Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-07-15, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Utah State University proposes to establish a center that builds on its existing institutional strength in the social science of human-environment interactions and the multitude of ways in which social and economic development conditions are linked to environmental amenities and natural resource assets. The Center for Society, Economics and the Environment (CSEE) will achieve four objectives. It will: (1) serve as a key research resource to community, state, regional, and national agencies and organizations; (2) act as an information source for social science projects aimed at environmental, natural resource, and development issues; (3) foster inter-disciplinary research relationships among USU faculty; …
Technology-Mediated Caring In Online Teaching And Learning, Andrea Velasquez
Technology-Mediated Caring In Online Teaching And Learning, Andrea Velasquez
Theses and Dissertations
As online K-12 education becomes more prevalent, there arises a need to examine caring as it is experienced in technology-mediated contexts. The first article in this dissertation examines the definition of the term "caring pedagogies" and synthesizes relevant research helpful to understanding its application in a variety of contexts, including the technology-mediated context. The literature review is organized in the following categories: understanding caring pedagogy (defining and measuring), developing caring characteristics in individuals, developing caring communities, and developing caring in unique contexts. This article concludes that more research related to care is necessary in contexts other than the early childhood …

The Makings Of An Evidence-Based Local Health Department: Identifying Administrative And Management Practices, Peg Allen, Ross C. Brownson, Kathleen Duggan, Katherine A. Stamatakis, Paul C. Erwin
Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research
There is a gap in knowledge about how to best organize and administer practice in local health departments to implement sustained evidence-based policies, programs, and interventions. This report identifies administrative and management evidence-based practices to inform ongoing initiatives in local public health system quality improvement, accreditation processes, and performance. The article presents administrative elements in workforce development, leadership, organizational climate and culture, relationships and partnerships, and financial processes that local health departments can address at modest cost within a few years or less. Local public health systems can further identify, implement and evaluate evidence-based administrative practices.
Nature Is Prior To Us: Applying Catholic Social Thought And Anabaptist-Mennonite Theology To The Ethics Of Stakeholder Prioritization For The Natural Environment, Cathy A. Driscoll, Elden Wiebe, Bruno Dyck
Nature Is Prior To Us: Applying Catholic Social Thought And Anabaptist-Mennonite Theology To The Ethics Of Stakeholder Prioritization For The Natural Environment, Cathy A. Driscoll, Elden Wiebe, Bruno Dyck
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
We develop a spiritual and ethical based understanding of stakeholder theory that treats the natural environment as a primary stakeholder. We consider how Catholic social thought and Anabaptist-Mennonite theology can be seen as important resources for stakeholder thought and management, especially as they pertain to the natural environment as a primary stakeholder. We provide a discussion and implications for academics and practitioners in terms of dignifying both ecology and humanity, and creating solidarity between them. We also discuss how managers can become more attuned to the environment as a primary stakeholder through the development of relationships with the land and …

Paradigm Adherence And Personality Correlates Across Mental Health Professions, Laura Anne Rauscher
Dissertations
Paradigm adherence has been developed as a meta-theoretical approach to organize and to classify the multitude of different theories of counseling and psychotherapy. Four paradigms have been identified in the literature: The Organic-Medical, The Psychological, The Systemic-Relational, and the Social Constructivist paradigms. Only one other study to date has examined paradigm adherence of a group (Marriage and Family Therapists) and how it can be of value to the mental health professionals. This study examined the relationship between paradigm adherence and different characteristics of mental health professionals in the state of Missouri. In this study, Licensed Psychologists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, …

The Relationship Between Select Demographic Characteristics And Body Mass Index Among Native Hawaiian And Other Pacific Islander Caregiving Adults, Katrina Duncan
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders (NHOPIs) have the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity in the world. This study identified the proportion of our NHOPI sample in each body mass index (BMI) category and explored relationships between demographic characteristics and BMI. Design: This descriptive correlational study included 364 NHOPI caregiver adults in Utah (n=155) and Hawaii (n=209). We gathered demographic information with a questionnaire. Height and weight were measured for BMI calculations. Results: According to the CDC's BMI categories, 84.3% of our sample was overweight (BMI=25.0-29.9) or obese (BMI ≥30). Participants in Utah had significantly higher BMIs than …

Referral By Clergy Who Counsel Older Adults, Joseph Pickard, Megumi Inoue
Social Work Faculty Works
The purpose of this cross sectional study of clergy (N = 493) was to examine the likelihood of referral to formal mental health providers by those clergy who counsel older adults. Responding clergy completed a brief questionnaire that included information on the amount of counselling they do with older adults, the Attitudes towards Older Adults and Mental Illness (AOAMI) scale, their relationships with mental health professionals, their knowledge of resources for referring people for additional help, and basic demographic data, such as race, age, years in the clergy, and education level. In logistic regression analysis, respondents with more education, those …

Stable, Practical, And High-Paying: How Second Generation Indian/Pakistani Adults Are Affected By Parental Pressure In Their Career Choices, Sabrina Eveland
Capstone Collection
This study explores the pressure to succeed that some Indian and Pakistani first generation parents put on their second generation children living in the United States. The study was conducted through guided interviews with fourteen interviewees; six first generation parents who immigrated to the United States between 1966 and 1978 and eight second generation adult children between the ages of 20 and 35. The study captures the intergenerational stress that occurs when parents want their adult children to study traditional and stable careers that the second generation adults are not necessarily interested in. It also explores the pressures and limitations …
Parental Asset Accumulation Trajectories And Children's College Outcomes, Vernon Loke
Parental Asset Accumulation Trajectories And Children's College Outcomes, Vernon Loke
Center for Social Development Research
The effects of parental assets on children’s educational outcomes have mainly been explored from the perspective of asset holdings. However, the process of asset accumulation may also have effects. While asset-based policies are predicated on the premise of asset accumulation, little is known about the effects of different asset accumulation trajectories. This study attempts to fill this gap. The results indicate that youths born into households that had asset holdings significantly higher than zero have better college outcomes compared to youths born into households with lower levels of net worth that did not increase significantly over time. However, when lower-wealth …

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
BACKGROUND
Truancy is a significant problem in the U.S. and in other countries around the world. Truancy has been linked to serious immediate and far-reaching consequences for youth, families, and schools and communities, leading researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to try to understand and to address the problem. Although numerous and significant steps have been taken at the local, state, and national levels to reduce truancy, the rates of truancy have at best remained stable or at worst been on the rise, depending on the indicator utilized to assess truancy rates.
The costs and impact of chronic truancy are significant, …
