Beyond Biases And Barriers: Incorporating Women Into International Clinical Research, Bridget R. Nugent Oct 2012

Beyond Biases And Barriers: Incorporating Women Into International Clinical Research, Bridget R. Nugent

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

The application of ethical principles in medical research has been a challenging issue because of the multiplicity of health care systems and the variations that exist in standards of care around the globe. This paper addresses the human rights issues that arise from the unethical treatment of women in clinical research worldwide. It includes the history of international human rights legislation as well as the problems that arose because of the exclusion of women from clinical trials. This paper includes a model for ethical clinical research based on the theories of a biologist and human rights scholar and a bio-ethicist, …

Seizing Opportunities Moment By Moment: The Effects Of An 8-Week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course On Personal Epistemological Beliefs And Implications For Academic Program Administration, Carrie J. Boden-Mcgill, Mazen Homound Oct 2012

Seizing Opportunities Moment By Moment: The Effects Of An 8-Week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course On Personal Epistemological Beliefs And Implications For Academic Program Administration, Carrie J. Boden-Mcgill, Mazen Homound

Administrative Issues Journal

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses that teach individuals to “live in the present moment” have been shown to improve health and well-being; however, there seems to be very little research into how MBSR may affect the way we think about the nature of knowledge, also known as epistemology. The researchers developed this study in an effort to determine if MBSR techniques would have an impact on personal epistemological beliefs and the implications for academic program administration. Though this study is currently a pilot study, early results seem to indicate a statistically significant change in the area of “Quick Learning.” This …

Monitoring Students And Enforcing Information Technology Use Policies In Universities, Jimmy D. Speers Oct 2012

Monitoring Students And Enforcing Information Technology Use Policies In Universities, Jimmy D. Speers

Administrative Issues Journal

This paper presents the results of an Internet survey of university Information Technology (IT) managers on the use/abuse of IT resources by a university’s students. The survey sought data on university size, public/private organization, whether there were policies in place on acceptable use of IT resources, possible student use and actions, and finally how IT resources were monitored if they were monitored. Results revealed that most universities had policies on the proper use of IT resources but were very unlikely to monitor use/abuse of IT resources mainly due to a lack of personnel. Some potential abuses were identified and respondents …

Algorithmic Decomposition Of Shuffle On Words, Franziska Biegler, Mark Daley, Ian Mcquillan Oct 2012

Algorithmic Decomposition Of Shuffle On Words, Franziska Biegler, Mark Daley, Ian Mcquillan

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

We investigate shuffle-decomposability into two words. We give an algorithm which takes as input a DFA M (under certain conditions) and determines the unique candidate decomposition into words u and v such that L(M) = u v ifM is shuffle decomposable, in time O(|u| + |v|). Even though this algorithm does not determine whether or not the DFA is shuffle decomposable, the sublinear time complexity of only determining the two words under the assumption of decomposability is surprising given the complexity of shuffle, and demonstrates an interesting property of the operation. We also show that for given words u and …

Introduction: Sex, Sexuality, And Gender As Useful Categories In Environmental History, Nancy Unger Oct 2012

Introduction: Sex, Sexuality, And Gender As Useful Categories In Environmental History, Nancy Unger

History

This book is an effort to explain these kinds of extreme gendered divisions and to offer an enriched understanding of the powerful interplay between environment and sex, sexuality, and gender. The synergy produced by that interplay has been significant throughout American history, but it cannot be adequately understood and appreciated as long as those fields are discussed as discrete entities. The fields of gender and environment are growing, but scholars have seldom joined them together in analysis or heeded historian Carolyn Merchant's call that a gendered perspective be added to conceptual frameworks in environmental history.5 They have not offered a …

Research Brief: "Impact Of The Seeking Safety Program On Clinical Outcomes Among Homeless Female Veterans With Psychiatric Disorders", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the effect of the Seeking Safety program's services on improvement in PTSD, psychiatric symptoms, and social support among homeless female veterans. In policy and practice, clinicians should be trained on how to use the program to better serve homeless female veterans, and policymakers should push for clinician training for those who work with homeless veterans. Suggestions for future research include applying this study and the Seeking Safety program to non-VA healthcare systems, assessing substance use within the program, and assessing the long-term effects of the Seeking Safety program.

