Social Capital And Business Incubators Performance: Testing The Structural Model, Renata Valentina Adlešič, Alenka Slavec
Social Capital And Business Incubators Performance: Testing The Structural Model, Renata Valentina Adlešič, Alenka Slavec
Economic and Business Review
Social capital is considered as an important factor of innovativeness, organizational advantage and value creation. Although social capital has been widely studied in general, there is a lack of research investigating the role of social capital in relation to business incubators. Additionally, the literature still misses an alternative intangible view of incubators’ performance viewed from the perspective of the incubatees. Thus, this study contributes an insight into the social capital and networking exploitation of firms in incubators and evaluates the performance of incubators from the perspective of their incubatees. In specific, we investigate how do social network size, role models, …
Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Health Care Administration Student Practicum, Christopher R. Cochran, Michelle Sotero
Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Health Care Administration Student Practicum, Christopher R. Cochran, Michelle Sotero
Nevada Journal of Public Health
As the health care industry becomes increasingly complex, many leaders and practitioners in the field are worried about the quality and preparation of health care administration graduates (Robbins, Bradley, & Spicer, 2001). Academic health care administration programs prepare students for a professional career in the health care field. One of the biggest challenges for university health care administration programs is to meet industry needs by effectively incorporating practical skills and knowledge into the academic curricula. For students, coursework provides some insight into the demands of the industry, but they also require hands-on experience to be relevant in a highly competitive …
Did Dewey Presage The 1989 National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards?, Teresa M. Finken
Did Dewey Presage The 1989 National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards?, Teresa M. Finken
Education and Culture
The general theme of change in philosophy over time is due to traditional customs and beliefs failing to regulate society. This theme drove both John Dewey's Progressive Movement and the creation of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The remarkable similarity in thought between Dewey's writings and the Standards is the basis for this paper. The point of view is from the Standards looking back to find Dewey's similar ideas. Although Dewey's views of mathematics per se are not extensively explicated, his overarching views on learning content resonate …

Authority, Social Change, And Education: A Response To Dewey's Critics, James Scott Johnston
Authority, Social Change, And Education: A Response To Dewey's Critics, James Scott Johnston
Education and Culture
In this paper, I want to examine and challenge certain criticisms of Dewey's conception of authority. These criticisms are, broadly speaking, of two species. The first set of criticisms involves what critics have labeled Dewey's "strong" authority. These critics, the so-called "Illinois Revisionists," argue that embedded in Dewey's social and educational philosophy are assumptions about authority that lead the critics to speculate that the legitimation of authority is predicated upon an expert, professional class. This class maintains power and social control through the use of scientific, technical, and rational means. In terms of education, these critics conclude that schooling is …
A Deweyan Perspective On Communication, Cooperation, And Collaboration Between Elementary And Secondary Educators, Pamela Ames Coke
A Deweyan Perspective On Communication, Cooperation, And Collaboration Between Elementary And Secondary Educators, Pamela Ames Coke
Education and Culture
In the field of education, the belief is often expressed among educators and non-educators alike that "elementary teachers teach kids; secondary teachers teach subject matter." This sets up an unspoken dichotomy that elementary teachers do not teach subject matter and that secondary teachers do not teach kids. This presents a problem situation. At the heart of this problem situation is the fact that elementary and secondary educators have little, if any, contact with one another within the public school setting. As a result, one has no idea what the other is doing, and this serves to further perpetuate stereotypes. Communication …
Making Classrooms Culturally Sensitive, Robert C. Morris, Nancy G. Mims
Making Classrooms Culturally Sensitive, Robert C. Morris, Nancy G. Mims
Education and Culture
It is felt by many that as American schools and educators become more and more sensitive to the diversity of their community, their students can be guided to appreciate and respect these differences and to coexist peacefully. Various combinations of cultures such as African-Americans, Irish and German-Americans, Hispanics, Chinese-Americans to name a few, are learning how to work and live together while maintaining their own cultural heritage. The students of today who embrace their cultural heritage are trying to keep the values of their parents and grandparents, and still fit in with the students and cultures surrounding them. This dual …

