Seizing Opportunity: A Special Invitation Collection, Michael Williams

Administrative Issues Journal

The AIJ editorial board constantly looks for ways to keep the journal professionally relevant. With this in mind, we approached Dr. Michael Williams, Associate Dean of the MBA Program for the School of Business and Technology at Thomas Edison State College, about writing an introduction to our 2012 conference theme, Seizing Opportunities. Dr. Williams is a scholar-practitioner who offers a unique philosophical insight into the import of seizing opportunities in our professional and personal lives. He was excited about exploring the theme for this issue through the lens of change as a nexus of opportunity. We hope you find this …

When Less Is More: Evolutionary Origins Of The Affect Heuristic, Jerald D. Kralik, Eric R. Xu, Emily J. Knight, Sara A. Khan, William J. Levine Oct 2012

When Less Is More: Evolutionary Origins Of The Affect Heuristic, Jerald D. Kralik, Eric R. Xu, Emily J. Knight, Sara A. Khan, William J. Levine

Dartmouth Scholarship

The human mind is built for approximations. When considering the value of a large aggregate of different items, for example, we typically do not summate the many individual values. Instead, we appear to form an immediate impression of the likeability of the option based on the average quality of the full collection, which is easier to evaluate and remember. While useful in many situations, this affect heuristic can lead to apparently irrational decision-making. For example, studies have shown that people are willing to pay more for a small set of high-quality goods than for the same set of high-quality goods …

Two-Factor Theory – At The Intersection Of Health Care Management And Patient Satisfaction, Josef Bohm Oct 2012

Two-Factor Theory – At The Intersection Of Health Care Management And Patient Satisfaction, Josef Bohm

Publications and Research

Using data obtained from the 2004 Joint Canadian/United States Survey of Health, an analytic model using principles derived from Herzberg’s motivational hygiene theory was developed for evaluating patient satisfaction with health care. The analysis sought to determine whether survey variables associated with consumer satisfaction act as Hertzberg factors and contribute to survey participants’ self-reported levels of health care satisfaction. To validate the technique, data from the survey were analyzed using logistic regression methods and then compared with results obtained from the two-factor model. The findings indicate a high degree of correlation between the two methods. The two-factor analytical methodology offers …

The Dunning-Kruger Effect And Siuc University’S Aviation Students, Samuel R. Pavel, Michael F. Robertson, Bryan T. Harrison

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This paper describes a two-part study on the Dunning-Kruger effect in SIUC University’s aviation students. The Dunning-Kruger effect indicates that individuals with lower skill or knowledge levels have unrealistic positive images of their capabilities compared to their peers. Results indicate that the Dunning-Kruger effect is present in SIUC aviation students. Students scoring lower on both a grammar test and a pilot knowledge test grossly overestimated their ability, while higher scoring students underestimated their ability. Additional research using other pilot training programs and other aviation industry safety personnel should be undertaken before any generalizations can be made. However, this study indicates …

Reconsidering And Re-Conceptualizing Kinesiology, T. G. Johnson Oct 2012

Reconsidering And Re-Conceptualizing Kinesiology, T. G. Johnson

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this article is to delineate a more humanistic view of kinesiology by drawing on the rich, but often overlooked, phenomenology of movement literature (Arnold, 1979; Brown & Payne, 2009; Merleau-Ponty, 1962). Brown and Payne (2009) maintain that "phenomenology is a reaction against...the scientization of [kinesiology] that sees its conceptualization, contextualization, representation, and legitimation primarily as a science" (p. 423). By drawing on the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1962) and Peter Arnold (1979), I argue that kinesiology is not only a scientific discipline charged with creating and disseminating scientifically-based knowledge, but also a field of study that encompasses …
