Third Nephi: An Incomparable Scripture, Andrew C. Skinner, Gaye Strathearn
Third Nephi: An Incomparable Scripture, Andrew C. Skinner, Gaye Strathearn
Maxwell Institute Publications
If the Book of Mormon is considered the keystone of the Latter-day Saint religion, then perhaps Third Nephi could be considered the pinnacle of the Book of Mormon. Third Nephi provides a glimpse into those glorious moments when the Savior ministered to a group of Nephite people who trusted in his prophesied appearance. This collection of essays is compiled from lectures given during a two-day symposium on the book of Third Nephi held at BYU in 2008. The chapters investigate a variety of topics from both academic and doctrinal perspectives. The articles include discussions on what Jesus taught and did, …

Pulehu
Mormon Pacific Historical Society
Pulehu Chapel, Pepper Tree and Kula Monument On the slopes of Haleakala is the community of Pulehu. Located there is a small wooden chapel which is probably the oldest LDS chapel in Hawaii. This little chapel is near where some of the first baptisms in Hawaii took place. “This property came into the hands of the Church when Kiki the daughter of Kaala, through a proclamation dated July 16, 1903 conveyed two acres of a former three acre parcel to the Church ‘for . . .the good works and advancement of the gospel of the kingdom of Jesus on this …

The Beginnings Of The International Teacher Education Program (Itep) In The Church Schools Of The South Pacific, Dennis A. Wright
Mormon Pacific Historical Society
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints1 sponsors elementary and secondary schools for students in Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and Kiribati. As a support for the teachers and administrators in these schools, the Church provides in-service and professional development opportunities through the International Teacher Education Program (ITEP). This service is currently provided through Church service missionaries appointed because of their professional credentials in teacher education.2 As adjunct faculty in the School of Education at Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYUH)3, ITEP missionaries teach accredited classes from the BYUH teacher education curriculum. As a result, faculty members in the Church schools have the …

Same-Race Regulatory Resource Depletion;Obstacles Of Black High-Achievers, Shondale Deloach
ETD Archive
Researchers have long been interested in the academic underachievement and disengagement of many African American students. Fordham and Ogbu (1986) offered the acting White phenomenon as one way to understand the problem. Fordham (1996) found that, in order to avoid being accused of acting White, some Black high achievers limit their academic abilities, particularly around Black low achieving students. Black high achievers can also encounter psychological costs as a result of limiting their academic prowess. There is some evidence, according to regulatory resource depletion theory, that altering one's normal thoughts, actions, or feelings in order to serve present circumstances, as …
Positive Pollutions And Cultural Toxins, John Blair Gamber
Positive Pollutions And Cultural Toxins, John Blair Gamber
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
In this innovative study, Positive Pollutions and Cultural Toxins, John Blair Gamber examines urbanity and the results of urban living—traffic, garbage, sewage, waste, and pollution—arguing for a new recognition of all forms of human detritus as part of the natural world and thus for a broadening of our understanding of environmental literature. While much of the discourse surrounding the United States’ idealistic and nostalgic views of itself privileges “clean” living (primarily in rural, small-town, and suburban settings), representations of rurality and urbanity by Chicanas/Chicanos, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans, on the other hand, complicate such generalization. Gamber …
The Ojibwe Journals Of Edmund F. Ely, 1833-1849, Edmund F. Ely
The Ojibwe Journals Of Edmund F. Ely, 1833-1849, Edmund F. Ely
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Twenty-four-year-old Edmund F. Ely, a divinity student from Albany, New York, gave up his preparation for the ministry in 1833 to become a missionary and teacher among the Ojibwe of Lake Superior. During the next sixteen years, Ely lived, taught, and preached among the Ojibwe, keeping a journal of his day-to-day experiences as well as recording ethnographic information about the Ojibwe. From recording his frustrations over the Ojibwe's rejection of Christianity to describing hunting and fishing techniques he learned from his Ojibwe neighbors, Ely’s unique and rich record provides unprecedented insight into early nineteenth-century Ojibwe life and Ojibwe-missionary relations. Theresa …
Exploring Sacred Objects And Their Meanings In Catholic Mexicano Households: Domestic Religious Practices In San Antonio, Mary E. Durocher
Exploring Sacred Objects And Their Meanings In Catholic Mexicano Households: Domestic Religious Practices In San Antonio, Mary E. Durocher
Wayne State University Dissertations
Anthropological literature in the study of material culture argues that person/object interactions are important to the construction and maintenance of social relations and personal identity both in the present and through time. It is through relationships and interactions with things that people come to "know who they are" (Tilley (2007). This line of thinking has led some Latino studies scholars to propose that the retention of traditional aspects of culture, such as religious practices, often serves as a way of negotiating personal or cultural identity in an ever changing social milieu (Sandoval 2006, Aponte and De La Torre 2006). This …
Engaging The Humanities To Address Wildland Fire Issues, Fred Swanson, Nathaniel Brodie, Charles Goodrich
Engaging The Humanities To Address Wildland Fire Issues, Fred Swanson, Nathaniel Brodie, Charles Goodrich
Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports
This project examined existing programs and potential options for collaborations among the humanities, art, science, land management, and public concerning wildfire and wildfire policy and education. These programs and partnerships include creative residencies; conferences, workshops, and symposia; art-science collaborative field studies; and community programs and partnerships. We also reviewed how popular literature frames, reflects and has affected our cultural understanding of wildfire. Our analysis concludes that, compared to the richness of the subject of wildfire, compared to the way wildfire encapsulates all the complexities and controversies of culture, history, and ecology, wildfire’s potential as a literary subject remains largely unfulfilled. …

