Methods: Data were extracted from the Israeli component of the 28-country World Mental Health Survey. The sample included 165 respondents who reported ever having cancer and 2,282 cancer-free respondents, all aged 39 years and older. In Search Of The Healthy Church: A Meta-Ethnographic Study, Russell L. Huizing Jul 2012

In Search Of The Healthy Church: A Meta-Ethnographic Study, Russell L. Huizing

Great Commission Research Journal

After a brief literature review, eight of the primary contemporary church health resources are subjected to a meta-ethnographic study. The resources’ combined twenty-six health indicators are translated through the meta-themes of organizational structure, developing community, church characteristics, and personal characteristics. A discussion and visual synthesis of the translations point to the church literature developing community through organizational structure which in turn cultivates church and personal characteristics. Future research recommendations include expanding the study of church metaphors beyond “body” and identifying metaphor-specific characteristics through exegetical study

Estimation And Prediction In The Random Effects Model With Ar(P) Remainder Disturbances, Badi Baltagi, Long Liu Jul 2012

Estimation And Prediction In The Random Effects Model With Ar(P) Remainder Disturbances, Badi Baltagi, Long Liu

Center for Policy Research

This paper considers the problem of estimation and forecasting in a panel data model with random individual effects and AR(p) remainder disturbances. It utilizes a simple exact transformation for the AR(p) time series process derived by Baltagi and Li (1994) and obtains the generalized least squares estimator for this panel model as a least squares regression. This exact transformation is also used in conjunction with Goldberger’s (1962) result to derive an analytic expression for the best linear unbiased predictor. The performance of this predictor is investigated using Monte Carlo experiments and illustrated using an empirical example.

Ethics And Social Responsibility: Integration Within Industrial Design Education In Oceania, Mariano Ramirez Jul 2012

Ethics And Social Responsibility: Integration Within Industrial Design Education In Oceania, Mariano Ramirez

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Industrial design schools have typically functioned as training grounds in which future designers are skilled into becoming proficient creators of more ‘stuff’, many of which prove to be unnecessary and unsustainable. Several research publications examine the integration of sustainability in industrial design education, but most of these focus on ecological aspects, especially because environmental improvement has been the focus of government policymaking and product innovation in the last two decades or so. The social pillar of sustainability has received less attention; in fact there is no accepted definition in the design industry about what constitutes this area. This research investigates …

Promoting Research To The Masses: Assessing The Impact Of A Poster Walk, Denise R. Adkins, Julie S. Lyon

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Poster sessions are often used to educate communities. In this paper, we describe a project in which students summarized research findings on child development issues in poster form and showcased their work to the campus community. Through a variety of assessments, we show that poster walk participants not only enjoyed the event but also became more knowledgeable about child development issues.

The Academic Autistic Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE), a partnership between academic researchers and members of the Autistic community, has conducted a series of studies to understand the healthcare experiences of autistic adults. We are using what we learned from these studies, as well as the lived experiences of our team members, to create information and tools to improve healthcare for autistic adults. After sharing what we learned from our studies, we will offer tips, ideas, information, and tools that may enable more effective self-advocacy in healthcare settings and reduce barriers to healthcare, including care for acute and …

Personal Reflection: Transforming Teaching Practice Through Action Research: The Role Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Kalpana Goel Jul 2012

Personal Reflection: Transforming Teaching Practice Through Action Research: The Role Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Kalpana Goel

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This reflective piece describes my experiences of teaching practice in an Indian University and my transformed practice as a result of enrolment in the Graduate Certificate in Education (University Teaching) in an Australian university. I enrolled in this course with hesitation, considering it time consuming and likely to detract from any focus on research. However, the experiences and learning in different modules of the graduate certificate became instrumental in producing an action researcher from a standard academic. In this essay, I will share my engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning through an action research project which has transformed …

Publications and Research

Racial microaggressions are subtle forms of verbal and behavioral discrimination toward people of color. The current qualitative study explores the experiences of Filipino American participants (N = 12), who described 13 categories of microaggressions, including being treated as an alien in one’s own land or as a 2nd-class citizen, being presumed to have inferior status or intellect, being assumed to uphold Filipino stereotypes, or being mistaken for another identity. Recommendations for counseling and development are discussed.

Reclaiming "Victim" Through Untold Stories: An Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Women Who Have Survived Violence, Ashley K. Collette Jul 2012

Reclaiming "Victim" Through Untold Stories: An Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Women Who Have Survived Violence, Ashley K. Collette

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Around the world one in every three women has been the victim of gender-based violence (Amnesty International USA, 2012). Be it sexual, physical, or psychological, violence against women is an epidemic that needs to end. Past research in the field of Communication has mainly focused on news media coverage of violent crimes. The accounts portrayed in news media were largely edited and focused on a hegemonic version of the experiences (Benedict, 1992; Meyers, 1997; Carll, 2003; Dowler, 2006). These news accounts generally ignore the lived experiences of the female victims, which leaves them feeling isolated in their victimization. Victims’ stories …

The End Of The Honeymoon: Cbpr, Positional Privilege And Working With Community Coalitions, Ann Curry-Stevens

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter tells a story about the CBPR research project, "Making Communities of Color Count" which partners researchers at the School of Social Work with the Coalition of Communities of Color in Multnomah County. It is not the only story about this project, as the voices of community partners and the rest of the research team are quiet in this retelling, but it is the one that centers the experience of the lead academic in this partnership. I center the joys and challenges of CBPR research, and the avenues that such opportunities offer for academically-based researchers, replete with avenues for …

Psychological Science Articles

Intensive mothering (IM) attitudes have been considered the dominant discourse of motherhood, but have only been assessed qualitatively The goal of this study was to develop a quantitative scale to assess these ideologies, their construct validity, and their relationship to relevant constructs (i.e., work status and division of household labor). An on-line questionnaire was given to 595 mothers asking 56 questions assessing different aspects of IM attitudes as well as several validation measures. An Exploratory Factor Analysis on 315 randomly selected mothers yielded a 5 factor solution. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis on the remaining 280 mothers demonstrated good fit. The …

Who Teaches Information Literacy Competencies? Report Of A Study Of Faculty, Sharon A. Weiner Jun 2012

Who Teaches Information Literacy Competencies? Report Of A Study Of Faculty, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Information literacy is recognized as an essential competency for educational success. It relates to all disciplines but is not a separate discipline, so it is not clear who takes responsibility for teaching this competency to undergraduates. This is a report of a survey conducted to better understand the extent to which teaching information literacy concepts by faculty occurred in a research university. The results indicated that faculty in the disciplines generally teach information literacy competencies to undergraduate students without collaborating with others on their campus. Many faculty also had the expectation that students know how to avoid plagiarism, find articles …
