Sequencing The Cortical Processing Of Pitch-Evoking Stimuli Using Eeg Analysis And Source Estimation, Blake E. Butler, Laurel J. Trainor Oct 2012

Sequencing The Cortical Processing Of Pitch-Evoking Stimuli Using Eeg Analysis And Source Estimation, Blake E. Butler, Laurel J. Trainor

Paediatrics Publications

Cues to pitch include spectral cues that arise from tonotopic organization and temporal cues that arise from firing patterns of auditory neurons. fMRI studies suggest a common pitch center is located just beyond primary auditory cortex along the lateral aspect of Heschl's gyrus, but little work has examined the stages of processing for the integration of pitch cues. Using electroencephalography, we recorded cortical responses to high-pass filtered iterated rippled noise (IRN) and high-pass filtered complex harmonic stimuli, which differ in temporal and spectral content. The two stimulus types were matched for pitch saliency, and a mismatch negativity (MMN) response was …

A Comparison Study On Teacher-Centered And Inquiry-Based Instruction In Science Education Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities: What Is Effective?, Jessica Yorke-Servis

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of the study are to examine the effects of inquiry-based and teacher-centered instruction methods when teaching science for middle school students with learning disabilities. These two instructional methods were provided to 81 students in two middle schools located in southern New Jersey. Of those, 30 students with learning disabilities, 15 in each school participated in the study. Both groups were given a pre and post test prior to and after the three weeks of science instruction to evaluate student performance. In addition, a student and teacher survey was provided to examine their satisfaction. The results show that students …

Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Neighborhood Disadvantage And Adolescent Substance Use, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright, Gillian M. Pinchevsky Oct 2012

Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Neighborhood Disadvantage And Adolescent Substance Use, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright, Gillian M. Pinchevsky

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Although social disorganization theory hypothesizes that neighborhood characteristics influence youth delinquency, the impact of neighborhood disadvantage on adolescent substance use and racial/ethnic differences in this relationship have not been widely investigated. The present study examines these issues using longitudinal data from 1,856 African American, Hispanic, and Caucasian adolescents participating in the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN). The results indicated that neighborhood disadvantage did not significantly increase the likelihood of substance use for the full sample. When relationships were analyzed by race/ethnicity, one significant (p ≤ .10) effect was found; disadvantage increased alcohol use among African Americans …

Exploring The Effects Of Managerial Ownership On The Decision To Go Private: A Behavioral Agency Model Approach, Alix Valenti, Marguerite Schneider Oct 2012

Exploring The Effects Of Managerial Ownership On The Decision To Go Private: A Behavioral Agency Model Approach, Alix Valenti, Marguerite Schneider

Administrative Issues Journal

This paper utilizes the behavioral agency model to investigate why many formerly public companies have been converted to privately held corporations. Using a matched pairs sample and categorical binary regression, and controlling for effects found in previous studies, we explore how the equity ownership of those entrusted to manage firms, the firms’ executives, might affect their perceptions of the risks of going private and might therefore affect the decision to take a company private. This study complements prior research examining the predictors of public to private transactions and illustrates how behavioral agency theory can provide insight into a major decision …

Head Start: A True Start To Getting Ahead: A Literature Review Of The Head Start Program As A Primary Poverty Prevention Strategy, Laporsche C. Smith Oct 2012

Head Start: A True Start To Getting Ahead: A Literature Review Of The Head Start Program As A Primary Poverty Prevention Strategy, Laporsche C. Smith

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The federal Head Start Program plays a vital role in increasing the likelihood that under-privileged children will become academically successful in school, attend college, and become successful citizens. Yet, Head Start continuously struggles to retain its funding and is challenged in its goal of assisting low income children. A review of the literature on Head Start and related early childhood education longitudinal studies will attest to the importance of this program as a primary prevention strategy to reduce poverty, raise public awareness of its benefits, and support the efforts of its advocates to retain and expand its funding at local …

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Movie Industry's Influence On Its Stigma, Courtney M. Raymond Oct 2012

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Movie Industry's Influence On Its Stigma, Courtney M. Raymond

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) is a concerning behavior disproportionately affecting adolescents today. Rates of NSSI have increased, as have depictions of NSSI in the media. Therefore, some researchers believe that increased media exposure is contributing to increased rates of NSSI. Research has shown that NSSI is a coping mechanism and/or a cry for help among those who display such behaviors. However, studies also show that many adolescents with this behavior do not seek help. This may be because persons engaging in NSSI feel that their behavior, thoughts, or feelings are stigmatized by the general population. The purpose of this study is …

Tyler Perry And The Weight Of Misrepresentation, Briana Mckoy Oct 2012

Tyler Perry And The Weight Of Misrepresentation, Briana Mckoy

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Criticism of black film production often includes discussions of narrow typecasting and stereotypical role portrayal. Previous research shows that consumers of black films attest that such films are an accurate depiction of black culture. However, consequences of negative stereotypes presented in mainstream media are rarely discussed. The purpose of this study is to define and examine the stereotypes of African American women in film. By way of semiotic film content analysis this research will look at the relationship and function between specific historical stereotypes and the behaviors of female characters in Tyler Perry’s most popular films. This research examines role …

Innocent Until Proven Guilty: The Representation Of Wrongfully Convicted Women, Julie Krupa Oct 2012

Innocent Until Proven Guilty: The Representation Of Wrongfully Convicted Women, Julie Krupa

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The Innocence Project has exonerated only four women out of their first 250 cases. Even with the increase in media attention, wrongfully convicted women are still underrepresented among exonerees. This study will examine the four cases of exonerated women with the help of the Innocence Project. First, utilizing official documents including court filings and rulings, the study will identify commonalities and differences that led to a case being chosen by the Innocence Project. Characteristics to be considered are: the crime(s) the individuals were convicted of, the length of sentences, whether DNA testing was used to exonerate them, or if another …

A Literature Review: How Language Parameter Deficits Impact Social Interaction In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders During Middle Childhood, And Intervention Strategies, Carmen Nicole Grange Oct 2012

A Literature Review: How Language Parameter Deficits Impact Social Interaction In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders During Middle Childhood, And Intervention Strategies, Carmen Nicole Grange

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Human growth is dependent upon social interactions, notably essential during the middle childhood years (ages 5-10). Although some children develop differently than others, all experience the same types of mental processes through which, due to a variety of factors, they may become typically achieving, or stunted in their development. Language is a key component of being human. Communication occurs through verbal and nonverbal behavior. People are able to understand what others are trying to encode through multiple processes of interpretation. Humans learn to use language through interaction with others, but are born with the ability to acquire language. Children with …

The Glass Ceiling: Examining The Advancement Of Women In The Domain Of Athletic Administration, Brittany J. Galloway Oct 2012

The Glass Ceiling: Examining The Advancement Of Women In The Domain Of Athletic Administration, Brittany J. Galloway

McNair Scholars Research Journal

The “glass ceiling” is a metaphor for examining gender disparities between men and women within the workplace. Such disparities are particularly visible in athletic administration. This literature review evaluates specific leadership characteristics and their relationship to gender stereotyping in Sport Management. Because athletic administration is a male dominated domain, there appears to be discrimination against women, creating a gender gap that prevents the advancement of women into top-level managerial positions.