A Federally Supported Educational Reform Program: Individually Guided Education, 1964-1979, Pyeong-Gook Kim
Education and Culture
For over a century and a half, Americans have sought to reform the public schools as a way of improving not just education but society. They have translated their cultural anxieties and hopes into dramatic demands for educational reform. Individually Guided Education (IGE) was one of these educational reform efforts which extended over a period of fifteen years, beginning in 1964. IGE was conceptualized as a comprehensive alternative system of schooling designed to produce higher educational achievements by providing effectively for differences among students in rate of learning, learning style, and other characteristics (Klausmeier, 1972, p. 48). IGE, combining progressive …
Historiographic Perspectives Of Context And Progress During A Half Century Of Progressive Educational Reform, Ellen Durrigan Santora
Historiographic Perspectives Of Context And Progress During A Half Century Of Progressive Educational Reform, Ellen Durrigan Santora
Education and Culture
In many ways, the historiography of progressive education parallels American historiography as well as the historiography of education. This comes as no surprise when we realize the American Historical Association (AHA) has played a major role in the professional foundations of both. While early twentieth century historians emphasized national unity, homogeneity, and the importance of America's destiny, historians of education, mostly educators, produced inspiring histories that sought to ennoble the new profession of teaching. However academic arguments of relevance, presentism, and utility came to haunt both historical traditions. Academic historians debated the value of presentism while, educators debated the relative …
What Ever Happened To The Arts, And Is Education Next?, Marsha L. Heck
What Ever Happened To The Arts, And Is Education Next?, Marsha L. Heck
Education and Culture
This essay challenges a paradigm which views the arts as education's overlooked and unappreciated sibling, with the voices of both historical and contemporary arts advocates. It will propose ways in which educators might again embrace a more holistic educational paradigm which allows the unknown, unpredictable, messy, and challenging processes and products visual arts actualize. Finally, in-progress research will suggest that educator-preparation programs must model arts-infused curricula and pedagogical practices not only for the reasons addressed in this text, but also to empower systemic transformation in K-higher education.
Examining Loss Of Soul In Education, Thomas Peterson
Examining Loss Of Soul In Education, Thomas Peterson
Education and Culture
One does not have to walk long in the hallways of schools to see that something is very wrong. We search in our students for the passion and enthusiasm for learning that they possessed before entering school. Instead, we find idle bystanders content to remain distant from formal instruction and from their hearts. Too often they remain dazed, passive consumers window shopping the mall of education. Education becomes something to get through with a grade or a degree rather than a clearing for deep experience. A common malady of education today is the familiar emptiness found in the experiences of …
Creative Democracy And Teacher Education: The Task Before Us, Mark Lacelle-Peterson, Phillip J. Vanfossen
Creative Democracy And Teacher Education: The Task Before Us, Mark Lacelle-Peterson, Phillip J. Vanfossen
Education and Culture
This essay is organized around three issues. First, through a comparison of the current social situation with that of the 1930's and early 1940's, we show why we believe that, current apparent economic prosperity notwithstanding, the 'creative imperative' of democracy must be re-asserted to counter clear and evident threats to democracy. Second, drawing on 'Creative Democracy,' we outline a vision of democratic individualism that focuses on personal beliefs and characteristics that are, we argue, 'teachable' in the sense that teachers and teacher educators can—and should—view them as requisite outcomes of their educational endeavors. Finally, we draw out implications for teacher …
Red Alert! The National Education Association Confronts The "Red Scare" In American Public Schools, 1947-1954, Stuart J. Foster
Red Alert! The National Education Association Confronts The "Red Scare" In American Public Schools, 1947-1954, Stuart J. Foster
Education and Culture
Typically referred to as the "red scare" or "McCarthy" era, the period from 1947 to 1954 was characterized by an ideological conflict which consumed all aspects of American culture. As prominent historians have argued, a salient feature of the time was the reflexive tendency of many individuals, organizations, and institutions to embrace the prevailing Zeitgeist that a serious internal threat to the United States existed. As a result, American society was propelled into a period of fervent anti-communism which produced one of the most severe episodes of political repression the United States has ever experienced. Public education was not exempt …
Towards A Flexible Curriculum: John Dewey's Theory Of Experience And Learning, Joop W. A. Berding
Towards A Flexible Curriculum: John Dewey's Theory Of Experience And Learning, Joop W. A. Berding
Education and Culture
Positively stated, a reconceptualization of curriculum will most certainly have to take its cue from the American philosopher and pedagogue John Dewey (1859-1952). His work in philosophy and education is one great attempt to overcome dysfunctional dualisms like between the child and the curriculum, freedom and discipline, the individual and the society, body and mind. I will use my reconstruction of his theory of experience and learning to challenge the claim made by the Tanners (Tanner and Tanner, 1980, 1988; D. Tanner, 1982; L.N. Tanner, 1982) that Dewey must be regarded as the ancestor of 'modern' curriculum theory as formulated …
Translating Studies Across Cultures, Carol Korn-Bursztyn
Translating Studies Across Cultures, Carol Korn-Bursztyn
Education and Culture
The stories that a culture tells are intimately connected to what Dewey referred to as "life as it is ordinarily lived" (1934), or as it once was. Works of art, Dewey noted, lost their connection to ordinary life and became, instead, specimens of fine art rather than artifacts connected to the daily lives of people. Art and artistic activity have consequently grown increasingly split off from communal life, rather than anchored within the culture. Folktales, steeped as they are within a particular culture, are repositories of cultural beliefs and traditions, and may be psychologically distant for the culturally different audience. …
Vygotsky And Marxism, Danling Fu
Vygotsky And Marxism, Danling Fu
Education and Culture
To cut off Vygotsky from Marx is to look at him fragmentally and to separate his work from its theoretical basis. The very act is anti-dialectical materialism, the fundamental principle guiding Vygotsky's research and shaping his analysis. A discussion of Vygotsky in the context of Marxism will help us reach an understanding of the theoretic framework of Vygotsky's thinking. This understanding will lead us to a more profound interpretation of Vygotsky's theory and approach. Hopefully this discussion will also help readers understand Marxist theory and methodology in some way. In this article, based on two of Vygotsky's most known works …

