Self-Regulation Of A Chiropractic Association Through Participatory Action Research, Lorraine A. Sheppard, Anna Maria S. Jorgensen, Michael J. Crowe
Self-Regulation Of A Chiropractic Association Through Participatory Action Research, Lorraine A. Sheppard, Anna Maria S. Jorgensen, Michael J. Crowe
The Qualitative Report
Participatory action research (PAR) can be used in the health professions to redefine their roles. This study investigated a small health professional group, the members of The Chiropractic Association Singapore (TCAS), by using a PAR method; researchers and participants gained insights into the self-regulation of a health profession. A qualitative process using a theory-building approach and an action component was a practical way of developing self-regulation in a small professional group. This approach bridged the gap between practice and research with TCAS members fully engaged in the process of being critically reflective of their future roles in the local health …

Homeless High School Students In America: Who Counts?, John M. Cumming, Gene W. Gloeckner
Homeless High School Students In America: Who Counts?, John M. Cumming, Gene W. Gloeckner
Administrative Issues Journal
After interviewing homeless high school students, the research team in a Colorado school district discovered that many students had not revealed their true living conditions (homelessness) to anyone in the school district. This research team developed an anonymous survey written around the homeless categories identified in the McKinney-Vento federal legislation. Results revealed students who identified as homeless for a portion of their high school years in numbers and percentages alarmingly higher than the district had on file. In fact, over 25 times as many homeless students were identified by this process than by the previously-used district system for identifying homelessness. …
What’S Right About The Medical Model In Human Subjects Research Regulation, Heidi Li Feldman
What’S Right About The Medical Model In Human Subjects Research Regulation, Heidi Li Feldman
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Critics of Institutional Review Board (IRB) practices often base their charges on the claim that IRB review began with and is premised upon a "medical model" of research, and hence a "medical model" of risk. Based on this claim, they charge that IRB review, especially in the social and behavioral sciences, has experienced "mission creep". This paper argues that this line of critique is fundamentally misguided. While it remains unclear what critics mean by "medical model", the point of contemporary human research subjects regulation remains the same across all domains of research. That point is to protect the autonomy of …

Priming Locus Of Control To Affect Performance, Alvitta Ottley, R. Jordan Crouser, Caroline Ziemkiewicz, Remco Chang
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Recent research suggests that the personality trait Locus of Control (LOC) can be a reliable predictor of performance when learn- ing a new visualization tool. While these results are compelling and have direct implications to visualization design, the relation- ship between a user’s LOC measure and their performance is not well understood. We hypothesize that there is a dependent relation- ship between LOC and performance; specifically, a person’s orientation on the LOC scale directly influences their performance when learning new visualizations. To test this hypothesis, we conduct an experiment with 300 subjects using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. We adapt techniques from …
Teacher Professionalism And Team Performance Pay: A Mixed Methods Study, Pamela Wells, Julie P. Combs, Rebecca M. Bustamante
Teacher Professionalism And Team Performance Pay: A Mixed Methods Study, Pamela Wells, Julie P. Combs, Rebecca M. Bustamante
Administrative Issues Journal
The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of their professional behaviors when they worked in schools that awarded team performance pay. Teachers’ archival responses from two questionnaires were analyzed using mixed methods data analysis techniques (Year 1, n = 368; Year 2, n = 649). Most teachers had positive views of the team performance pay system. Lack of collaboration has been a criticism of some individual performance pay systems; however, teachers in this study believed that the team performance pay encouraged collaboration and attendance at staff development. Findings were interpreted using the framework of …

“The Lingha Boys Of Siem Reap” A Baseline Study Of Sexually-Exploited Young Men In Siem Reap, Cambodia, Jarrett Davis, Glenn Miles
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 4th (2012)
Young women working as masseurs (with additional sexual services) is very common and visible in Cambodia but there are increasingly more masseur places available for both local and foreign men which also provide sexual services. Most of the research being conducted with entertainment workers has a focus on HIV but this research provides a broader understanding of their other needs and vulnerabilities. In this session as well as presenting the research findings we will consider what can be done to reach out to this hidden community to reduce their vulnerability to exploitation.

The Impact Of Covariance Misspecification In Multivariate Gaussian Mixtures On Estimation And Inference: An Application To Longitudinal Modeling, Brianna C. Heggeseth, Nicholas P. Jewell
The Impact Of Covariance Misspecification In Multivariate Gaussian Mixtures On Estimation And Inference: An Application To Longitudinal Modeling, Brianna C. Heggeseth, Nicholas P. Jewell
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Multivariate Gaussian mixtures are a class of models that provide a flexible parametric approach for the representation of heterogeneous multivariate outcomes. When the outcome is a vector of repeated measurements taken on the same subject, there is often inherent dependence between observations. However, a common covariance assumption is conditional independence---that is, given the mixture component label, the outcomes for subjects are independent. In this paper, we study, through asymptotic bias calculations and simulation, the impact of covariance misspecification in multivariate Gaussian mixtures. Although maximum likelihood estimators of regression and mixing probability parameters are not consistent under misspecification, they have little …

Abstract
Blood, organs and other tissues for sale: Diamela Eltit's Impuesto a la carne and the afterwards of the neoliberal development in Latin America.
As Marx elaborated in Capital: Volume I at the moment human labour is sold, the subject participates in an ominous plot where she/he becomes a commodity. In a capitalist mode of production, the subject’s alienation from his/her humanity occurs because the individuals can only express labor through a privately-owned system of production in which he/she is an instrument, an object. This dehumanization process submits the subject under the exchange transactions of the market, where labor value …
Effectively Measuring Student Leadership, Barry Z. Posner
Effectively Measuring Student Leadership, Barry Z. Posner
Management & Entrepreneurship
With a worldwide sample of students (N = 77, 387), this paper reviews and analyses the psychometric properties of the Student Leadership Practices Inventory [1]. Modest to strong internal reliability coefficients are found across a number of different dimensions. Predictive validity of the instrument is supported, with the instrument being able to differentiate between effective and ineffective leaders using both self-reported and observer (constituent) data. Few significant differences are found on the basis of respondent gender, ethnicity, nationality, or institutional level (high school versus college). Implications for developing student leaders and future research are offered.

Monosynaptic Functional Connectivity In Cerebral Cortex During Wakefulness And Under Graded Levels Of Anesthesia, Jeannette A. Vizuete, Siveshigan Pillay, Kamran Diba, Kristina M. Ropella, Anthony G. Hudetz
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The balance between excitation and inhibition is considered to be of significant importance for neural computation and cognitive function. Excitatory and inhibitory functional connectivity in intact cortical neuronal networks in wakefulness and graded levels of anesthesia has not been systematically investigated. We compared monosynaptic excitatory and inhibitory spike transmission probabilities using pairwise cross-correlogram (CCG) analysis. Spikes were measured at 64 sites in the visual cortex of rats with chronically implanted microelectrode arrays during wakefulness and three levels of anesthesia produced by desflurane. Anesthesia decreased the number of active units, the number of functional connections, and the strength of excitatory connections. …
