Does Player Performance Increase During The Postseason? A Look At Professional Basketball, Jordan Weiss
Does Player Performance Increase During The Postseason? A Look At Professional Basketball, Jordan Weiss
Undergraduate Economic Review
This study examines the game logs of professional basketball players to determine whether they exhibit elevated performance during the postseason. In a survey of 10 players who were awarded the Most Valuable Player Award during the NBA Finals for the seasons 2001-02 thru 2010- 11, performance was found to be stable throughout the entire season. Implications for why player performance remains stable and why it believed that player performance increases during the postseason are discussed.

The Art Of Regenerative Leadership: Language, Spirit, And Principles, Judith A. Sturnick
Education and Culture
What are the arenas where leadership and culture can be revitalized? In my own history of three university and college presidencies (public and private, traditional and non traditional), a stint in Washington, DC, as Vice President and Director of the Office of Women in Higher Education at the American Council on Education, the establishment of my own international business in executive leadership coaching and consulting, my work as a writer and teacher of leadership theory (including leadership and gender), and my experiences facilitating leadership training for developing nations under the auspices of the United Nations, I have consciously struggled with …
The Application Of John Dewey's Ideas To An Inner City Alternative High School, Meryl Domina, Janice Greer
The Application Of John Dewey's Ideas To An Inner City Alternative High School, Meryl Domina, Janice Greer
Education and Culture
The idea for this paper grew out of a comment Laurel N. Tanner made in her book Dewey's Laboratory School: Lessons for Today. Tanner wrote that it isn't enough to read Dewey as his "ideas are not developed fully enough in these major works to serve as guides to practice" (1997, p. xii). She researched the early records of the Laboratory School and brought the workings of Dewey's school to life, showing the "everyday operation" underlying Dewey's principles. In this paper I am going to show how Sullivan House applies Dewey's principles to a contemporary alternative high school serving …
John Dewey's 1937 Lectures In Philosophy And Education, J. J. Chambliss
John Dewey's 1937 Lectures In Philosophy And Education, J. J. Chambliss
Education and Culture
John Dewey's most intense period of work in philosophy of education during and immediately after the Chicago years culminated in Democracy and Education in 1916. After that, he produced fewer writings on education, but is still remembered for The Sources of a Science of Education, Experience and Education, and numerous articles in journals. Yet the longest account of philosophy of education after Democracy and Education is little known. This is a course of lectures on educational philosophy given at the University of Cincinnati in 1937, two decades after Democracy and Education. A stenographic record of the lectures …
John Dewey's View Of The Curriculum In The Child And The Curriculum, Douglas J. Simpson, Michael J. B. Jackson
John Dewey's View Of The Curriculum In The Child And The Curriculum, Douglas J. Simpson, Michael J. B. Jackson
Education and Culture
Today, whether in the name of accountability, higher standards, or economic competitiveness, we risk putting the formal school curriculum ahead of the child—a problem that Dewey addressed in 1902. Advantaged and influential individuals and groups unconsciously surrender the individuality, aspirations, and humanity of the child to privileged interests and voices, and in so doing, they unwittingly give or take away the professional roles and responsibilities of educators. That is, educators are frequently stripped of the freedom to think for themselves, to make professional judgments, and to teach in ways that they consider are in the best interest of children and …
John Dewey's New Humanism And Liberal Education For The 21st Century, Janean Stallman
John Dewey's New Humanism And Liberal Education For The 21st Century, Janean Stallman
Education and Culture
This paper contains excerpts from an unpublished commencement speech given by John Dewey at Illinois College in June of 1917. Buried within the reels of microfilm in the archives of the local public library, two moving paragraphs—all that may exist of the speech—have slept silently for 85 years. Like a time capsule waiting to be opened, Dewey's message to the graduates of 1917 seems to have anticipated the ethical problems and concerns of the modern age. In the spring of 1917, Dewey was speaking to a group of young adults facing a world torn by the horrors of WWI. Today, …
American Principles Of Self-Government, Michael Reber
American Principles Of Self-Government, Michael Reber
Education and Culture
I revisit Thomas Jefferson's Principles of Government and reformulate them into four basic principles for life in the 21st century. Next, I state the conditions necessary for these principles to be fostered within a democratic, republican context, most specifically, Jefferson's Ward Republic. Finally, in reference to Jefferson's thesis that the most important way to secure our liberties is via an educated and self-reliant citizenry, I present a new image of public education for an American Republic.
The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger
The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger
Education and Culture
This paper is an attempt to not only gain a better understanding of the "leftist" ideology in educational research by examining one its most prolific authors, but also to take a hard look at how leftist education literature has "allowed" power-ful conservative (or "rightist") coalitions to set the educational agenda in the United States for the next unforeseeable years.

Album: Graduation Speech, Adult Degree Program, Vermont College, Montpelier, Vermont, June 27, 1993, Martha Vanderwolk
Education and Culture
The following is a graduation address given at the Adult Degree Program of Vermont College by faculty member, Martha VanderWolk. The Adult Degree Program, now located at Vermont College of Union Institute and University, the oldest external degree program for adults in the United States, celebrating its 40th birthday this year [2003], is based in student-centered independent study. At graduations, a faculty member is asked to give the address and students are handed their diplomas by friends or family members who have supported them during their years as a student.
Rorty, Putnam, And The Pragmatist View Of Epistemology And Metaphysics, Teed Rockwell
Rorty, Putnam, And The Pragmatist View Of Epistemology And Metaphysics, Teed Rockwell
Education and Culture
In this paper, I will examine some of the modern debates between pragmatism and so-called "realism," especially those between Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam. My claim is that many of these debates are based on misunderstandings of the pragmatist tradition. If we rely on Dewey's original ideas, rather than Rorty's reinterpretations of Dewey, these problems can be radically transformed, and in many cases dissolved.
John Dewey's Philosophy Of Education Before Democracy And Education, J. J. Chambliss
John Dewey's Philosophy Of Education Before Democracy And Education, J. J. Chambliss
Education and Culture
John Dewey's Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education, was published in 1916. It is still the best-known work in philosophy of education by an American author, and has remained in print down to the present time. Democracy and Education differs from many texts in the philosophy of education in that it was not written merely as a philosophy to be "applied" to education. It was made possible in large part by Dewey's participation in the Laboratory School at the University of Chicago from 1896 to 1904. Dewey's own experience with faculty and students at that …

CGU MFA Theses
My work functions as an act of bearing witness. In it, I process consciousness, memory, narrative and time through the choreographed integration of cerebral representations and bodily movement. Through forms both strange and elegant, I seek to activate a viewer’s memory and consciousness–psychologically and corporeally.

Theses
The goal of this thesis project was to create an object or set of objects that would serve as an interaction point to foster reciprocal learning and perceptual exchange between children and adults. The underlying investigation dealt with the notion that the child's point of view can be quite insightful, but it is often forgotten or overlooked and replaced by a more `reasonable' and rational perspective as we age. The project's final form serves not only as a whimsical, functional set of dishes, but also as a language of anthropomorphic forms.
