Introduction To Mary Magdalene: Iconographic Studies From The Middle Ages To The Baroque, Michelle Erhardt, Amy Morris Nov 2012

Introduction To Mary Magdalene: Iconographic Studies From The Middle Ages To The Baroque, Michelle Erhardt, Amy Morris

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

Introduction to Mary Magdalene, Iconographic Studies from the Middle Ages to the Baroque examines the iconographic inventions in Magdalene imagery and the contextual factors that shaped her representation in visual art from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Unique to other saints in the medieval lexicon, images of Mary Magdalene were altered over time to satisfy the changing needs of her patrons as well as her audience. By shedding light on the relationship between the Magdalene and her patrons, both corporate and private, as well as the religious institutions and regions where her imagery is found, this anthology reveals the …

The Japanization Of Karate?: Placing An Intangible Cultural Practice, Noah C.G. Johnson Nov 2012

The Japanization Of Karate?: Placing An Intangible Cultural Practice, Noah C.G. Johnson

Journal of Contemporary Anthropology

Although Okinawa is now under the political administration of Japan, its history has been shaped under the influence of Chinese, Japanese and, most recently, American military domination. Moreover, both Okinawans and the Japanese of the mainland, recognize that Okinawa is differentiated from the rest of Japan by its individual history and distinct cultural practices. One of the most recognizable products of Okinawan culture is karate, at base a martial art but also a cultural practice inscribed with relationships and ideas inherited from wider Okinawan society. At the beginning of the 20th-century this practice was brought to mainland Japan. This paper …

Viewpoint: Reflections On Ludic Dimensions In Hindu-Christian Scholarship, Kenneth R. Valpey Nov 2012

Viewpoint: Reflections On Ludic Dimensions In Hindu-Christian Scholarship, Kenneth R. Valpey

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

AS scholars committed to explore and illuminate the varied regions of thought and practice, text and image, or prescription and custom circumscribed by the rather curious samāsa “Hindu-Christian,” we may do well to pay more thoughtful attention to ludic features of the landscape. Several decades ago Johan Huizinga counted the inclination to play to be so definitive of being human as to merit reference to our species as homo ludens. Happily, some attention is already being given to this in the area of South Asian religion, as Selva Raj and Corinne Dempsey have shown with their edited volume, Sacred Play: …

Toward A Fusion Of Theological Horizons: Constructivist Reflections And Responses To The Question Of Theism In The Yoga Sutra, Graham M. Schweig Nov 2012

Toward A Fusion Of Theological Horizons: Constructivist Reflections And Responses To The Question Of Theism In The Yoga Sutra, Graham M. Schweig

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

IT is important to explore and disclose how--perhaps even why--we are going to speak about Christian and Yogic theism before conducting an exploration on theism in comparative relation between the two traditions. In this kind of discussion, it is inevitable that working definitions of key terms be provided, particular terms that will be clarified and offered to facilitate the discussion. In this study, I examine and draw from the particular studies of three scholars in the field who address the relationship between Christianity and Yoga in order to illuminate the dialectical tension between a resistence toward and the persistence of …

Yoga's 'A-Theistic'-Theism: A New Way Of Thinking About God, Gerald J. Larson

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I want to begin with two intriguing quotations. The first is a passage quoted by John Cottingham in his book, The Spiritual Dimension, in which he mentions what C. S. Pierce calls “abductive inference,” or “inference to the best explanation.” The passage is from Simon Blackburn’s book, Think.

The Malleability Of Yoga: A Response To Christian And Hindu Opponents Of The Popularization Of Yoga, Andrea R. Jain Nov 2012

The Malleability Of Yoga: A Response To Christian And Hindu Opponents Of The Popularization Of Yoga, Andrea R. Jain

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

FOR over three thousand years, people have attached divergent meanings and functions to yoga. Its history has been characterized by moments of continuity, but also by divergence and change. This applies as much to precolonial yoga systems as to modern ones. All of this evidences yoga’s malleability (literally, the capacity to be bent into new shapes without breaking) in the hands of human beings.

Dialogue Between Israelis And Palestinians: Obsolete Approach Or Still Viable Technique In The Middle East Conflict Transformation Toolkit?, Laurie Millman Nov 2012

Dialogue Between Israelis And Palestinians: Obsolete Approach Or Still Viable Technique In The Middle East Conflict Transformation Toolkit?, Laurie Millman

Capstone Collection

During the last thirty years of the 20th century, there was a proliferation of dialogues between Palestinians and Israelis. Participants in early unofficial dialogues sometimes became negotiators for official dialogues, or articulated positions which were later presented in public Track II negotiations such as the Geneva Accords. Nevertheless, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has not been transformed, and seems more intractable now than in many years. Given the optimism, effort, and analysis which have been invested in dialogue, this paper considers the question of whether dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians represents an obsolete approach or a still valuable technique in the …

Strengthening Biblical Historicity Vis-À-Vis Minimalism, 1992-2008 And Beyond, Part 2.1: The Literature Of Perspective, Critique, And Methodology, First Half, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This series of articles covers scholarly works in English which can, at least potentially, be associated with a positive view of biblical historicity regarding the periods preceding the Israelites’ return from exile. Part 2 covers works that treat the concepts and methodological issues at the center of the maximalist-minimalist debate. (Parts 3–5 will cover works on evidences.)

This article, the first half of Part 2, focuses on works that provide a framework in which there exists the realistic possibility for large amounts of Hebrew Scripture to stand as valid historical source material— while still subject to comparison with other sources. …
