Stakeholder Views On Children’S Mental Health Services, Adriana Rodriguez Oct 2012

Stakeholder Views On Children’S Mental Health Services, Adriana Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

Identification of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) has been an important development; however recently, some shortcomings of the approach have been highlighted. These complexities have led to a surge in transportability research in mental health services science with goals of identifying needed strategies to encourage the adoption of innovations. The mental health system ecological (MHSE) model is an approach necessary to assist with closing this gap effectively as it integrates mental health contexts: client-level, provider-level, intervention-specific, service delivery, organizational, and service system characteristics. The aim of this study is to use the MHSE model to examine perspectives of mental health stakeholders on …

Jewish Perspectives On Christian Privilege: A Consensual Qualitative Study, Robert Kinney Oct 2012

Jewish Perspectives On Christian Privilege: A Consensual Qualitative Study, Robert Kinney

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Although multicultural considerations, privilege, and oppression are of current interest across the field, much of the extant research has failed to explore religiosity as a component of the psychological literature. Using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) the authors set out to gain an understanding of Christian privilege and the impact it has on Jewish Identity. A sample of 12 adult, American, non-Orthodox Jews were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. The interview data was collected to better understand the manifestations of Christian privilege and the impact of said issues on participant’s lives and identities. Seven themes were identified (1) Personal Conceptualization …

Man : Woman : Human, Maressa Tosto Merwarth Oct 2012

Man : Woman : Human, Maressa Tosto Merwarth

Theses

The present day atmosphere seems to be so much about one or the other. Whether it is politics, religion, or even something as small as Apple or PC, it seems like it is impossible to exist in the middle; you either "are" or "are not." With the blinders firmly strapped on, there is so much not coming into view. By only seeing things in absolutes, is what we DO NOT experience and believe as important as what we DO?

This is a cumbersome question without a simple yes or no answer. However, rather than attempting to create some kind of …

Hitchcock And The Scapegoat: Violence And Victimization In The Wrong Man, David Humbert Oct 2012

Hitchcock And The Scapegoat: Violence And Victimization In The Wrong Man, David Humbert

Journal of Religion & Film

Alfred Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man tells the story of Emmanuel Balestrero, arrested for a crime committed by his physical double. This paper examines the theme of the scapegoat in the film and argues that it portrays in miniature what theorist René Girard has described as a mimetic crisis. While the plight of the central character is usually portrayed as a product of blind chance, it is instead due to the mimetic fears, desires, and vanities of the members of society that accuse him. The fate of Balestrero reveals the operation of a specific kind of scapegoat mechanism that has its …

The Reenchantment Of Eschatology: Religious Secular Apocalypse In Akira Kurosawa’S Dreams, Justin Heinzekehr Oct 2012

The Reenchantment Of Eschatology: Religious Secular Apocalypse In Akira Kurosawa’S Dreams, Justin Heinzekehr

Journal of Religion & Film

The possibility of nuclear destruction in the modern world has created a secular eschatology which, unlike religious eschatologies, creates nihilism and apathy rather than ultimate meaning. The Japanese film Dreams, by Akira Kurosawa, depicts this secularized eschatology as well as a counter-apocalyptic utopia. However, Kurosawa does not merely repeat the Western visions of nuclear apocalypse, but uses Japanese folk religion as a lens through which this apocalypse can be viewed. By doing so, Kurosawa creates a specifically Eastern response to nuclear destruction: a “religious secular” eschatology. Despite its lack of critical success, Dreams provides a valuable alternative for Western …

The Magdalene Sisters: How To Solve The Problem Of ‘Bad’ Girls, Irena S. M. Makarushka Ph.D. Oct 2012

The Magdalene Sisters: How To Solve The Problem Of ‘Bad’ Girls, Irena S. M. Makarushka Ph.D.

Journal of Religion & Film

This article focuses on Peter Mullan’s The Magdalene Sisters which explores the scope and complex nature of the punishment experienced by the women incarcerated in the Magdalene Asylum near Dublin. The analysis reflects my long-standing interest in religion, film and feminist values as well as my revulsion at the sexual abuse and predatory practices of countless Catholic priests and nuns. It is the same revulsion that drove Mullan to bring the horrors of the Magdalene Asylums out from beneath the culturally sanctioned shadows into plain sight. My analysis focuses not only on women as victims of abuse, but also on …

Cassius Dio's Agrippa-Maecenas Debate: An Operational Code Analysis, Eric Adler Oct 2012

Cassius Dio's Agrippa-Maecenas Debate: An Operational Code Analysis, Eric Adler

Classics Faculty Publications

This article discusses Cassius Dio's political thought in his Agrippa-Maecenas debate (52.2-40) through the use of a form of content analysis developed by political scientists called "operational code analysis." It offers a description of operational code analysis, which demonstrates the value of this method to the debate. It then presents an examination of Dio's operational code, from which one can glean his philosophical and instrumental views on politics. It argues, inter alia, that the Agrippa address is based on the same epistemological foundations as the Maecenean corollary. Further, the article stresses that the Agrippa oration remains consistent with views Dio …

The Strongest Wind, Vinesh Kannan '15 Oct 2012

The Strongest Wind, Vinesh Kannan '15

2012 Fall Semester

The essence of the American Dream is that it promises those who embrace it a spirit of hope that they can become anything they wish, doctors, lawyers, mothers, volunteers, or even heroes. Just as these dreams are different, the way in which Americans embrace them is just diverse. When considering the conglomeration of identities in a society such as that of America, such differences can often be strange, unfamiliar, and even harsh from a new perspective. In her short story, “Rules of the Game,” Amy Tan, a writer of Asian descent herself, prompts her audience to ponder a new perspective, …

Condemning Fair Market Value: An Appraisal Of Eminent Domain's Just Compensation, Paige Boldt Oct 2012

Condemning Fair Market Value: An Appraisal Of Eminent Domain's Just Compensation, Paige Boldt

Texas Wesleyan Journal of Real Property Law

Part II of this Comment discusses the origins and development of eminent domain in the United States and Texas as well as briefly exploring the judicial developments in the interpretation of public use in the United States and Texas. As discussed below, case law has articulated the breadth of the public use definition to include utility and development plans that are for public purposes. This breadth and delegation of authority encompasses a wider range of property that may be taken than originally conceived without any sort of balancing growth in protection for landowners. Part II also discusses the origins, modern …
