2012 Cumberland County Law Enforcement Case File Review, Teresa A. Hubley, George Shaler Mph
2012 Cumberland County Law Enforcement Case File Review, Teresa A. Hubley, George Shaler Mph
Maine Statistical Analysis Center
Since 1998, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) has required all states that receive formula grant funding through the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Act to determine the rate of minority youth in confinement. In 2002, OJJDP enhanced this requirement to include other key decision points (e.g., arrest, referral, diversion, detention, petition, adjudication, probation, confinement, and bind over) in the juvenile justice process. This expanded view allows for a more comprehensive assessment of how minority youth are treated by various juvenile justice system actors (e.g., law enforcement, corrections, and the courts). The Act’s goal is to ensure that all …

Perceptions Of Community-Based Advocates In Jefferson County, Colorado Concerning Intimate Partner Violence Against Women, Amanda A. Lathrop
Perceptions Of Community-Based Advocates In Jefferson County, Colorado Concerning Intimate Partner Violence Against Women, Amanda A. Lathrop
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This qualitative study explored perceptions of community-based advocates in Jefferson County, Colorado and their experience assisting victims of intimate partner violence against women. Open-ended interview questionnaires were collected from community-based advocates and used to derive the perceptions community-based advocates hold with regard to access to community resources, ability to establish social support, improve quality of life, and ultimately reduce re-abuse. Results of these perceptions were combined with and compared to previous secondary research by Deborah Bybee and Cris Sullivan. This research of victims' perceived effectiveness combined with data collected from advocates' perceived effectiveness allowed for further insight into intimate partner …
Racial Profiling Is Not Specifically Always Black Or White, Samantha Ollie
Racial Profiling Is Not Specifically Always Black Or White, Samantha Ollie
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The following paper outlines different views of racial profiling. Racial profiling is painted in various lights due to the ambiguity and the magnitude that surrounds this concern. Accusations seem to be on every news headline, but how do we as a public know who was in the right and who was in the wrong and how can he or she prove the true intention of any given situation? Both pros and cons from each side, of an average citizen of the United States of America and also from the law enforcement personnel that live to serve and protect those citizens …
An Examination Of Perceived Stress Levels And Coping Styles Among Rural Law Enforcement Officers, Marcos Luis Misis
An Examination Of Perceived Stress Levels And Coping Styles Among Rural Law Enforcement Officers, Marcos Luis Misis
Dissertations
Policing is a very stressful job. Despite the extensive body of research on police stress, the majority of studies have focused solely on officers within urban police departments. Research on stress within rural law enforcement departments is virtually non-existent even though the majority of police agencies in America serve towns and areas under 50,000 residents.
This study had four main goals: (1) to examine how work-related stress affects the levels of perceived stress, anxiety, and depression for rural law enforcement officers; (2) to explore the specific stressors affecting rural law enforcement officers; (3) to investigate how rural law enforcement officers …
Identifying Patterns Of Delinquent Trajectories And Testing Stability Of Self-Control Over Time Among South Korean Youth Using Multivariate Latent Growth Curve Modeling, Wanhee Lee
Dissertations
The South Korean yearly national report revealed that since 2006 there has been a steady increase in juvenile crimes (Seoul Police Department, 2009). In addition, the report demonstrated that South Korean juveniles' age of onset in delinquent activity has been continuously decreasing. In South Korea, the age-crime curve sharply peaks at age 16, holds constant until 19, and then begins to decline. Thus, this "peak" within the age-crime curve has been a frequently research topic. This has resulted in some empirical support demonstrating that the age in which criminal involvement peaks is considered the most dynamic period in an individuals' …
An Examination Of Factors Affecting Information Sharing Among Law Enforcement Agencies, Scott Driskill Bransford
An Examination Of Factors Affecting Information Sharing Among Law Enforcement Agencies, Scott Driskill Bransford
Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to investigate using survey data to find factors or barriers which contributed to local law enforcement participation and support of intelligence information sharing. Following the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York City and Arlington, Virginia, new homeland security initiatives and directives were created from the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. Several new initiatives and directives provided new communication opportunities for partnerships between all levels of law enforcement to combat the future threat of domestic terrorism.
The evaluation literature indicated that a majority of post-9/11, initiatives, including the creation of …
How Parents Influence Deviant Behavior Among Adolescents: An Analysis Of Their Family Life, Community, And Peers, Amber Carlson
How Parents Influence Deviant Behavior Among Adolescents: An Analysis Of Their Family Life, Community, And Peers, Amber Carlson
Perspectives
The goal of this literature review is to analyze the effect the family has on an adolescent’s behavior. It is believed that parents have direct and indirect control. Previous research has found that parents directly influence their childrens behavior through the parenting techniques utilized. Parental support is the largest influence on creating preferable behavior in adolescents. Along with the direct influence from parents, the parents have indirect control over the community through which the adolescents lives in and socializes with peers in. Adolescents require strong bonds in their community. Through these bonds, adolescents are watched over and other families reciprocate …
Labeling Theory And The Effects Of Sanctioning On Delinquent Peer Association: A New Approach To Sentencing Juveniles, Nathaniel Ascani
Labeling Theory And The Effects Of Sanctioning On Delinquent Peer Association: A New Approach To Sentencing Juveniles, Nathaniel Ascani
Perspectives
This is a review of contemporary theory and studies published in various scholarly journals regarding the labeling effect of criminal justice system involvement at a young age on offenders. Drawing on studies that have taken place over the past several decades in order to increase the generalizability of the conclusions, this paper discusses the relationship between formal sanctioning and delinquent peer association among offenders. Results from the studies lend support to the tenets of labeling theory. They also suggest that the relative rate of increased recidivism among offenders is positively correlated with an operationalized measure of their “stakes in conformity” …
Community-Oriented Policing Strategies When Handling Nonviolent Drug Offenders, Michael J. Layle
Community-Oriented Policing Strategies When Handling Nonviolent Drug Offenders, Michael J. Layle
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this study, I analyze the responses of police officers to questions regarding their involvement in the use of Community-Oriented Policing strategies. When the officer encounters a drug offender they must decide how to deal with the situation. There are a variety of trained responses and policies available. The data is grouped into nine variables; time in law enforcement, time in department, perceived support, perceived barriers, COP strategy, COP action, prevention, help, and citation. The data is then analyzed using structural equation modeling.
The Protective Factors And Life Outcomes Of Youth Exposed To Community Violence, Patricia Bamwine
The Protective Factors And Life Outcomes Of Youth Exposed To Community Violence, Patricia Bamwine
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There is an increasing interest in the life outcomes of youth that are exposed to community violence. Previous research has found that community violence has a direct effect on youth development. It has also shown that there are economic costs for communities that have high levels of community violence. Thus far, the literature on youth in these areas has focused on protective factors such as school connectedness, family connectedness, religion and positive life outcomes. There is little research on the affects of mentoring on life outcomes for individuals that were exposed to community violence during adolescence. This study explores mentoring …
Preserving The Right To A Fair Trial An Examination Of The Prejudicial Value Of Visual And Auditory Evidence In The Context Of A Criminal Case, Emily Edwards
HIM 1990-2015
Federal Rule of Evidence 403 requires evidence's probative value to substantially outweigh its prejudicial value for the evidence to be admitted. To date, courts have opinioned that photographic evidence holds low prejudicial impact and rarely render court proceedings unfair (Futch v. Dugger, 1989). The present study sought to empirically investigate this issue. In a 2 (Auditory Present/Auditory Absent) x 3 (Graphic Photo/Neutral Photo/No Photo) factorial design, 300 participants reviewed case materials from a recent murder case and provided information concerning their verdict decision. Emotional state data was also collected prior to and following review of the case materials via the …

