Bullying Victimization As A Disability In Public Elementary And Secondary Education, Douglas E. Abrams
Bullying Victimization As A Disability In Public Elementary And Secondary Education, Douglas E. Abrams
Faculty Publications
This article discusses two reasons why likening bullying victimization to an educational disability makes sense. First, face-to-face bullying and cyberbullying impose on student victims the sort of educational deprivation that the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) addresses in the disabilities arena. Second, today’s belated public sensitivity to school bullying victims resembles the belated public sensitivity to students with disabilities that led to passage of the IDEA in 1975.

Obesity In The Geriatric Population, Kimberly A. Brown
Obesity In The Geriatric Population, Kimberly A. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity has been a focus of medical and public health attention for decades; however, a relative paucity of information exists regarding the management of obesity in the geriatric population. It is known that standard, young adult recommendations to manage weight cannot be applied directly to the older population due to the potential of adverse health outcomes, but the most effective strategies are controversial (Heintze et al., 20 l 0). The goal of weight management is unique for this population and poses a challenge for health care providers when managing, treating, and counseling patients. With the current trends of obesity and …
Walled Gardens Of Privacy Or “Binding Corporate Rules?”: A Critical Look At International Protection Of Online Privacy, Joanna Kulesza
Walled Gardens Of Privacy Or “Binding Corporate Rules?”: A Critical Look At International Protection Of Online Privacy, Joanna Kulesza
University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review
A growing concern in the era of cloud computing is protecting Internet users' privacy. This concern is compounded by the fact that there are no effective international solutions. This article considers the latest European Union (EU) proposed development in this area – a regulatory model based on amended Binding Corporate Rules (BCR) – as introduced by the EU Justice Commissioner. These planned changes would have worldwide effects on international companies' online activities in transboundary cyberspace.
After providing a background on the concept of defining privacy in general, the article describes the BCR proposal, and proceeds to consider the likelihood of …
Criminal Law—No Stitches For Snitches: The Need For A Duty-To-Report Law In Arkansas, Breanna Trombley
Criminal Law—No Stitches For Snitches: The Need For A Duty-To-Report Law In Arkansas, Breanna Trombley
University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review
It is difficult to get witnesses of brutal crimes to step up and act. This article argues that every state, including Arkansas, would be well served by implementing laws that would require individuals to notify law enforcement officials when they witness certain offenses.
First, the note discusses the common law history of the no-duty-to-aid principle, as well as duty-to-assist laws in other jurisdictions and current Arkansas reporting statutes. Next, the note examines the need for a specific duty-to-report in Arkansas. Then, a duty-to-report statute is proposed for consideration by the Arkansas Legislature. Thereafter, the note addresses imposition of both civil …

Northern Stars Safety Village: Program Evaluation, Gawain Guedry, Marcie Jackson, Joanne Witter
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The City of North Las Vegas (CLNV) and the North Las Vegas Fire Department (NLVFD), circa 2007, embarked on a mission to create a safety village for children. The initial intent of the program is to provide a place where children can learn real-life strategies for dealing with emergencies while developing a positive attitude towards safety. The fire department has accomplished a significant amount of preliminary work; however, the program currently remains in the conceptualization phase, as they have been unable to develop a tangible product. This, in large part, is due to the economic crisis Southern Nevada has been …

Insecure Approaches To Notions Of Security: Introduction, Susana S. Martins, Susana Araújo
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
“Security” and “insecurity” are words which are relentlessly alive in politics and the media. Since the 9/11 attacks, followed by the 2004 train attacks in Madrid and the London bombings in 2005, the US and, also to some extent, Europe, among other geopolitical powers, have been investing extensively in programs for national and international security. Exacerbated by the mass-media, discourses about security have circulated and propagated worldwide, igniting security policies and practices which have significant impact on our social organization, both locally and globally. However, one could argue that despite these tendencies, the meanings of security are far …

Dying To Be Free: An Analysis Of Wisconsin's Restructured Compassionate Release Statute, Nicole M. Murphy
Dying To Be Free: An Analysis Of Wisconsin's Restructured Compassionate Release Statute, Nicole M. Murphy
Marquette Law Review
In 2009, the Wisconsin Legislature enacted comprehensive criminal sentencing reforms under 2009 Wisconsin Act 28 in an effort to shrink the State’s swollen corrections budget and reduce the impending multi-billion dollar deficit. However, the new early release procedures sparked bitter partisan debate among state leaders, culminating in the repeal of the early release amendments a mere two years later. This Comment focuses on one of the early release amendments reserved for ill and elderly inmates, termed “compassionate release.” The Comment traces the history of compassionate release legislation in Wisconsin and outlines arguments in support and opposition of the program. The …

Publications
This research involved the use of high-resolution aerial photography obtained from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to aid the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) in monitoring and documenting State Roadway structures and associated issues. Using geo-referenced UAV high resolution aerial photographic imagery, the project documented the before, during and after stages of the Southern Parkway construction near the new Saint George International airport, in addition to photographing and classifying wetland plant species in the Utah Lake wetland mitigation bank on the North East corner of Utah Lake.
Religious Freedom And Inmate Grooming Standards, Dawinder S. Sidhu
Religious Freedom And Inmate Grooming Standards, Dawinder S. Sidhu
Faculty Scholarship
In this Article, I argue that the Eleventh Circuit's general legal approach to such religious freedom claims and its support for restrictive inmate grooming standards are no longer sustainable. That is, a substantial and increasing number of jurisdictions have been able to respond to their penological concerns-the same penological interests that undergird and justify the restrictive inmate grooming standards adopted by the states within the Eleventh Circuit-without abridging the rights of inmates to grow their hair in accordance with their respective faiths. Accordingly, I posit that the Eleventh Circuit's jurisprudence must not only be revisited, but replaced with a more …

Unveiling The Veil Ban Dilemma: Turkey And Beyond, Adriana Piatti-Crocker, Laman Tasch
Unveiling The Veil Ban Dilemma: Turkey And Beyond, Adriana Piatti-Crocker, Laman Tasch
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines Turkey’s veil ban policy, which has been in place since the 1980s. The dilemma is whether Muslim-veil bans impinge on the rights of expression and religion at both national and international levels or, whether states may legally justify a ban on the basis of secularism and women’s rights. Even though the idea of freedom “from religion” in Turkey has been closely linked to the European notion of secularism during most of Turkey’s republican history, more recently, secularism and veil bans in Turkey and in the West have been construed quite distinctly. This shows an increasing gap between …
