Razing Lafitte: Defending Public Housing From A Hostile State, Leigh Graham
Razing Lafitte: Defending Public Housing From A Hostile State, Leigh Graham
Publications and Research
The contentious politics of the demolition of Lafitte public housing in post- Katrina New Orleans and its replacement with mixed-income properties is a telling case of the strategic conflicts housing advocates face in public housing revitalization. It reveals how the qualified outcomes of HOPE VI interact with local institutional and historical circumstances to confound the equity and social justice goals of housing and community development advocates. It shows the limits to public housing revitalization as an urban recovery strategy when hostile government leadership characterizes a region, and the state is recast as an adversary rather than revitalization partner. This case …
Subtle And Overt Forms Of Islamophobia: Microaggressions Toward Muslim Americans, Kevin L. Nadal, Katie E. Griffin, Sahran Hamit, Jayleen Leon, Michael Tobio, David P. Rivera
Subtle And Overt Forms Of Islamophobia: Microaggressions Toward Muslim Americans, Kevin L. Nadal, Katie E. Griffin, Sahran Hamit, Jayleen Leon, Michael Tobio, David P. Rivera
Publications and Research
Previous research suggests that microaggressions, or subtle and covert manifestations of bias, are commonplace in the life experience of people of color, women, and sexual minorities. However, there is a dearth of research focusing on microaggressions toward people from religious minority groups. Using a qualitative approach and directed content analysis with Muslim American participants (N=10), six themes emerged: 1) Endorsing Religious Stereotypes of Muslims as Terrorists, 2) Pathology of the Muslim Religion, 3) Assumption of Religious Homogeneity, 4) Exoticization, 5) Islamophobic and Mocking Language, and 6) Alien in Own Land. Implications for Muslim mental health are discussed.
Juvenile Justice In Louisiana: An Exploratory Study Of Trends Surrounding Juvenile Incarceration, Sabrina Michelle Whitney
Juvenile Justice In Louisiana: An Exploratory Study Of Trends Surrounding Juvenile Incarceration, Sabrina Michelle Whitney
LSU Master's Theses
In the State of Louisiana, one of the major problems surrounding youth is juvenile delinquency. Several studies have been conducted regarding juvenile delinquency, however, actual research pertaining to recidivism among youth offenders who were later incarcerated as an adult vs. those who were not incarcerated as an adult are limited. For this study, chi-square analyses were conducted to analyze the association between six variables and recidivism. The age of first OJJ contact was the only variable that was not statistically significant. Such knowledge is crucial for research and policy formation at the local, state, and national levels for positive progression …

The Influence Of Parental Gender On The Type Of Communication Between Incarcerated Parents And Their Children, Sarah Renee Lazzari
The Influence Of Parental Gender On The Type Of Communication Between Incarcerated Parents And Their Children, Sarah Renee Lazzari
Dissertations and Theses
The number of children in the United States with an incarcerated parent continues to rise. Currently, more than 1.7 million children have at least one incarcerated parent. In addition, research has found that children with criminally involved parents are at a higher risk of also becoming offenders (Glaze & Maruschak, 2010). Research has shown that incarcerated parents' abilities to maintain communication with their children may decrease negative behaviors while incarcerated and may decrease the negative effects of being removed from their families. The current study utilizes secondary data to explore the types of communication incarcerated parents use in order to …

Post-Racialism And Searches Incident To Arrest, Frank Rudy Cooper
Post-Racialism And Searches Incident To Arrest, Frank Rudy Cooper
Scholarly Works
For 28 years the Court held that an officer's search incident to arrest powers automatically extended to the entire passenger compartment of a vehicle. In 2009, however, the Arizona v. Gant decision held that officers do not get to search a vehicle incident to arrest unless they satisfy (1) the Chimel v. California Court's requirement that the suspect has access to weapons or evanescent evidence therein or (2) the United States v. Rabinowitz Court's requirement that the officer reasonably believe evidence of the crime of arrest will be found therein. While many scholars read Gant as a triumph for civil …

The Analysis Of How Single-Gender Eighth Grade Science Classrooms In A Magnet School Will Impact Student Achievement And Behavior, Susan Ellen Weiss
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to provide a choice for parents to understand how their child may learn better, plus to show whether a student in a single-gender classroom was more successful with regards to grades, test scores and behavior. The teachers involved in the analysis received a chance to view the results of how the single-gender students did compared to other students in mixed classrooms. The entire teaching staff had the chance to train and use the single-gender strategies with their classes to see if it assisted them, as well.
There was training sessions developed for the teachers who …

Cost As A Sentencing Factor: Missouri's Experiment, Chad W. Flanders
Cost As A Sentencing Factor: Missouri's Experiment, Chad W. Flanders
All Faculty Scholarship
In sentencing offenders, should judges take into account the different costs of possible punishments? In 2010, Missouri gave sentencing judges, in addition to information about the nature and severity of the offense and the criminal history of the offender, the price tag of various punishments: prison cost about $17,000 a year, compared to probation, which is much cheaper (about $7000 per year). Judges were allowed, even encouraged, to base their sentences on how much it each sentence would cost the state. The move was a subject of considerable national and local controversy.
This essay represents the first sustained look at …

The Penal Order: Prosecutorial Sentencing As A Model For Criminal Justice Reform?, Stephen C. Thaman
All Faculty Scholarship
This chapter traces the history of the penal order from its earliest roots through its consolidation as a normal alternative form of procedure in Germany. It compares the types of penal order procedures found in modern criminal procedure codes, and it compares penal orders with other “consensual” procedural modes that also involve considerable prosecutorial influence in determination of the level of guilt and punishment: diversion, pleas and stipulations of guilt, and abbreviated trials based on the contents of the preliminary investigation dossier. Finally, it explores whether the penal order, could eventually become a model for the consensual resolution of all …

Evaluating The Recidivism Rates For Parolees Enrolled In M-Coit, A Community Mental Health/ Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Pamela J. Walsh, David Atkinson
Michigan Journal of Public Health
This paper focuses on an evaluation of recidivism rates of parolees with severe and persistent mental illness enrolled in a mental health/ substance abuse treatment program (M-COIT) at a community mental health center in southeastern Michigan. The two partners in the study were a community mental health center located in a city bordering the southern part of Detroit and Eastern Michigan University located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The purpose of the study was to identify the recidivism rates and factors that affected these rates for parolees who participated in the M-COIT Program. This was a retrospective medical record review. The practical …
