics, Steven A. Mauget, Eugene C. Cordero, Patrick T. Brown Mar 2012

Evaluating Modeled Intra- To Multidecadal Climate Variability Using Running Mann–Whitney Z Statistics, Steven A. Mauget, Eugene C. Cordero, Patrick T. Brown

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

An analysis method previously used to detect observed intra- to multidecadal (IMD) climate regimes was adapted to compare observed and modeled IMD climate variations. Pending the availability of the more appropriate phase 5 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP-5) simulations, the method is demonstrated using CMIP-3 model simulations. Although the CMIP-3 experimental design will almost certainly prevent these model runs from reproducing features of historical IMD climate variability, these simulations allow for the demonstration of the method and illustrate how the models and observations disagree. This method samples a time series’s data rankings over moving time windows, converts those ranking sets …

The Creation Of An Anodic Bonding Device Setup And Characterization Of The Bond Interface Through The Use Of The Plaza Test, Tim M. Mccrone Mar 2012

The Creation Of An Anodic Bonding Device Setup And Characterization Of The Bond Interface Through The Use Of The Plaza Test, Tim M. Mccrone

Master's Theses

Recently there has been an increased focus on the use of microfluidics for the synthesis of different products. One of the products proposed for synthesis is quantum dots. Microfluidics often uses Polydimethylsiloxane for structure in microfluidic chips, but quantum dots use octadecene in several synthesis steps. The purpose of this work was to create a lab setup capable of anodically bonding 4” diameter wafers, and to characterize the bond formed using the Plaza test chip so that microfluidic devices using glass and silicon as substrates could be created.

Two stainless steel electrodes placed on top of a hot plate were …

Room Temperature Syntheses Of Entirely Diverse Substituted Β-Fluorofurans, Li Yan, Kraig A. Wheeler, Roman Dembinski Mar 2012

Room Temperature Syntheses Of Entirely Diverse Substituted Β-Fluorofurans, Li Yan, Kraig A. Wheeler, Roman Dembinski

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Synthesis of highly substituted 3-fluorofurans is reported. The sequence began with preparation of tertbutyldimethylsilyl alk-1-en-3-yn-1-yl ethers from 1,4-disubstituted alk-3-yn-1-ones. Subsequent fluorination of alkenynyl silyl ethers with Selectfluor gave 2-fluoroalk-3-yn-1-ones in almost quantitative yield. Subsequent 5-endo-dig cyclizations using chlorotriphenylphosphine gold(I)/silver trifluoromethanesulfonate (5/5 mol%), N-bromo- or N-iodosuccinimide and gold(I) chloride/zinc bromide (5/20 mol%), all at room temperature, provided a facile method for the generation of substituted 3-fluoro-, 3-bromo-4-fluoro-, and 3-fluoro-4-iodofurans in good yields. Also, 2,2-difluoroalk-3-yn-1-ones were prepared by fluorination of alk-3-yn-1-ones under organocatalytic conditions. The structures of (Z)-tertbutyldimethylsilyl but-1-en-3-yn-1-yl ether, 3-bromo-4-fluorofuran, and 3-fluoro-4-(phenylethynyl)furan were confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Unreconstructable Pilon Fractures: An Overview Of Two Surgical Approaches And Their Outcomes, Lauren Caradonna Mar 2012

Unreconstructable Pilon Fractures: An Overview Of Two Surgical Approaches And Their Outcomes, Lauren Caradonna

Capstone Research Projects

Pilon fractures, or distal tibial fractures, are difficult injuries to treat, not only because of their propensity to sustain highly articulated fractures, but also because of the delicacy of the traumatized soft tissues (Johnson). Oftentimes the fracture is too comminuted to repair with open reduction and internal fixation alone (See Figure 1). The current practice of treating highly comminuted tibial fractures involves placing the patient in an external fixator which allows isolation of the tibio-talar joint so that the soft tissues can heal. After sufficient healing time the internal fixation and reduction is performed. Although this method is an improvement …

Reconsidering Antitrust's Goals, Maurice Stucke Mar 2012

Reconsidering Antitrust's Goals, Maurice Stucke

Scholarly Works

Antitrust policy today is an anomaly. On the one hand, antitrust is thriving internationally. On the other hand, antitrust’s influence has diminished domestically. Over the past thirty years, there have been fewer antitrust investigations and private actions. Today the Supreme Court complains about antitrust suits, and places greater faith in the antitrust function being subsumed in a regulatory framework. So what happened to the antitrust movement in the United States?

Two import factors contributed to antitrust policy’s domestic decline. The first is salience, especially the salience of the U.S. antitrust goals. In the past thirty years, enforcers and courts abandoned …