Nationalism, Archaeology, And The Antiquities Trade In Turkey And Iraq, Miranda Pettengill
Nationalism, Archaeology, And The Antiquities Trade In Turkey And Iraq, Miranda Pettengill
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
The illicit antiquities trade is a vast and complex network comprising a large number of participants across the globe. This paper focuses specifically on looters and illegal excavators, those who first retrieve ancient objects from the ground to be traded on the black market. My research examines the reasoning and motivation behind looting; specifically, I evaluate how nationalistic ideologies in Turkey and Iraq affect the choices and actions of illegal excavators living there. I also discuss the benefits of community archaeology, an approach that includes local people in the practice and presentation of excavation, as a strategy to minimize the …

Sextrafficking Of Minors: How Many Juvenilesare Being Prostituted In The Us?, Michelle L. Stransky, David Finkelhor
Crimes Against Children Research Center
There have been many attempts to estimate the number of juveniles who are being prostituted (or trafficked) within the United States. These estimates range from 1,400 to 2.4 mil‐ lion, although most fall between 300,000 and 600,000. BUT PLEASE DO NOT CITE THESE NUMBERS. READ ON. A close look at these diverse estimates reveals that none are based on a strong scientific foundation. They are mostly educated guesses or extrapolations based on questionable assumptions. They do not have the substance of typically re‐ ported crime statistics, like the number of robberies or the number of child sexual abuse victims. The …
The Influence Of European Union Policy On Capital Punishment In The United States Judicial System, Jennifer Thomas
The Influence Of European Union Policy On Capital Punishment In The United States Judicial System, Jennifer Thomas
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Capital punishment has been present for the entirety of American history. Despite this, there have been active supporters for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States since the early 1960’s. Considering the growing importance of the individual state’s participation on the global stage, including the effects of globalization, international law, and human rights standards, the European Union’s capital punishment policy may have an increasing influence over Supreme Court’s interpretations of the constitutionality of capital punishment. This research intends to evaluate the factors that indicate a nation’s likelihood to abolish the death penalty. It will then explore the …
Peace Through Justice?: Evaluating The International Criminal Court, Katherine Ann Snitzer
Peace Through Justice?: Evaluating The International Criminal Court, Katherine Ann Snitzer
International Studies Honors Projects
This thesis looks at the recently created International Criminal Court (ICC) and its early cases in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sudan. The central questions are: how does the Court impact peace building in the war-torn countries whose cases it handles? And is there a tension between peace and justice in these cases? The case studies demonstrate that while rhetoric linking peace and justice dominates the Court, the ICC is ill equipped to address the complex interaction of the two in specific countries. The Court’s narrow mandate and powers mean that practical and political concerns dominate its decision-making …

