Jury Selection In Aging America: The New Discrimination?, Max B. Rothman, Burton D. Dunlop, Gretchen M. Hirt
Jury Selection In Aging America: The New Discrimination?, Max B. Rothman, Burton D. Dunlop, Gretchen M. Hirt
Marquette Elder's Advisor
This article examines the effects on the judicial system of entrenched stereotypes of the elderly. These stereotypes may be working to drive discriminatory laws, policies, and practices that serve to disenfranchise them of their right to participate in the judicial system by serving as jurors. The article also discusses the implications of this discrimination on the judicial system.

Science On Law's Terms: Implications Of Procedural Legitimacy On Scientific Evidence, Nayha Acharya
Science On Law's Terms: Implications Of Procedural Legitimacy On Scientific Evidence, Nayha Acharya
LLM Theses
Scientific evidence is relied on more and more in litigation. Discussions and debates aimed at enabling courts to make the best use scientific evidence are increasingly critical. This thesis adds the perspective of procedural legitimacy to the science and law discussion. Procedural Legitimacy is the concept that consistent adherence to legal procedure maintains the overall legitimacy of the legal system, and the validity of its outcomes. I argue that the integrity of legal procedures must be maintained where scientific evidence is presented, so that judicial decisions that rely on scientific evidence are legitimate.

The Role Of The Black Church In Addressing Ipv At The Community Level, Monika Black
The Role Of The Black Church In Addressing Ipv At The Community Level, Monika Black
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a signific.ant concern within the Black community and, in particular, for Black women. However, IPV is not always identified as a critical issue for the Black community to collectively respond to and/ or adequately address. Without an appropriate support system, many survivors dealing with IPV are left without sufficient resources. The purpose of this study was to conduct an organizational level analysis of the role the urban Black church can play in providing a continuum of supportive services for primarily heterosexual female survivors of IPV in the Black: community. For this study.twenty-five church leaders completed …
Effectiveness Of Housing First For Non-Chronically Homeless Individuals Who Are High Utilizers Of Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment, Molly Brown
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Chronic homelessness refers to a subset of the homeless population that experiences significant, long-term patterns of housing instability and disabling conditions, such as mental illness. Individuals who are chronically homeless are particularly vulnerable to poor physical and psychological health and often over-utilize costly emergency services. Programs providing housing and support services, referred to as Housing First, have been developed to improve housing stability among people who are chronically homeless by offering permanent housing without preconditions of sobriety or psychiatric treatment compliance.
Housing First is traditionally provided to individuals with a history of chronic homelessness. However, it may also be an …
Continuity Of Conduct And Substance Use Disorders Among Adolescents In The One Year And Two Years Following Exposure To Substance Abuse Treatment, Brian Mcmanus
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The current study utilized a sample of 138 adolescents from a short-term inpatient chemical dependency recovery hospital. Analyses utilized scales from the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs (GAIN), a semi-structured interview that was administered multiple times over the two years after treatment intake. Analyses examined the persistence of substance abuse, conduct disorder symptomatology, delinquent behavior, and mental distress following treatment. A primary goal of the study was to examine whether adolescents with severe conduct disorder (i.e., those engaging in behaviors causing considerable harm to others) followed different trajectories than their mild/moderate counterparts. This inquiry was predicated largely on research that …

Cold Case Homicides: An Examination Of Clearance Factors, Matthew M. Lunn
Cold Case Homicides: An Examination Of Clearance Factors, Matthew M. Lunn
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The killing of one individual by another is something in our culture that garners a lot of attention from the media as well as community leaders. Law enforcement agencies have a duty to find resolution to these crimes. Yet, even with the rapid growth of forensics and the technology associated with it, there are still cases that go unsolved. These cases are commonly referred to as cold case homicides. In order to evaluate whether forensic evidence or investigative technique plays a larger role in the clearance of cold case homicides, a retrospective study was conducted to examine previously solved cold …

The Effects Of Prison Program Participation On Recidivism Of Ex-Offenders In Mississippi, Chad Lamar Stocks
The Effects Of Prison Program Participation On Recidivism Of Ex-Offenders In Mississippi, Chad Lamar Stocks
Theses and Dissertations
Correctional education research strongly suggests that an increase in inmates’ education will reduce recidivism rates. This study utilized logistic regression techniques to investigate the effects of prison education program participation on recidivism and employment rates. Using this method made it possible to conclude that inmates who participated in prison intervention/educational programs were significantly less likely to recidivate. The purpose of this study was to identify to what extent the Mississippi Department of Corrections’ (MDOC’s) intervention/educational programs reduce recidivism. The pre-existing data used were historical information collected as part of a longitudinal study on Mississippi inmates since 2000. The data were …

Sharing Science: A Study On The Effects Of Informal Science Education Outreach With Elementary Students, Martha Jo Vargas, Diane L. Marshall, Teresa E. Sheldahl
Biology ETDs
Science education reform has prompted scientists, engineers, and politicians alike to act on the growing need for improved educational programs in the STEM fields. Informal science programs that provide an educational experience outside of a traditional classroom and involve students on real-life and hands-on experiments are among these initiatives. It is hypothesized that informal science programs may increase students interest and performance in science and related subjects. Here we evaluate this by assessing the impacts of one such program, the Junior Scientist Outreach Program (JSOP), a weeklong, free-of-cost camp with fourth and fifth grade students in a predominately Hispanic/Latino community …

Book Review: Elders On Trial: Age And Ageism In The American Legal System, Olivia M. Wong
Marquette Elder's Advisor
In the first part of the book Howard Eglit discusses ageism and the changing of attitudes toward citizens as they age. The second part explores aging as it relates to the legal system, including issues of particular importance to seniors, increasing litigation involving the elderly, lawyer/elderly client issues, possible discrimination in jury selection, and the issues of competence of elderly judges.
