Families Of Murder Victims' Perceptions Of Capital Punishment : A Content Analysis Of What Family Members Say Following Executions., Corey Daniel Burton 1984- May 2012

Families Of Murder Victims' Perceptions Of Capital Punishment : A Content Analysis Of What Family Members Say Following Executions., Corey Daniel Burton 1984-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two common assumptions are that the family members of murder victims will achieve closure and perceive a sense of justice following the execution of their loved one's murderer. These assumptions, however, may be unfounded. Using family member statements from newspaper articles reporting on 138 executions in the United States from 2006-2011, the current study examines family member post-execution feelings and attitudes as reported in the media. Results indicate that family member closure and perceived justice following the execution, although the most preeminent themes that emerge, are still relatively uncommon. The results of the current study are discussed in the context …

Crimes Against Caring: Compassion Fatigue, Burnout And Self-Care Practices Among Professionals Working With Crimes Against Children, Patrick Quinn Brady May 2012

Crimes Against Caring: Compassion Fatigue, Burnout And Self-Care Practices Among Professionals Working With Crimes Against Children, Patrick Quinn Brady

Criminal Justice Graduate Projects and Theses

Working with cases involving crimes against children requires individuals to be directly and indirectly exposed to graphic material including images, videos, and statements made by child victims. Exposure to traumatic events can have a profound and lasting effect on everyone who is directly and indirectly involved. Because of this, helping professionals who have extended exposure to traumatized populations are more susceptible to psychological distress. Through an exhaustive review of the literature, this paper identifies the prevalence of compassion fatigue, burnout, compassion satisfaction among forensic interviewers and professionals working with cases involving crimes against children. The utilization of self-care methods from …

The Racial Rhetoric Of Cuteness As Decorative Decorum, Nicole Mcfarlane May 2012

The Racial Rhetoric Of Cuteness As Decorative Decorum, Nicole Mcfarlane

All Dissertations

This work looks at the trope of cuteness as a means of investigating the topological phenomena of race and public space, particularly in regards to African American rhetorical modes of visual and spatial practice. By introducing a sociological coinage known as the 'teddy-bear effect,' this work explores how racialized expressions of cuteness give off the impression of a demurring civility surrounding the social expectations associated with the cultural norms of gender and class. As a preferred characteristic of information design and strategically deployed for the tactic of racialized passings in the face of increasingly regulated forms of 'post-racial' gate-keeping and …

Law Enforcement In The Fog Of Mistrust: Solving The Problem Of Black Mistrust In Law Enforcement, Mark Wayne Whitson May 2012

Law Enforcement In The Fog Of Mistrust: Solving The Problem Of Black Mistrust In Law Enforcement, Mark Wayne Whitson

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

What is the relationship between educating police officers in African American history and culture and the development of empathy and accommodative communication during interactions? This question is important to study because history and culture define African-American mistrust in general and specific mistrust of law enforcement in the United States. “Studies consistently show minority group members are more distrustful and less confident in the police and courts” (Tyler, 2001, p. 217). African-American perceptions are shaped by historical experiences and as a result Blacks believe they are treated differently because of race. All police officers, regardless of their race or gender, because …

Overcoming Negative Perceptions Through An Effective Communication Plan, Amanda Blau May 2012

Overcoming Negative Perceptions Through An Effective Communication Plan, Amanda Blau

Senior Honors Projects

It is impossible not to communicate, but the importance of communication is easily overlooked. In her book, “Communication in Our Lives,” Julia T. Wood, a communication expert, says, “From birth to death, communication shapes our personal, professional, and social lives as well as the culture in which we live.” The ability to communicate effectively is necessary to implement the ideas and visions of an organization. This ongoing need is apparent in successful organizations but also applies to school districts, whose audiences extend outside the classroom and beyond the playground perimeter. In my role as a school committee member, …

California's 2011 Realignment Legislation Addressing Public Safety And How It Will Impact Local Governments, John Mineau May 2012

California's 2011 Realignment Legislation Addressing Public Safety And How It Will Impact Local Governments, John Mineau

