Attendance Rates Of Special Populations In One Rural County, Julie Bright

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this current study is to determine if a difference exists in the attendance rates for special education students and low socioeconomic status students when compared to their peers who do not have these designations. Honor As Property, Johanna E. Bond Jan 2012

Honor As Property, Johanna E. Bond

Scholarly Articles

This Article is the first to use a property lens to explore the social construction of honor within legal systems around the world. The Article makes the claim that the law in many countries has implicitly treated honor as a form of property and has made legal and social allowances for men who seek to reclaim honor property through violence. The Article expands the boundaries of the existing scholarship concerning honor-related violence by exploring the intersections between social constructions of honor and social constructions of property. Using a property lens to analyze the relationship between honor, patriarchal control, and law …

Juror Privacy In The Sixth Amendment Balance, Melanie D. Wilson Jan 2012

Juror Privacy In The Sixth Amendment Balance, Melanie D. Wilson

Scholarly Articles

Some eight million citizens report for jury duty every year. Arguably, jury duty is one of the most significant opportunities to participate in the democratic process. For the accused, the jury acts as an indispensable safeguard against government overreaching. One might expect, therefore, that our justice system would treat potential jurors with care and tact. The opposite is true. During voir dire, prospective jurors are required to share insights into their own lives, quirks, proclivities, and beliefs. Litigants have probed jurors’ sexual orientation, criminal histories, criminal victimization, health, family relations, and beyond. A few scholars have chided the system for …

Punishment And Reform, Steven Sverdlik Jan 2012

Punishment And Reform, Steven Sverdlik

Philosophy Research

Reformist ideas in the philosophy of punishment can be traced back to Plato. However, it is only in the late 19th century that explicitly reformist ‘theories’ are discussed by philosophers, and in the 20th century that they are worked out at length. The conception of reform has recently undergone important changes. Contemporary writers who are apparently reformist utilize use an enriched moral conception of reform, which conceives of it in terms of repentance for wrongdoing and a commitment to obey the law for moral reasons. This departs from an earlier conception that places less emphasis on repentance and …

History Of Emotional And Physical Abuse And Parenting, Mayra Sanchez Jan 2012

History Of Emotional And Physical Abuse And Parenting, Mayra Sanchez

McNair Scholars Journal

Childhood abuse is a social problem that is associated with many negative outcomes later in life such as an increased risk for suicide attempts, depression, and problems with communication skills. Because physical and emotional abuse is significantly correlated, it is often difficult to determine the impact of the physical versus emotional aspects of the maltreatment. Thus, this study explored the extent to which physical and emotional abuse is each associated with parenting attitudes, disciplinary choices, and risk for later abusive parenting. This study also assessed the extent to which deficits in parental empathy that may result from having had a …

“The Abomination Of Mankind”: Anti-Chinese Sentiment And The Borders Of Belonging In San Francisco’S Chinatown, Rachel G. Shuen Jan 2012

“The Abomination Of Mankind”: Anti-Chinese Sentiment And The Borders Of Belonging In San Francisco’S Chinatown, Rachel G. Shuen

Honors Thesis Collection

My project builds upon historical studies about anti-Chinese racism and exclusion by addressing the creation of a problematic police force, the Chinatown Squad, which marked a racialized people and neighborhood for surveillance and discipline. The inauguration of the Chinatown Squad reflected important shifts in the policies of the municipal government and the San Francisco Police Department. Examining the expansion of the police force in the name of public safety alongside the municipally-directed policing of a racialized neighborhood will complicate our historical understanding of anti-Chinese rhetoric and violence.

An Examination Of The Practitioners' Role In Promoting Compliance With Participants In The Irish Drug Treatment Court, James N. O'Sullivan

Dissertations

The study examines the Irish Drug Treatment Court (IDTC) programme and specifically its practitioners‟ role in promoting offender compliance, which is essential to the success of community supervision and community punishment programmes. Existing literature and research was studied extensively, paying particular attention to compliance and legitimacy theory as well as the challenges of addiction and offending in the overall equation of compliance. Qualitative research methods were utilised with non-participatory observation of IDTC team meetings and court sittings, and semi-structured interviews with practitioners. Five IDTC professionals were interviewed and their experience, skills, education and opinion contributed extensively to the study‟s aims …

Jury Justice From The Classic Greeks, Andrew M. Whittaker Jan 2012

Jury Justice From The Classic Greeks, Andrew M. Whittaker

The Corinthian

Trial by jury is a constitutionally guaranteed right, and the concept of being judged by one’s peers is a foundational principle in Western society. It is assumed that criminal cases are best and most equitably decided by juries and general consensus is that a judicial case decided by a jury is inherently more acceptable than any alternative. With that said, the foundations for the modern Western judicial practice, like most other essential practices, rests in the Golden Age of Athens and Greece. While the chain of descent is long and varied, in Greece, one can find the first trace of …

Constitutional Limits On The Right Of Government Investigators To Interview And Examine Alleged Victims Of Child Abuse Or Neglect, Teri Dobbins Baxter Jan 2012

Constitutional Limits On The Right Of Government Investigators To Interview And Examine Alleged Victims Of Child Abuse Or Neglect, Teri Dobbins Baxter

Scholarly Works

Investigating allegations of child abuse or neglect presents unique challenges, particularly if parents or guardians are the alleged perpetrators. Those accused of harming the children are in a position to prevent the victims from getting access to the help they need to escape their abuser(s). The courts have not clearly defined the federal constitutional boundaries of searches and seizures in this context. The Supreme Court, in particular, has not weighed in on the constitutionality of warrantless searches and seizures in connection with abuse and neglect investigations. This lack of Supreme Court guidance has led to unpredictable and sometimes conflicting opinions …

Puerto Rican Girls Speak! : The Meanings Of Success For Puerto Rican Girls Ages 14–18 In Hartford, Connecticut, Hilda Lloréns, Carlos G. Garcia-Quijano

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This article reports on findings from “Puerto Rican Girls Speak!,” an ethnographic research project carried out during the Spring of 2010 in Hartford, Connecticut, with 18 third-generation Puerto Rican girls ranging in age from 14 to 18 years old. Using mixed ethnographic methods, we examined the ways in which low-income, urban Puerto Rican girls defined success in their lives. For the girls who participated in this study, success is a multidimensional phenomena that includes happiness, wellbeing, life satisfaction, economic independence and stability, and fulfilling social relationships. We explored the role of family, reciprocity, and formal education networks in shaping the …

All Might Have Won, But Not All Have The Prize: Optimal Treatment For Substance Abuse Among Adolescents With Conduct Problems, Jayson Spas, Susan Ramsey, Andrea L. Paiva, L. A.R. Stein Jan 2012

All Might Have Won, But Not All Have The Prize: Optimal Treatment For Substance Abuse Among Adolescents With Conduct Problems, Jayson Spas, Susan Ramsey, Andrea L. Paiva, L. A.R. Stein

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

Considerable evidence from the literature on treatment outcomes indicates that substance abuse treatment among adolescents with conduct problems varies widely. Treatments commonly used among this population are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), 12-step facilitation, multisystemic therapy (MST), psychoeducation (PE), and motivational interviewing (MI). This manuscript thoroughly and systematically reviews the available literature to determine which treatment is optimal for substance-abusing adolescents with conduct problems. Results suggest that although there are several evidence-based and empirically supported treatments, those that incorporate family-based intervention consistently provide the most positive treatment outcomes. In particular, this review further reveals that although many interventions have gained empirical support …