Alice Miel And Democratic Schooling: An Early Curriculum Leader's Ideas On Social Learning And Social Studies, Elizabeth Anne Yeager
Alice Miel And Democratic Schooling: An Early Curriculum Leader's Ideas On Social Learning And Social Studies, Elizabeth Anne Yeager
Education and Culture
Alice Miel, a nationally prominent curriculum development scholar-practitioner at Teachers College of Columbia University for some three decades (1942-1971), frequently has been overlooked in research on the nature and evolution of the curriculum field and the progressive education movement. Furthermore, her contributions have been overlooked even as attention to women in the curriculum field and in educational history has risen. This study addresses this oversight.
Miel became a leading figure in the curriculum field largely on the basis of her progressive-era advocacy and practice of democratic social learning as a primary goal of schooling in the United States. This study …

Leta Stetter Hollingworth And The Speyer School, 1935-1940: Historical Roots Of The Contradictions In Progressive Education For Gifted Children, Rose A. Rutnitski
Education and Culture
Leta Stetter Hollingworth, a pioneer of gifted education in America, embodies the dichotomy between the ideals of progressive education and the measurement movement prevalent at the beginning of this century, the movement most closely associated with the identification of gifted and talented students. The Speyer School experiment illustrated how the measurement paradigm could dominate a very democratic model of elementary education for exceptional children. There are vestiges of the strictly "objective" measurement paradigm in the identification of students for gifted programs today, juxtaposed with a very democratic paradigm in curriculum and teaching in those same programs. This article briefly documents …

Combining Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment And A Commercial Program: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Joseph L. Fava, Debra A. Hoffmann, Rena R. Wing
Publications and Research
Commercial weight loss programs such as Weight Watchers (WW) offer widely recognized and accessible treatment, but typically produce weight losses that are modest relative to professionally delivered programs. This study tested the hypothesis that a novel weight loss approach that combined the fundamental components of professionally delivered behavioral weight loss (BWL) treatment with the existing WW program would produce better weight losses than WW alone; no differences were expected between the novel treatment and BWL alone. Participants were 141 overweight and obese adults (90% women, 67% non-White, mean age = 49.7 ± 9.2 years, mean BMI = 36.2 ± 5.5 …

This thesis explores solutions to the problem young adults face when relocating on a budget. The target age range of 20 to 30 year-olds face multiple hurdles when it comes to their nomadic existence. On average this age group relocates once per year; they are a consumerist population often defining themselves by their possessions; and are often under tight budget constraints. Since nomadic cultures to the current day, relocation has allowed individuals access to better things and the essentials of life. The difference being that nomadic cultures had fewer possessions which were designed for easy packing and carrying, where as …

This study examined whether rapid temporal auditory processing, verbal working memory capacity, non-verbal intelligence, executive functioning, musical ability and prior foreign language experience predicted how well native English speakers (N = 120) discriminated Norwegian tonal and vowel contrasts as well as a non-speech analogue of the tonal contrast and a native vowel contrast presented over noise. Results confirmed a male advantage for temporal and tonal processing, and also revealed that temporal processing was associated with both non-verbal intelligence and speech processing. In contrast, effects of musical ability on non-native speech-sound processing and of inhibitory control on vowel discrimination were not …

Inspiration: Examining Its Emotional Correlates And Relationship To Internalized Values, David Jennings Ii
Theses and Dissertations
The study of inspiration as a psychological construct has received little empirical attention to date. In the present dissertation, I review the empirical literature on inspiration and present a theoretical model and definition of inspiration. In two studies, I tested a Value-Congruent Model of Inspiration and my proposed definition. In Study 1 (N = 134), I explored inspiration’s emotional correlates and tested whether individuals experience greater inspiration if the inspirational content is concordant with individual meaning and values. As predicted, state inspiration was positively related to state levels of admiration, awe, and elevation, and value-congruent stimuli significantly predicted self-reported experiences …
