An Exploration Into The Reality Of Media Perceptions: The Depictions Of Women Public Relations Practitioners In Reality Television, Cherese E. Colston Oct 2012

An Exploration Into The Reality Of Media Perceptions: The Depictions Of Women Public Relations Practitioners In Reality Television, Cherese E. Colston

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Reality television is a media staple for this generation. Reality programs including Jersey Shore, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and Teen Mom 2 are among the most watched programs in the United States. In the last five years, reality television has highlighted professions including Public Relations. However, these new reality shows depict an unrealistic image of female practitioners in the PR field. These negative portrayals have been analyzed in film, yet there is a lack of research in regards to reality television. The purpose of this study is to analyze the portrayal of women in the Public Relations …

Do Goals Matter In Engineering Education? An Exploration Of How Goals Influence Outcomes For First Robotics Participants, Jeanine L. Skorinko, James K. Doyle, Gretar Tryggvason Oct 2012

Do Goals Matter In Engineering Education? An Exploration Of How Goals Influence Outcomes For First Robotics Participants, Jeanine L. Skorinko, James K. Doyle, Gretar Tryggvason

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

It has long been recognized that engineers need a variety of skills, including technical and social, to succeed professionally. Attempts to include social skills (i.e., communication, teamwork, and leadership) in engineering education are relatively recent (i.e., within the last decade). Thus, the current study investigates whether social goals influence academic and social outcomes. Four hundred and three highschool aged robotics participants (262 male; 146 female; 22 not specified) completed a survey about their experiences in FIRST Prior to completing the survey, participants learned that an important goal of FIRST was a) social networking, b) academic learning, or c) no goal. …

Positive Emotion And Impulsivity In Individuals With Bipolar I Disorder, Jennifer Y. Nam Oct 2012

Positive Emotion And Impulsivity In Individuals With Bipolar I Disorder, Jennifer Y. Nam

Open Access Dissertations

Impulsivity as a symptom during mania is well documented, but less is known about the driving factors behind these impulsive acts. Perhaps this is because impulsivity is a term that encompasses multiple facets. There is evidence for a type of impulsivity in which extreme sensitivity to positive affective states can influence cognitive processes, such as error detection and identification of threatening cues. This can ultimately lead to engagement in impulsive actions during elevated mood states. Among people who are vulnerable to mania, positive moods have larger or more pervasive effects than they have on other people. While there is more …

Effect Of Rotating Acoustic Stimulus On Heart Rate Variability In Healthy Adults, Bhaskar Roy Oct 2012

Effect Of Rotating Acoustic Stimulus On Heart Rate Variability In Healthy Adults, Bhaskar Roy

Articles - Patient Care

Acoustic stimulus can modulate the Autonomic Nervous System. However, previous reports on this topic are conflicting and inconclusive. In this study we have shown, how rotating acoustic stimulus, a novel auditory binaural stimulus, can change the autonomic balance of the cardiac system. We have used Heart rate Variability (HRV), an indicator of autonomic modulation of heart, both in time and frequency domain to analyze the effect of stimulus on 31 healthy adults.

A decrease in the heart rate accompanied with an increase in SD and RMSSD indices on linear analysis was observed post-stimulation. In the Poincaré Plot, Minor Axis (SD1), …

Assessing The Causal Effect Of Policies: An Approach Based On Stochastic Interventions, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan Oct 2012

Assessing The Causal Effect Of Policies: An Approach Based On Stochastic Interventions, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Stochastic interventions are a powerful tool to define parameters that measure the causal effect of a realistic intervention that intends to alter the population distribution of an exposure. In this paper we follow the approach described in D\'iaz and van der Laan (2011) to define and estimate the effect of an intervention that is expected to cause a truncation in the population distribution of the exposure. The observed data parameter that identifies the causal parameter of interest is established, as well as its efficient influence function under the non parametric model. Inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW), augmented IPTW and …

Symbolic Interactionism And Moral Hazards In Higher Education, Louella Moore Oct 2012

Symbolic Interactionism And Moral Hazards In Higher Education, Louella Moore

Administrative Issues Journal

Public colleges and universities today are more than institutions of academic study. They play a role in the economic and social life of their communities by engaging in partnerships aimed at enhancing their scope and brand image. This paper suggests these partnered activities do more than just manage costs and replace state support during economic downturns; the activities are also central to managing the image and political scope of the institution. This paper presents an exploratory, multi-disciplinary examination of the market forces and potential moral hazards inherent in hybrid public/private partnerships in higher education. Agency and symbolic interaction concepts are …

An Autoethnographic Analysis Of School Leadership In An Alternative Education Environment, Leroi Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This research represents an extremely personalized account of the complicated field of educational leadership and analysis of my journey through two very different alternative education environments. I documented my leadership experience for this self study to further understand how my leadership impacted two alternative educational settings. Through the vantage point of my lens, I documented and recorded my experiences through artifacts, a digital journal, and personal documentation as an administrator using the qualitative method of autoethnography. This type of qualitative research brings the reader inside of my personal experiences as an administrator. Every school district has its own climate and …

Influences Of Labour Participation Among Persons With Disabilities: A Systematic Review And Best Evidence Synthesis, Henry G. Harder, Joshua A. Rush, Sarah E. Nelson

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

A systematic literature review was conducted to assess the individual, organisation, societal, and legal influences of labour participation among individuals with a disability. Methods: Nine databases were searched, for peer-reviewed studies of individual, organisation, societal, and legal influences among disabled populations published between 1990 and 2010.

