The Evf Model: A Novel Framework For Understanding Gambling And, By Extension, Poker, Arthur S. Reber

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

There are several senses in which the term gambling is used. All have liabilities, problems that have muddied the waters in scientific research, generated conflicting legal decisions, compromised debates over ethical and moral issues, and have led to uneven legislation. Here, a novel framework for the term is offered, based on two continuous variables: a) the Expected Value (EV) of any arbitrary game and, b) the inherent Flexibility (F) of that game. This EVF model produces a classification system for all the enterprises that can or have been called gambling. It is one that allows for more measured decisions to …

Autobiography As A Politics Of Metissage: A Pedagogy Of Encounter, Mark Zuss Nov 2012

Autobiography As A Politics Of Metissage: A Pedagogy Of Encounter, Mark Zuss

Education and Culture

My intent here is to indicate the potential life writing strategies represent in assaying specific constellations of contemporary subjectivity. Indications of how experiences are gathered and named through specific socialization in particular discourse communities emerge in productive abundance within life writing practices. The particularities of place, gender, ethnic, racial and national affinities are woven into expressive texts that often afford a sense of the contingency and complexity of what otherwise could be essentialized and reduced to demographic and socioeconomic ascriptions of identity.

Authority, Authoritarianism, And Education, Bruce Romanish Nov 2012

Authority, Authoritarianism, And Education, Bruce Romanish

Education and Culture

The achievement of political freedom in a democratic system results from the conscious plans and actions of a human community. Once political freedom is identified as an aim, the true task inheres in developing social structures and institutional frameworks which create, nurture, and sustain that end. These structures and frameworks themselves are in need of care and support if the democracy they nourish is not to wither and atrophy from neglect. Yet desiring political freedom, accomplishing it, and maintaining it do not come with instructions. Modern history provides many examples of societies that lost their way and slipped into the …

Migrant Hispanic Families Of Young Children: An Analysis Of Parent Needs And Family Support, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Vivian I. Correa, Cheryl L. Beverly

Education and Culture

The population served by early interventionists has changed to include more migrant families. Although there has been much research concerning Caucasian families, less is known about culturally and linguistically diverse families. Forming partnerships with families can be aided by understanding how to identify families' needs and support networks. The purpose of this study was to assess the group differences between Hispanic migrant families of young children with and without disabilities (ages birth - 5) regarding their perceptions of needs and use of support systems. The findings indicate that there is little difference between migrant families of young children with and …

Cultural Obstacles On The Road To Rural Educational Renewal, Paul Theobald, Ann Alsmeyer Nov 2012

Cultural Obstacles On The Road To Rural Educational Renewal, Paul Theobald, Ann Alsmeyer

Education and Culture

While many rural communities consider themselves a part of something other than an agriculturally-oriented economy, most are nevertheless deeply affected by agricultural policy and practice. Other long-standing rural occupa-tions, such as logging, mining, and fishing, share with agriculture the finite nature of the resource base involved. Historically, this circumstance led to the development of resource stewardship in rural communities and to the resulting evolution of cultural practices tending to sustain the extractive nature of these occupations. In this regard, all of these types of communities are similar. They are similar, too, in that during this century, all have witnessed the …

A Study To Determine If University Athletic Teams In Desert Environments Experience Risky Diet-Related Behaviours, Susan Meacham, Christine Bergman, Marcia M. Ditmyer, Kyle Wilson, Connie Mobley

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Training and competing in desert environments may exacerbate concerns related to disordered eating, supplement use, and hydration in some student athlete populations. A survey administered equitably to both genders solicited self-reported responses from members of 18 different teams over four years from a southwestern United States university athletic program. More than 1,700 athletes responded to 42 items on the questionnaire. Teams, not individual student athletes, were the units of measure for statistical analyses. Initial analysis of results indicated that there were no overt concerns regarding dietary behaviors due to training and competing in the desert environment. Further analysis subjected the …

The Cardinal Principles Report Revisited, William G. Wraga Nov 2012

The Cardinal Principles Report Revisited, William G. Wraga

Education and Culture

Scholars looking back on the impact of the Cardinal Principles (Commission 1918a) report generally agree that the comprehensive high school model was widely adopted in the United States in so far as the scope of secondary course offerings was broadened to serve a wider portion of the age cohort than had historically been the case. It is at this point, however, where scholarly agreement about this historic document seems to end. Curriculum historians such as Tanner and Tanner (1990) and Kliebard (1992) recommend a periodic revisiting of the original texts of foundational documents of the curriculum filed. A review of …

An Approach For Integration Of Sustainable Transport Planning Indicators, Ylber Limani, Binak Beqaj

UBT International Conference

This paper describes the factors that need to be considered when selecting indicators for sustainable transport planning, principles for selecting indicators, and represents an indicator integration methodology. Indicators are very important components for various assessments due to proper decision making, and the end results depend on the accuracy of selecting, integrating and measuring them. The sensitivity ratio between decision makers and planners concerning sustainable transport planning indicators selection and application is not at a desired level and it needs to be improved. This may be as a result of lack of sufficient methodologies for making indicators more practical and understandable …