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

California’s 2011 Realignment Legislation Addressing Public Safety is the most sweeping public safety reform package since shortly after California’s statehood in 1850. Traditionally, any person convicted and confined for a felony has been incarcerated and supervised by the state. Moving forward, realignment will put many convicted felons in local jails instead of state prisons. It will also place paroling offenders under local probation supervision rather than state parole. The change in parole supervision represents a monumental shift of responsibility from the state to local governments. Realignment will have major effects on local government operations and budgets. Realignment has been conceptualized …

The Evolution Of Unconstitutionality In Sex Offender Registration Laws, Catherine L. Carpenter, Amy E. Beverlin May 2012

The Evolution Of Unconstitutionality In Sex Offender Registration Laws, Catherine L. Carpenter, Amy E. Beverlin

UC Law Journal

More is not always better. Consider sex offender registration laws. Initially anchored by rational basis, registration schemes have spiraled out of control because legislators, eager to please a fearful public, have been given unfettered freedom by a deferential judiciary. This Article does not challenge the state’s legislative power to enact sex offender registration laws. Instead, this Article posits that, even if sex offender registration schemes initially were constitutional, serially amended sex offender registration schemes—what this Article dubs super-registration schemes—are not. Their emergence demands reexamination of the traditionally held assumptions that defined original registration laws as civil regulations. Two intertwined causes …

'People Want To See What Happened': Treme, Televisual Tourism, And The Racial Remapping Of Post-Katrina New Orleans, Lynnell L. Thomas May 2012

'People Want To See What Happened': Treme, Televisual Tourism, And The Racial Remapping Of Post-Katrina New Orleans, Lynnell L. Thomas

American Studies Faculty Publication Series

Occupying the space between cultural reproduction and theatrical production, the HBO series Treme offers an important vantage point from which to analyze the intersection of race, class, culture, and media representation animating New Orleans’s post-Katrina tourist identity. Treme illustrates the tension between the welcome recognition and celebration of New Orleans black expressive culture and its spectacularization and commodification. The resuscitation of tourist tropes and an emphasis on jazz and heritage music in the series often render the city’s history of racial conflict and injustice invisible or subordinate to new narratives of cross-racial unity among Katrina survivors and paternalistic actions by …

The Lawyer Meets The Therapist, The Minister, And The Psychiatrist: Law School Cross-Professional Collaborations, Timothy W. Floyd May 2012

The Lawyer Meets The Therapist, The Minister, And The Psychiatrist: Law School Cross-Professional Collaborations, Timothy W. Floyd

Mercer Law Review

Lawyers in practice rarely encounter purely legal problems. Understanding the social, economic, political, and historical context is often crucial to resolving legal issues, and legal decisions are often dependent upon business, scientific, medical, psychological, and technological information. Most legal representation occurs within some field of enterprise or industry, and nearly all representation of clients involves complex emotional and interpersonal dynamics.

Early in my legal career, I realized the importance of knowing other fields and specialties in order to be an effective lawyer. My first practice experience was in commercial litigation, and our firm represented clients from a wide range of …

The Rights-Based Approach To Development In Latin America, Catherine Divita May 2012

The Rights-Based Approach To Development In Latin America, Catherine Divita

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Many scholars and practitioners believe the rights-based approach represents a significant step forward in the development field towards the eradication of poverty. In lieu of blind service provision, aid organizations implementing the rights-based approach use human rights to address underlying causes of poverty such as exclusion, discrimination and corruption. However, integrating human rights into the development process is no clean, simple task. The rights-based approach has been conceptualized and implemented in many different ways around the world since its emergence in the 1990s. Scholars and practitioners now ask: Which rights-based approach is the most successful? I examine the rights-based approaches …

Three Essays On The Property Value Impact Of Neighborhood Disamenities, Alexander Nicholas Bogin

Economics - Dissertations

This dissertation employs hedonic analysis to examine market demand for three neighborhood disamenities. The first chapter investigates the property value impact of a No Child Left Behind "failing" school designation. The second chapter studies the property value impact of a local homicide. The third chapter examines the property value impact of proximity to a mosque post 9/11. Each disamenity has a negative and significant effect on property values with the magnitude of impact varying across household type.

