Recently, structural variation in the genome has been implicated in many complex diseases. Using genomewide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays, researchers are able to investigate the impact not only of SNP variation, but also of copy-number variants (CNVs) on the phenotype. The most common analytic approach involves estimating, at the level of the individual genome, the underlying number of copies present at each location. Once this is completed, tests are performed to determine the association between copy number state and phenotype. An alternative approach is to carry out association testing first, between phenotype and raw intensities from the SNP array …
Interactions Between Multiple Recruitment Drivers: Post-Settlement Predation Mortality And Flow-Mediated Recruitment, Antony M. Knights, Louise B. Firth, Keith Walters
Interactions Between Multiple Recruitment Drivers: Post-Settlement Predation Mortality And Flow-Mediated Recruitment, Antony M. Knights, Louise B. Firth, Keith Walters
Marine Science
Background: Dispersal is a primary driver in shaping the future distribution of species in both terrestrial and marine systems. Physical transport by advection can regulate the distance travelled and rate of propagule supply to a habitat but post-settlement processes such as predation can decouple supply from recruitment. The effect of flow-mediated recruitment and predation on the recruitment success of an intertidal species, the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica was evaluated in two-replicated field experiments. Two key crab species were manipulated to test predator identity effects on oyster mortality. Findings: Recruitment was ~58% higher in high flow compared to low flow, but …

Response Of Channel × Blue Hybrid Catfish To Chronic Diurnal Hypoxia, Bartholomew W. Green, Steven D. Rawles, Benjamin H. Beck
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Performance traits and metabolic responses of the channel × blue hybrid catfish (Ictalurus punctatus female × I. furcatus male) in response to chronic diurnal hypoxia were evaluated in this 197-d study. Sixteen 0.1-ha earthen ponds were stocked with 15,169 hybrid catfish/ha (47 g/fish) and managed to maintain the minimum dissolved oxygen concentration greater than 12%, 24%, 36%, or 48% of saturation. Growth and yield of channel × blue hybrid catfish were significantly related to minimum nightly dissolved oxygen concentration. The cumulative effect of nocturnal dissolved oxygen concentration and the duration of exposure to hypoxia (termed dissolved oxygen minutes) …
Crystal Engineering Of Multi-Component Crystal Forms: The Opportunities And Challenges In Design, Heather Dawn Marie Clarke
Crystal Engineering Of Multi-Component Crystal Forms: The Opportunities And Challenges In Design, Heather Dawn Marie Clarke
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is heightened interest to diversify the range of crystal forms exhibited by active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the pharmaceutical industry. The crystal form can be regarded as the Achilles' heel in the development of an API as it directly impacts the physicochemical properties, performance and safety of the API. This is of critical importance since the crystal form is the preferred method of oral drug delivery by industry and regulatory bodies. The ability to rationally design materials is a lucrative avenue towards the synthesis of functional molecular solids with customized physicochemical properties such as solubility, bioavailability and stability. Pharmaceutical …
Regulation Of Natural Killer Cells: Ship-1, 2b4, And Immunomodulation By Lenalidomide, Nicole Renee Fortenbery
Regulation Of Natural Killer Cells: Ship-1, 2b4, And Immunomodulation By Lenalidomide, Nicole Renee Fortenbery
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Natural Killer cells (NK) are critical components of the innate immune system. Often referred to by their morphology, these large granular lymphocytes (LGLs) are bone marrow-derived lymphocytes and can be found throughout the body. NK cells reside in the liver, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT). Importantly, NK cells also circulate throughout the blood where they function as surveyors of the body and are armed to eliminate malignant, infected, damaged, or foreign cells.
NK cells function by a dual receptor system. That is, NK receptors are broadly categorized as inhibitory or activating. It is a fine balance, …
Diversification Of Organic Cropping Systems With Cover Crop Mixtures: Influence On Weed Communities, Soil Microbial Community Structure, Soil Moisture And Nitrogen, And Crop Yield, Samuel E. Wortman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Organic grain cropping systems typically depend on intensive mechanical cultivation for weed control and manure or compost applications to meet plant nutrient demands. However, cover crops may contribute to weed suppression and soil fertility, potentially increasing crop yield and sustainability of the system. The utility of individual cover crop species have been well documented, but the agronomic benefits of diverse cover crop mixtures have received less attention. Cover crop mixtures are an appealing option for farmers, as increasing species diversity has been shown to increase resource-use efficiency, stability, resiliency, and productivity of plant communities. Despite the growing interest in cover …
The Impact Of Media On Body Images Of Young Women, Brittani D. Wynn
The Impact Of Media On Body Images Of Young Women, Brittani D. Wynn
Research Papers
Extensive literature has focused on the media influences on the body images of women. This is a quantitative study that examines the relationship between the impact that media has had on women and their body image as adolescents, as well as their current relationship with the media and their body image. It also examines if women feel that the media accurately portrays women in magazines and TV shows, and if they are influenced by the images in following them and changing their lifestyles to look like them. One hundred and fifty-one women studying at a university were surveyed over the …

Notes On Distribution And Hosts Of Hylesinus Mexicanus (Wood) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), A Pest On Olea Europaea Linnaeus, Jesús Rómero Napoles, Thomas H. Atkinson
Insecta Mundi
Significant new host and distribution records are presented for Hylesinus mexicanus (Wood) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), including its pest potential on cultivated olives. Hylesinus mexicanus is similar to H. fasciatus LeConte and information presented here suggests that the distinctiveness of these two species needs to be re-examined.

The Integration Of The Ethic Of The Respectful Use Of Animals Into The Law, David Favre
The Integration Of The Ethic Of The Respectful Use Of Animals Into The Law, David Favre
Between the Species
This article develops an ethical construct of “respectful use” to govern the conduct of humans toward animals. The scope of the terms “use” and “respectful” are developed. Some guidelines for the discernment of respectful use of animals are suggested. Then the status of animals within the legal system is briefly considered. Within the law, the socially defined key term is “unnecessary” rather than respectful. Finally, the newer legal standard of duty of care is shown to be approaching the ethical concept of respectful use.

United States Public Health Resources
MicroRNA (miRNA) deregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Using a high-throughput quantitative real-time PCR platform, we performed miRNA profiling on cyclin D1- positive MCL (n=30) and cyclin D1-negative MCL (n=7) and compared them with small lymphocytic leukemia/lymphoma (SLL, n=12), aggressive B-cell lymphomas (n=138), normal B-cell subsets and stromal cells. We identified a 19-miRNA classifier which included six upregulated miRNAs (miR-135a, miR-708, miR-150, miR-363, miR-184, miR-342-5p) and 13 downregulated miRNAs, that was able to distinguish MCL from other aggressive lymphomas with >90% probability. Some of these upregulated miRNAs are highly expressed in naïve B-cells. MicroRNA …

Evaluation And Verification Of Washing Practices On Pathogen Recovery And Survival On Produce, Wilbert Long Iii
Student Theses and Dissertations
Food sanitation is a very important issue that affects the global market. Proper sanitation can help reduce microbial pathogens which influence public health by causing illnesses and death and financial resources (e.g. time lost at work, loss of produce due to spoilage, and recalls). In a number of incidences, foods may be reported as extremely susceptible to pathogens and are denoted as potentially hazardous by health organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state institutions. Pathogenic contamination of foods may be caused by factors that include growing environment, handling, processing, produce structure, water activity (the amount of …
