Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
In the United States, exotic dancers are denied their right to work in a safe and secure work environment. Strippers are faced with a variety of abuses on a daily basis and struggle to deal with the negative perceptions and social stigma in their communities. Perceptions of this legalized form of sexual entertainment are connected to the perceptions of prostitutes but differ because of the inability of the strippers to have physical contact with the audience. Dancers are stereotyped to perform the same services as a prostitute and do not have a dignified job. Women enter this area of the …

Living Homeless: The Interactions Between Homeless Individuals And The Communities In Which They Reside, Rachel Okerstrom, Lena Walsh
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This study sought to assess the public’s knowledge and views of homelessness in Valparaiso to see if there was a correlation between how the homeless individuals feel they are treated and how the community views and treats them. It was hypothesized that there would be a negatively correlated relationship between how the individuals feel they are treated by the community and how the community views them. Previous studies have uncovered a negative relationship between community members and homeless individuals because of homeless individuals using the all-night bus system due to a dissatisfaction with homeless shelter service; the community views these …

How Chilly Is Valpo? A Campus Climate Survey, Nicole Hudson, Erica Wickstrom
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Institutions of higher education in the U.S. have a history of racial and sexual discrimination. The consequences for unfriendly campus climates are serious; Gurin found that students of color who experience “cool” climates are more likely to demonstrate depressed graduation rates and decreased satisfaction with university experiences (Gurin et. al. 2004). The aim of this study was to holistically assess Valparaiso University’s campus climate based on the University of Toledo’s campus climate survey. These researchers focused on comparing the results of students who self-identified as minorities – specifically Black, Latino, Asian, international, and LGBTQ students – with the results of …
A Simple Understanding Of Attention Deficit Disorders And Resources For The Afflicted And Their Support Group, Amber Hauser
A Simple Understanding Of Attention Deficit Disorders And Resources For The Afflicted And Their Support Group, Amber Hauser
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
First, my purpose in writing this paper is to enlighten myself and others about an affliction that, as of 2011, in the United States alone affects 5.3 million children, ages 3-12, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a segment of attention deficit disorders, is a real affliction that cannot be cured. I am hoping to provide a simple but thorough explanation of what happens in an afflicted person, and what makes them different from a non-afflicted person. I also want to educate others concerning the causes and treatments of this affliction.
Relationship Between Aggressive Driving And Various Types Of Music, Karen Davidson, Ora Whitehead
Relationship Between Aggressive Driving And Various Types Of Music, Karen Davidson, Ora Whitehead
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This research study focused on the relationship between aggressive driving and various types of music to see what factors – i.e. age, consumption of alcohol, and genre of music – affect the individual while driving. Recent studies have suggested that different genres of music can affect one’s driving. Among articles that have been read, studies agree that age, consumption of alcohol, and genre of music affect an individual’s driving. Recent studies have indicated that different genres of music can affect one’s driving aggressiveness along with other, more established factors such as alcohol consumption and age. Our hypothesis #1 (control): There …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Introduction
The exponential growth of scientific literature, interdisciplinary nature of research, and trend towards specialization have posed many problems both to the scientists and librarians. The extensive investigations and the abundance of literature being published and contributed to immense escalation of cost for the libraries, as the acquisition of published literature became an increasingly difficult task. To maintain a reasonable collection of periodicals, at least in broad fields, it is necessary for the librarians to know the characteristics of subject literature used by the users. Information is not only increasing exponentiality but the growth rates also differ from one discipline …

Testing For Instability In Covariance Sturctures, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga
Testing For Instability In Covariance Sturctures, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga
Center for Policy Research
We propose a test for the stability over time of the covariance matrix of multivariate time series. The analysis is extended to the eigensystem to ascertain changes due to instability in the eigenvalues and/or eigenvectors. Using strong Invariance Principle and Law of Large Numbers, we normalize the CUSUM-type statistics to calculate their supremum over the whole sample. The power properties of the test versus local alternatives and alternatives close to the beginning/end of sample are investigated theoretically and via simulation. The testing procedure is validated through an application to 18 US interest rates over 1997-2011, finding instability at the end-2007/beginning-2008.