Temporal Shifts In Weapon Focus: Comparing Retrograde And Anterograde Effects, William Blake Erickson May 2012

Temporal Shifts In Weapon Focus: Comparing Retrograde And Anterograde Effects, William Blake Erickson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When an eyewitness suffers an impairment of memory for a criminal's face because the criminal used a weapon during the commission of the crime, this impairment is called the weapon focus effect. Literature provides two explanations for how this effect arises: some implicate the narrowing of attentional cues to the weapon during the commission of a crime because arousal of the victim increases, while others claim that the weapon is merely a novel object in most everyday contexts, and novel objects demand more attention than contextually appropriate ones. The current study employed a simulated crime paradigm taking place in a …

Identity, Entitlement And Violence: A Cross Analysis Of Intimate Partner Domestic Violent With The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, Troy D. Montes

Capstone Collection

This capstone investigates the root causes associated with domestic violence and compares such causes with those associated with the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to determine if the violence associated with both phenomena shares anything in common. Research regarding domestic violence was conducted at Washington County Department of Community Corrections (Oregon). Qualitative research included gathering the total number of domestic violence cases supervised by the county and calculating what percentages involved male and female perpetrators. Qualitative research included observations of and conversations with individuals under supervision for DV offenses and review of public archives. Research of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict included extensive reading of …

An Examination Of The History And Effect Of American Sex Offense Laws And Offender Registration, David Shabat-Love May 2012

An Examination Of The History And Effect Of American Sex Offense Laws And Offender Registration, David Shabat-Love

HIM 1990-2015

America's Sex Offense statutes and cases are some of the most controversial sections of modern law, both for the extreme sensitivity of their subject matter as well as the scope and application of those laws. This thesis is an analysis and overview of both the objective and subjective issues posed by the current state of those very laws: the subjective portion explored the development of current laws and the diverse attendant legal issues such as over-broadness and excessive or misdirected effect as compared to the Legislative and public intent which directly led to the development of these laws. Additionally a …

Medicate To Execute Constitutional And Ethical Considerations, Adam Schultz May 2012

Medicate To Execute Constitutional And Ethical Considerations, Adam Schultz

HIM 1990-2015

The United States Supreme Court has not yet examined several aspects of the death penalty. One aspect is the ability for the state to forcefully medicate an incompetent inmate, which may result in the inmate appearing competent for execution. While the Supreme Court' ruled that it is unconstitutional to execute an inmate who is incompetent, inmates who would have had their executions vacated due to mental illness are executed because the state can put them on an involuntary medication regimen. According to many experts, involuntary medication regimens mask the affects of their illness instead of providing a cure. Experts often …

This thesis examines two issues facing Florida's young and fledgling Veteran Treatment Courts. First is whether or not a separate hybrid court of already existing mental health and drug courts is needed exclusively for veterans; and second, funding and efficiency of such courts as compared to traditional criminal institutions.

The Californians Against Sexual Exploitation (Case) Act: A Case Study In Policy Advocacy, Bailey Mannisto-Ichés May 2012

The Californians Against Sexual Exploitation (Case) Act: A Case Study In Policy Advocacy, Bailey Mannisto-Ichés

Capstone Collection

In any given year in the United States of America at least 100,000 domestic youth are sexually exploited through the commercial sex industry. Current national and state laws do not adequately protect these children from being groomed, pimped, and exploited over and over again in their young lives. A majority of these children are trafficked from, into or within the nation’s most populated state of California. In 2003 the FBI identified three of the country’s 13 high-‐intensity child sex trafficking cities as being in California. The cycle of violence these children endure is not being brought to justice through the …

I Still Have To Overcome Just Being Captured Inside Myself: The Experience And Meaning Of Peritraumatic Tonic Immobility Among Survivors Of Sexual Violence, Sunda Friedman Tebockhorst

Dissertations

While tonic immobility is a phenomenon well known and documented in the animal world, far less is known about its physiologic correlates and manifestation in human beings. This study examines the experience of tonic immobility from the perspective of seven women who have survived a sexual assault accompanied by tonic immobility. It yields a description of the experience of tonic immobility and how it is construed by survivors using phenomenological methodology. Results indicate that themes associated with the experience include a period of initial overwhelming confusion, feelings of terror, a desire to distance oneself from the experience, an intense desire …