Atheist Piety: A Religion Of Dogmatic Dubiety, Louis C. Midgley
Atheist Piety: A Religion Of Dogmatic Dubiety, Louis C. Midgley
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The “Special Feature” of this mass-market secular humanist magazine consists of an introduction to “America’s Peculiar Piety” followed by a miscellany of brief, nonscholarly essays critical of The Church of Jesus Christ. The questions posed in the introduction to this flagship atheist magazine go unad dressed in the essays. Some of the essays are personal exit stories by former Latter-day Saints. One is an effort by Robert M. Price to explain away the Book of Mormon without confronting its contents. This is done by ignoring the details of Joseph Smith’s career in order to picture him as the equivalent of …
Daughters Of Waheguru Examining Politics Of Gender In The Global Sikh Community, Ilene Gillispie
Daughters Of Waheguru Examining Politics Of Gender In The Global Sikh Community, Ilene Gillispie
Theses & ETDs
This work aims to add to the Western scholarship on the Sikh religion, which I have found valuable but as of yet narrow in scope. It is vital that we raise awareness about who Sikhs are and what they believe if we wish to reduce the amount of violence and prejudice Sikhs face, which has historically been large. In this work, I speak particularly to the lives of female practitioners, because I see their situation as unique but also highly reflective of a current trend in religious scholarshipthe emergence of feminist theory within and surrounding religious traditions. The information we …
Embodying The Holy Spirit A Phenomenology Of Tongues, Jake Elrod
Embodying The Holy Spirit A Phenomenology Of Tongues, Jake Elrod
Theses & ETDs
In this ethnography, I explore the relationship between forms of transcendental experience and the conceptual construction of reality within a Pentecostal congregation in Greene, Ohio. My research focuses on Baptism of the Holy Spirit, an embodied union with God's animate force (often accompanied by glossolalia, divine communication, and spiritual healing) as an intensely life-changing experience played out in public rituals, personal testimonies, and Pentecostal theology. I will attempt to describe these forms of transcendental experience, their emergence in practice and discourse, and how these functioned to maintain a unified spiritual orientation. I will trace the role of transcendental experiences in …
El-Oh-El Laughing Out Loud In The Book Of Job, Brian D. Johnson
El-Oh-El Laughing Out Loud In The Book Of Job, Brian D. Johnson
Theses & ETDs
Can a reader find comedy in the tragic plot of the Book of Job? This thesis explores that question by focusing on one character who, I argue, provides comedy in the form of comic relief: Elihu. The character of Elihu is important because he provides some levity amidst Job's suffering. To demonstrate this, I explore Stanley Fish's theory on reader-based interpretive strategies and interpretive communities to show how a reader is the ultimate interpretive authority. Armed with this knowledge, I show what role Elihu cannot play. This is the role of an arbiter. Finally, after showing what role he cannot …
The Divine Feminine A Feminist Study Of Goddess Appropriation Within The Jewish Renewal Movement And Western Interpretations Of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, Zoe Rayor
Theses & ETDs
Feminist spirituality is a contemporary religious movement created in order to abolish the harmful remnants of explicit and subtle patriarchal influence within various religious traditions. To counteract the ubiquitous androcentricity found within many religions, along with the pervasive masculine notions of God, practitioners of feminist spirituality integrate a feminine divine figure, or goddess, into their religious retinue. This thesis examines the religious phenomenon of feminine divine appropriation through two case studies. The first chapter explores the contemporary Jewish Renewal movement and its appropriation of the Kabbalistic divine feminine figure, Shekhinah. The second chapter analyzes Western feminists' and scholar-practitioners' use of …