Executive Summary The Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) Division of Juvenile Services (DJS) collaborates with the Muskie School of Public Service in a state‐university partnership to analyze juvenile recidivism rates. DJS measures juvenile justice outcomes to guide policy and program development geared toward recidivism reduction. Reduction of youth recidivism in Maine increases public safety.
This report uses multiple recidivism measures: re‐arrest, re‐adjudication/conviction, and recommitment. To be consistent with other reports, most analysis focuses on re‐adjudication/conviction. This report measures DJS impact on youth who have been committed to a MDOC facility by examining rates of recidivism.
On average, 107 are committed …

The New American Landscape: Beyond Bollards And Barricades, William Towle
Landscape Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
The object of this thesis is to develop landscape architecture design guidelines that aid in the protection of people in public spaces while reducing security concerns on commercial properties. The integration of existing guidelines that come from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES), and the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) will create a new standard of guidelines to be used for security credits within SITES. These guidelines will be developed through an analytical method. These new guidelines will be added to SITES for security and then tested against a local site, in Rogers, …

Prison Wardens' Perceptions Of Sex Offenders, Sex Offender Registration, Community Notification, And Residency Restrictions., David Patrick Connor
Prison Wardens' Perceptions Of Sex Offenders, Sex Offender Registration, Community Notification, And Residency Restrictions., David Patrick Connor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is relatively little known about how criminal justice system actors perceive sex offenders and the fairness, efficacy, and scope of policies aimed at sex offenders. Similarly, there is sparse research that specifically examines the attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of prison wardens. Following in the footsteps of earlier research (Tewksbury & Mustaine, 2011; Tewksbury, Mustaine, & Payne, 2011, in press), the present study addresses these gaps by considering the attitudes and beliefs toward sex offenders held by wardens. This examination includes perceptions about sex offenders as prison inmates, sex offender registration, community notification, and residency restrictions. Further, this research assesses …

Backgrounds And Motivations Of Faith-Based Halfway-House Volunteers., Andrew Stephen Denney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the backgrounds and motivations of individuals who volunteer for a Protestant Christian faith-based halfway-house for recently released offenders. Drawing on eight in-depth interviews with volunteers from a faith-based ministry located in a Southern city, the study examines how and why volunteers come to their positions and what they perceive as rewards of their work. Typically, volunteers report receiving more benefits themselves than they perceive offender clients receiving. Chief among perceived rewards are a transparent community in which volunteers could safely share personal aspects of themselves than what they could experience elsewhere. This study provides valuable information to …

Bayesian Regression Analysis., Sara Evans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Regression analysis is a statistical method used to relate a variable of interest, typically y (the dependent variable), to a set of independent variables, usually, X1, X2,...,Xn . The goal is to build a model that assists statisticians in describing, controlling, and predicting the dependent variable based on the independent variable(s). There are many types of regression analysis: Simple and Multiple Linear Regression, Nonlinear Regression, and Bayesian Regression Analysis to name a few. Here we will explore simple and multiple linear regression and Bayesian linear regression. For years, the most widely used method of regression analysis has been the Frequentist …

Reducing The Incarceration Of The Homeless : An Examination Of Multi-Service Use And The Utilization Of Institutional Services., Christopher Hughes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the link between various aspects of service utilization and the institutionalization of homeless individuals. The researcher wished to determine whether participation in various therapeutic, medical, and housing programs have an influence on recidivism, number of admissions to jail, and the number of admissions for psychiatric hospitalization. The current study examined administrative data from agencies which routinely provide services to homeless individuals and included a sample of 7,180 homeless individuals in Louisville, KY during 2004 and 2005. The current study posited four hypotheses related to the utilization of community-based services to reduce the …
Preventative Behavioral Parent Training: Demonstration Of The Immediacy Effects Of An Innovative Conduct Problem Prevention Program In Young At-Risk Children, Alexis Bolton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Researchers propose to administer preventative behavioral parent training (PBPT) to young children who are displaying developmentally typical conduct problems (i.e., noncompliance and tantrums), with the intent of contributing valuable knowledge for preventing the development of chronic conduct problems in children.
Preventative behavioral parent training is an innovative model designed for conduct problems prevention. The scope of this study will be limited to demonstrating the immediate effects of PBPT. Given the nature and origins of PBPT, immediacy effects are expected and should be relevant to the maintenance of effects over time.
It is predicted that participation in PBPT would yield positive …
