Characteristics Of At-Risk Students, Michael Sollitto, Robert K. Gable

K-12 Education

This study focused on a major problem facing today’s educators: high school dropouts. Research questions addressed differences in teacher perspectives of the characteristics of struggling students. Differences in teachers’ perspectives based on teaching level (elementary & secondary) were examined. The researcher conducted focus groups with a total of 12 teachers. The research was conducted in two suburban districts. Focus group questions were designed following a survey administered to 108 suburban public school teachers. The survey responses reported previously identified four dimensions of characteristics of at-risk students: behavior, achievement, family involvement, and family background. The data from the focus groups can …

Perception Of Space In Topological Forms, Dincer Savaskan Oct 2012

Perception Of Space In Topological Forms, Dincer Savaskan

Architecture Thesis Prep

"With recent development of computer technologies there has been change in our notion of materiality. We can define our age as flow of information and architecture capture this flow and creates more complex conceptions and interactions through the space. Recent researches on materialism, typological forms, field gradients and diagramming define a new methodology in design approach, which can respond the dynamism and flow. However architectural form is still inseparable from the way we experience the world, which involves our senses and perceptions. It is possible to adopt cinematic techniques of collage and sequencing in computer-generated forms to create continuous references …

Representing The Experiential, The Anticipatory, And The Unreal, Laya Pattana Oct 2012

Representing The Experiential, The Anticipatory, And The Unreal, Laya Pattana

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The methodology will be tested in the cinema type because of its promise of escapist hyperreality. It is spatial, highly personal and privatized, and firmly anti-architecture. Because the film is self-contained, its space is irrelevant. The representation of experience can be reclaimed as a design strategy to activate the movie theatre typology--a typology that architecture has long since lost."

Surpassing Spectacle: Architectual Representation & Image-Based Society, Patrick Ruggerio Oct 2012

Surpassing Spectacle: Architectual Representation & Image-Based Society, Patrick Ruggerio

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The project will critique current modes of operation by a linear problem-solving design process. By acting through representation as both a vehicle for developing design and as a means of communicating and experiencing it, the project will engage the design of a tactile deployment of architecture and effective means of communicating its intent. The architecture will function in the way that the visual arts do in terms of their scale and engagement in cultural issues. Research into tangible artifacts of the site will yield a combination of image, drawing and model forms of representation. Through this analysis, a strategy of …

School As Community Center: Redefining The Relationship Between The Community And The School In Minsk, Belarus, Kate Talkachova Oct 2012

School As Community Center: Redefining The Relationship Between The Community And The School In Minsk, Belarus, Kate Talkachova

Architecture Thesis Prep

"A society that values education should place emphasis on the facilities and incorporate in them the values and progress, not blindly stick to the traditional. For a country fighting to regain its identity, it is important that the divisions between the neighborhoods are blurred and a sense of a whole is created. With the school as community center, education remains the central focus, as well as provides the necessary link to the surrounding neighborhoods, becoming more than just a physical center, but an activity center as well."

"The goal is not to replace our understanding of collective memory, but through fostering an awareness of self and one’s relationship to the past and site, to distinguish memory as an entity distinct from representation and objectification."

Dipl 6129 Preventing Humanitarian Crisis, Li-Wen Zhang Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

The term "humanitarian crisis" is understood to mean any situation in which there is an exceptional and widespread threat to human life, health or subsistence. In such humanitarian crisis people are killed, or suffer from violence, displacement, hunger and disease.

With the increase in intrastate conflict, the growth of international civil society, the increased recognition of human rights, and the growing appreciation of global interconnectivity and the responsibility of governments to their citizens, states are facing a pressure to protect the civilians in countries other than their own.

At the 2005 World Summit, the world's leaders committed themselves to the …

Virginia Woolf And British Russophilia, Michael Lackey Oct 2012

Virginia Woolf And British Russophilia, Michael Lackey

English Publications

Roberta Rubenstein convincingly demonstrates that England was infatuated with all things Russian between the years 1912 and 1922. These were some of the most formative years in the development of Woolf ’s writing and thinking, and consequently, Rubenstein argues that prominent Russian writers heavily influenced Woolf the writer and Woolf the critic. Given the degree to which Russian writers influenced Woolf in particular and England more generally, Rubenstein suggests that the Russian influence had a decisive impact in determining the shape of British Modernism.

01: Voices: Usu’S Latino/A Voices Project, Randy Williams

Latino Voices in Cache Valley

Utah State University Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives Division (SCA) is home to rich oral history collections. SCA endeavors to preserve Northern Utah history and heritage by collecting the voices of everyday men and women. Our collections range from the poignant reminiscences of those who survived Idaho’s Teton Dam disaster to the recollections of modern-day cowboys.

Our oral history efforts serve to enhance SCA’s other documentary sources, such as manuscript, folklore and photograph collections. At times, oral history may be a first effort of discovering the history of some segments of our community. One such segment is Northern Utah’s Latino …

"They Are Destroying Our Futures": Sexual Violence Against Girls In Zambia's Schools, Women And Law In Southern Africa Trust-Zambia, Cornell Law School. Avon Global Center For Women And Justice, Cornell Law School. International Human Rights Clinic

Avon Global Center for Women and Justice and Dorothea S. Clarke Program in Feminist Jurisprudence

This report examines the problem of sexual violence against girls in Zambian schools. In Zambia, many girls are raped, sexually abused, harassed, and assaulted by teachers and male classmates. They are also subjected to sexual harassment and attack while travelling to and from school. Such abuse is a devastating and often overlooked manifestation of the gender-based violence that occurs in numerous settings in Zambia and other countries throughout the world.

This report explores these issues from an international human rights perspective, drawing upon extensive desk research and interviews with 105 schoolgirls and many other stakeholders in Zambia’s Lusaka Province. The …

Did The Arctic Ice Recover? Demographics Of True And False Climate Facts, Lawrence C. Hamilton Oct 2012

Did The Arctic Ice Recover? Demographics Of True And False Climate Facts, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Sociology

Abstract

Beliefs about climate change divide the U.S. public along party lines more distinctly than hot social issues. Research finds that better-educated orinformed respondents are more likelytoalign with their partiesonclimate change. This information-elite polarization resembles a process of biased assimilation first described in psychological experiments. In nonexperimental settings, college graduates could be prone to biased assimilation if they more effectively acquire information that supports their beliefs. Recent national and statewide survey data show response patterns consistent with biased assimilation (and biased guessing) contributing to the correlation observed between climate beliefs and knowledge. The survey knowledge questions involve key, uncontroversial observations …
