Research outputs 2012
Background: Older adults free of dementia but with subjective memory complaints (SMC) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are considered at increased risk of cognitive decline. Vascular risk factors (VRF), including hypertension, heart disease, smoking, hypercholesterolemia and lack of physical activity (PA) have been identified as modifiable risk factors contributing to cognitive decline, and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) are associated with VRF, SMC and cognitive impairment. Findings from a growing number of clinical trials with older adults are providing strong evidence for the benefits of physical activity for maintaining cognitive function, but few studies are investigating these benefits in high-risk populations. …

Nebraska’S Strategic Plan For Victims And Survivors Of Crime 2015 - 2020, Anne M. Hobbs, Lindsey Wylie, Sommer Fousek
Reports
The goal of Nebraska’s 2015 – 2020 Strategic Plan for Victims and Survivors of Crime (NSPVSC) is to provide recommendations to permanently improve and enhance services available to all victims of crime in Nebraska. The University of Nebraska Omaha, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice Institute began the comprehensive planning process in March 2015. In the nine months that followed, we received input from many individuals and agencies serving victims of crime in the state of Nebraska. To collect feedback, we held focus groups, attended individual meetings, surveyed agencies, surveyed victims, spoke on the phone with advocates, and …

Sleep Disturbance Implications For Modern Military Operations, Douglas R. Lindsay, Jeff Dyche
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
As is evident from current military operations that are happening around the globe (e.g., Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea), today’s military is being called on in numerous new and innovative ways (e.g., Foster & Lindsay, 2011). One of the primary forces behind this change is the pervasiveness of enhanced information systems. In fact, the concept of networked warfare is the basis of operations and doctrine for the armed forces (Wesensten, Belenky, & Balkin, 2005). With respect to Admiral Cebrowski’s quote, it appears that this notion of information in warfare is going to continue to influence the way that we approach and conduct …

Investigating Visual Alerting In Complex Command And Control Environments, Jacquelyn M. Crebolder
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
A series of experiments was conducted to investigate visual alerting in complex command and control environments, where operators must use several displays to perform tasks. In the first experiment, the speed of detection of two alerts, one in the form of a short bar and the other a border surrounding the perimeter of the display, were compared under flashing and static states. Findings showed that bar alerts were detected faster than border alerts and that adding a flashing attribute did not provide a benefit. The second study monitored which display participants were attending to when the alert appeared, and the …

Impact Of Climate Change On Human Livelihood And Agricultural Growth In Himalayan Country Nepal, Shankar Prasad Acharya
Impact Of Climate Change On Human Livelihood And Agricultural Growth In Himalayan Country Nepal, Shankar Prasad Acharya
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
Present-day concerns continue to grow about the adverse impacts on human life of climate change, which includes issues such as increased food insecurities. Climate change has many impacts on the overall ecosystem, directly and indirectly, however its impact on agriculture can be understood to be more direct as it is particularly vulnerable to these changes. Concern about climate change in Nepal may be particularly acute as the result of the observed early symptom of rapidly increasing average temperatures. Partly as a result of these temperature changes, Nepal has recently become a rice importer, where it was an exporter previously. Nepal …

Living On The Edge: Exclusion Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender And Intersex (Lgbti) Population In Nepal, Sadixya Bista
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
Despite of all the achievements progress remains tenuous and LGBTI persons are often stigmatized for revealing identity and are barred from various life enhancing opportunities. Thus, they are socially, politically and economically backward and their access to available life opportunity is very limited. Thus, this paper has made an effort to explore a) their social relationship (individual and institutional level), b) their access over formal education and employment, and c) the repercussion of exclusion and discrimination on LGBTI persons.

A Macro Sketch Of Users’ Needs, Satisfaction, And Library Performance: A Survey Of University Libraries In Pakistan, Farzana Shafique, Shafiq Ur Rehman, Khalid Mahmood
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This is a survey of large public sector university libraries of the Punjab Province and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) of Pakistan. The basic purpose is to get a broader understanding of users’ perceptions about the library services. The survey is based on a questionnaire containing both open and close ended questions. The data were collected through mail, e-mail and personal visits. The study reveals that although respondents have shown their overall satisfaction with the library services, but the analysis of the data about users’ satisfaction with major library services shows that they were not fully satisfied with their respective library …