Subjective outcome evaluation findings based on the perspective of the participants participating in a 3-day training program of the Project P.A.T.H.S. are reported in this paper. The findings were based on the data collected from the training workshops conducted between 2005 and 2009 (N = 4.167). Results showed that the respondents had good and positive perceptions of the training program and found it very valuable, particularly with respect to training instructors and familiarization with the project. Besides, the training participants were able to acquire attitude, knowledge and skills that are conducive to the successful implementation of the program. Based on …

Based on a sample of 24,457 participated students, the present study investigated participants' subjective evaluation of the Tier 2 Program of the Project P.A.T.H.S. in the 2009/2010 academic year. Participants generally held positive views toward the Tier 2 Program and program instructor and perceived the program to be beneficial to their development. Programs involving adolescents alone were evaluated more positively than programs involving parents and/or teachers. Students' grade and program type did not show significant impact on participants' subjective evaluation of the project. Consistent with previous reports, perceived effectiveness of the program was significantly predicted by students' perceptions about the …

Helping Adolescents With Greater Psychosocial Needs: Subjective Outcome Evaluation Based On Different Cohorts, Daniel T. L. Shek, Tak Yan Lee
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
The Tier 2 Program of the Project P.A.T.H.S. (Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programmes) is designed to help students with greater psychosocial needs. This paper examines nine sets of subjective outcome evaluation data collected from 2005 to 2009 (n = 60, 241 participants). Based on the consolidated data with schools as units, results showed that participants generally had positive perceptions of the program, implementers, and benefits of the program. The subjective outcome evaluation instrument was found to be internally consistent. Multiple regression analysis revealed that perceived qualities of the program and the program implementers predicted perceived effectiveness of the …

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
A proposal for a creative non-fiction book using original family letters and other documents brought to light for the first time. The narrative traces the lives and losses of the author's relatives, John Herbert Claiborne, M.D., and Sarah Joseph Alston Claiborne, from 1852 to 1868 in Petersburg, Virginia. This work tells the story of their courtship, marriage, separation during the Civil War, and life during early Reconstruction. The point-of-view is that of "Joe's" perspective (as everyone called Sarah).

Intergenerational Support Systems: An Exploration Of Multigenerational Support Exchange, Ariela N. Litman
Scripps Senior Theses
Post-recession, middle-aged parents may provide various types of support to their grown children and parents. In the current study, parents age 40 to 60 (N =92) reported on a survey the support and affection they exchange with each child over age 18 (N =169) and each parent (N=185). The middle-aged generation (G2) differentiated among children (G3) and parents (G1) within families, and provided emotional, financial, and practical help on average to their children. The more dependent the child (G3), the more support was exchanged. Dependence was measured on normative status like education, employment, disability, and crisis as well as the …

In Their Own Words: The Lived Experiences Of Unemployed African American Men, Kenlana R. Ferguson
Dissertations
Due to staggering unemployment rates, African American men's experience with work in the U.S. has historically received widespread attention in the media and social science literature. Terms such as black male unemployment crisis, puzzle, epidemic and catastrophe have been used to describe the unemployment woes of black. Attempts at explaining why African American men are experiencing such difficulty in the world of work has been undertaken across the disciplines, however much of this work has amounted to nothing more than acknowledgement that isolating independent factors as causes does not suffice and that a more interdisciplinary framework is needed if we …

Enhancing The Team Experience In Service Learning Courses, Audrey Falk
Education Faculty Publications
Service learning is pervasive in higher education today, with 31 percent of students at Campus Compact member schools engaging in service activities (Campus Compact, 2009) and universities’ missions and strategic planning documents increasingly aimed at developing engaged citizens. Service learning has many potential benefits for college students; among those benefits is the opportunity to develop and practice teamwork skills. The present paper describes the strategies used in a team-based service learning course to support positive team experiences for students.