Results: Of a total of 809 papers initially selected, only 46 studies were deemed to be of sufficient quality to be included in the review. Conclusions: Numerous studies have examined labour participation among persons with physical disabilities, some among persons with chronic disabilities, and few among persons with mental disabilities. Strong evidence was found …

Methodological Precision In Qualitative Research: Slavish Adherence Or “Following The Yellow Brick Road?”, John R. Cutcliffe, Henry G. Harder

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative research has withstood many challenges on its way to becoming a credible research paradigm, though it remains the case that the paradigm contains ongoing methodological debates. One such debate is, for want of a better expression, the necessity for methodological precision (fundamentalism or purity). While it is accurate that research methodologies are somewhat fluid in that they are refined over time, it is equally correct that some researchers fall into a trap in claiming such fluidity is the reason for their imprecise use of a research methodology. Given that scientific knowledge is inextricably linked to the practice of method …

A Preliminary Qualitative Evaluation Of The Virginia Gold Quality Improvement Program, Gerald A. Craver, Amy K. Burkett Oct 2012

A Preliminary Qualitative Evaluation Of The Virginia Gold Quality Improvement Program, Gerald A. Craver, Amy K. Burkett

The Qualitative Report

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) perform an important role in the long-term care system because they provide the majority of paid care to nursing facility residents. Unfortunately, annual CNA turnover often exceeds 100 percent nationally. Many factors account for this, including stressful working conditions, low pay, and limited benefits. The end result of high turnover is compromised continuity of care for residents, which often leads to poor quality and substandard care. In an effort to improve quality of care and staffing, the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services in 2009 implemented a pilot program, known as the Virginia Gold Quality Improvement …

Enhancement Of Entrepreneurial Leadership: A Case Focusing On A Model Of Successful Conflict Management Skills, Anita Leffel, Cory Hallam, John Darling

Administrative Issues Journal

The purpose of this paper is to present a case study focusing on a new technology start-up firm, founded by two graduate students, an engineer and a business major, who met during their university studies. The case is timely, in that only ten percent of new product introductions result in a profitable business. The causes of failure are numerous and include the following: the market may create failure; inadequate funding and capitalization; and competition from established enterprises. Several research studies also point to rising indications of interfunctional conflict in high technology companies. One reason may be that, today, management teams …

Human Optokinetic Nystagmus: A Stochastic Analysis., J Waddington, Cm Harris Oct 2012

Human Optokinetic Nystagmus: A Stochastic Analysis., J Waddington, Cm Harris

School of Psychology

Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is a fundamental gaze-stabilizing response found in almost all vertebrates, in which eye movements attempt to compensate for the optic flow caused by self-motion. It is an alternating sequence of slow compensatory eye movements made in the direction of stimulus motion and fast eye movements made predominantly in the opposite direction. The timing and amplitude of these slow phases (SPs) and quick phases (QPs) are remarkably variable, and the cause of this variability is poorly understood. In this study principal components analysis was performed on OKN data to illustrate that the variability in correlation matrices across individuals …

Analyzing Self-Similar And Fractal Properties Of The C. Elegans Neural Network, Tyler M. Reese, Antoni Brzoska, Daniel J. Kelleher

Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles

The brain is one of the most studied and highly complex systems in the biological world. While much research has concentrated on studying the brain directly, our focus is the structure of the brain itself: at its core an interconnected network of nodes (neurons). A better understanding of the structural connectivity of the brain should elucidate some of its functional properties. In this paper we analyze the connectome of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Consisting of only 302 neurons, it is one of the better-understood neural networks. Using a Laplacian Matrix of the 279-neuron “giant component” of the network, we …

The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act: Why It Is Important For Women’S Health, Mary Fanning Oct 2012

The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act: Why It Is Important For Women’S Health, Mary Fanning

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) on March 23, 2010 ending the long history of disparity in access to health care services between insured and uninsured persons. Disparity between women and men in obtaining health insurance coverage is also corrected in the act. Women’s organizations that have focused attention on women’s distinctive health needs over the past century and a half laid the foundation for provisions in the legislation that address women’s health. This article addresses health insurance coverage, its impact on health, the particular challenges women have confronted in seeking coverage, …