The Effects Of Response Interruption And Redirection On Language Skills In Children With Vocal Stereotypy, Tamara Leigh Perry Oct 2012

The Effects Of Response Interruption And Redirection On Language Skills In Children With Vocal Stereotypy, Tamara Leigh Perry

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Vocal stereotypy is a common, skill-disruptive behavior in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Response interruption and redirection (RIRD), the delivery of demands contingent on the occurrence of vocal stereotypy, is an intervention that is gaining empirical support for reducing vocal stereotypy and increasing appropriate language. However, little is known about the efficacy of RIRD when combined with early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI), the recommended treatment approach for children with ASD, and its effects on the acquisition of language skills. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of RIRD when delivered during EIBI programming. Participants were …

Navigating Life As An Avatar: The Shifting Identities-In-Practice Of A Girl Player In A Tween Virtual World, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai Oct 2012

Navigating Life As An Avatar: The Shifting Identities-In-Practice Of A Girl Player In A Tween Virtual World, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In this chapter we study how one girl learned to participate in what was for her a new setting of play – a virtual world called Whyville.net with an emphasis on science education, populated by over a million young people ages eight to sixteen. Girls in particular have become prominent players in virtual worlds, a trend counter to many early observations that documented the absence of girls and women in gaming and technology at large (e.g., Cassell & Jenkins, 1998). The study of virtual worlds as play spaces then allows us to continue a conversation about gender and gaming to …

Identification Of Faction Groups And Leaders In Web-Based Intelligent Argumentation System For Collaborative Decision Support, Ravi Santosh Arvapally, Xiaoqing Liu, Wei Jiang Oct 2012

Identification Of Faction Groups And Leaders In Web-Based Intelligent Argumentation System For Collaborative Decision Support, Ravi Santosh Arvapally, Xiaoqing Liu, Wei Jiang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Argumentation is an important and critical process in a collaborative decision-making environment. Several argumentation frameworks and systems have been proposed for collaborative decision making earlier. However, limited decision support is provided to stakeholders. in an argumentation process, stakeholders tend to form groups, called faction groups based on their opinions and exchange of arguments. Each faction group is usually led by a faction leader in the group. Identification of faction groups and leaders in argumentation becomes an important challenge which has not been addressed adequately in the past. the faction assessment in argumentation provides the decision maker with more information about …

On The Genetic And Environmental Associations Between Body Composition, Depression Symptoms And Smoking Behavior., Roseann Peterson Oct 2012

On The Genetic And Environmental Associations Between Body Composition, Depression Symptoms And Smoking Behavior., Roseann Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a serious public health crisis and recent estimates of its incidence are the highest in United States history, with 35% and 17% of American adults and children affected, respectively. The clinical definition of adult obesity is operationalized as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2. Although the prevalence of common obesity has increased dramatically over the past 30 years–largely thought to be due to changes in the environment, such as high calorie diets and sedentary lifestyles—twin and family studies have shown consistently that relative body weight is under considerable genetic influence in both children and adults, …

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012

Creative Process Beyond the Studio

In “Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention,” psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi offers the idea that “…creativity does not happen inside people’s heads, but in the interaction between a person’s thoughts and a sociocultural context. It is a systemic rather than an individual phenomenon.”

While it remains natural, for many artists, to focus on their individual part in this creativity equation, creative process can involve, and even invite, influence and participation. Artists may work in teams, or partner with community groups, where they serve as facilitators. Artists may take up the role of instigator, …

There's No Success Like Failure, Haylee L. Ebersole

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012

This panel examines the meaning of failure and it's role in contemporary art practices. Contemporary artists strive to expand and challenge normative thought, and do so through the recognition of failure and the pursuit of the unknown. The artists presented in this panel address these ideas across a variety of mediums, utilizing traditional forms of drawing, printmaking, and ceramics in combination with new media, performance, and video.

Intimate Distance: Negotiating The Urban/Suburban Divide, Whitney L. Sage Oct 2012

Intimate Distance: Negotiating The Urban/Suburban Divide, Whitney L. Sage

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

As a native of Farmington Hills, a suburb thirty minutes outside of Detroit, I have always had a peculiar relationship with the city. As a child I visited Detroit often for family outings to the DIA and Tiger Stadium. Hours later we would be driving on I-96 returning west. All of my early memories of Detroit are happy and warm, however they are seen through the rose-colored glass of wide cultural and geographic separation from the city. In this way, my artwork, which discusses Detroit’s past and present through literal representation, radiates nostalgia and expresses both a sense of intimacy …

Is Competition Always Good?, Maurice Stucke Oct 2012

Is Competition Always Good?, Maurice Stucke

Scholarly Works

Competition is the backbone of U.S. economic policy. The U.S. Supreme Court observed, “The heart of our national economic policy long has been faith in the value of competition.” Competition advocacy is also thriving internationally. Promoting competition is broadly accepted as the best available tool for promoting consumer well-being. Competition officials, who regularly try to protect the public from anticompetitive special interest legislation, are justifiably jaded about complaints of excess competition. Although the economic crisis has prompted some policymakers to reconsider basic assumptions, the virtues of competition are not among them.

Nonetheless to effectively advocate competition, officials must understand when …
