Political Mavens: Ruth Underhill, Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, Gene Weltfish, Ella Deloria, And The Politics Of Culture, Alessandra Link
History ETDs
The locus of this masters thesis, 'Political Mavens: Ruth Underhill, Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, Gene Weltfish, Ella Deloria, and the Politics of Culture,' centers on how female anthropologists shaped political discourses in the twentieth century. The anthropologist has long been considered the handmaiden of imperialism, made most apparent in Vine Deloria's Custer Died for Your Sins (1969). Although partially true, my work seeks to complicate this association by examining how the publications and careers of four female anthropologists demonstrate both their ties to colonialism, and, in the case of Gene Weltfish and Ella Deloria, their scholarly attempts to critique the colonialist state …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-07-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-07-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

To Make A Better World Tomorrow: St. Clair Drake And The Quakers Of Pendle Hill, Andrew Rosa
History Faculty Publications
This article is part of a larger project by the author to record St. Clair Drake’s contribution to the black radical tradition. Here he examines Drake’s involvement with the Quakers in the early years of the Depression. Drawing on writings in African American and Popular Front periodicals of the time, it considers how a Quaker community shaped Drake’s identity as an intellectual activist and how his encounter suggests the ways in which black intellectuals engaged with non-violence as a philosophy and strategy for social change before he civil rights movement. Drake’s participation in non-violent campaigns for workers’ rights, world peace …

Juridical Framings Of Immigrants In The United States And France: Courts, Social Movements, And Symbolic Politics, Leila Kawar
Juridical Framings Of Immigrants In The United States And France: Courts, Social Movements, And Symbolic Politics, Leila Kawar
Political Science Faculty Publications
This paper reexamines the engagement of U.S. and French courts with immigration politics, aiming to provide a fuller accounting of how law and immigration politics shape one another. Jurisprudential principles are placed in national and historical context, elucidating the role of rights-oriented legal networks in formulating these arguments during the 1970s and early 1980s. The analysis traces how these judicial constructions of immigrants subsequently contributed to catalyzing a transformation of immigration politics in both countries. Immigrant rights jurisprudence is shown to be produced by, as well as productive of, broader political values, agendas, and identities.

Compassion Fatigue And Emotional Intelligence In Physicians, Jennifer Peterson
2010-2016 Archived Posters
Literature reveals that healthcare professionals, like physicians, experience compassion fatigue (CF) as a result of exposure to patient trauma. Research also demonstrates that leaders, like physicians, with higher emotional intelligence (EI) are more effective. This study proposes to identify if there is a correlation between CF and EI in physicians.

An Assessment Of Human Development In Uganda: The Capabilities Approach, Millennium Development Goals, And Human Development Index, Jordan Farrar
An Assessment Of Human Development In Uganda: The Capabilities Approach, Millennium Development Goals, And Human Development Index, Jordan Farrar
Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies
The Millennium Development Goals, grounded in Martha Nussbaum and Amaryta Sen’s Capabilities Approach and manifested through the Human Development Index, represent the contemporary means aimed at improving the overall quality of life for the people of the world. Currently Uganda is making substantial progress to achieve poverty reduction, increase overall health and ensure universal primary education. This paper’s argument is twofold. First, it argues that the best way to understand and further human development is through the Capabilities Approach. Second, this paper contends that many of Uganda’s policies aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goals are rooted within a capabilities …

This quantitative study investigated relationships between higher level mathematics learning and multiplication fact fluency, multiplication fact speed-recall, and reading grade equivalency of eighth grade students in Algebra I and Pre-Algebra. Higher level mathematics learning was indicated by an average score of 80% or higher on first and second semester mathematics assessments and proficient or advanced descriptor on the mathematics Missouri Assessment Program tests. Timed multiplication fact quizzes were administered to eighth grade students. Speed-recall scores were measured by the number of accurate answers in a 45-second time frame. Fluency was obtained by a student score of 35 accurate answers in …

Como White Paper - No Melting Pot: Results And Reflections From The 2011 Southeastern Federal Depository Coordinators Salary Survey Project, Yadira V. Payne, Lumarie Guth, Chris Sharpe
Georgia Library Quarterly
The authors launched the first Southeastern Federal Depository Coordinators Salary Survey in March 2011. The intent of the survey was less about salary comparison than it was about job responsibilities, qualifications, and education. From the results, the authors were able to extrapolate interesting and unexpected trends within their niche of librarianship. The diversity revealed through the project responses further reinforced the original idea that Government Information Librarians do not fall into a melting pot category.
