The Reintroduction Of Rail-Oriented Communities In The St. Louis Region, Andrew G. Sisk Jan 2012

The Reintroduction Of Rail-Oriented Communities In The St. Louis Region, Andrew G. Sisk

Theses

This thesis will focus on the potential for rail oriented development in the greater St Louis area, and methods to communicate that potential.

From many means of analysis, there is a serious problem with the "modern suburb" form of development. Whether in regards to the suburbs' long-term infrastructure costs, their social and psychological dysfunctions, the diminished resources they depend upon or the new, different tastes for housing, our region needs to find a new model.

The current type of growth has been in effect for over sixty years; only in the last fifteen has it drawn much criticism. Many have …

Coping With Economic Stressors: Religious And Non-Religious Strategies For Managing Psychological Distress, Jonathan Karl Feil Jan 2012

Coping With Economic Stressors: Religious And Non-Religious Strategies For Managing Psychological Distress, Jonathan Karl Feil

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The current economic downturn has increased concerns over job insecurity and the potential negative effects of job insecurity and other economic stressors for individuals. While there is a great deal of research on traditional (non-religious) methods of coping with work stress (e.g., Latack, 1986), there has been little research concerning the impact of religious methods of coping on mitigating the effects of work-related stressors. This is true even though a significant amount of research has demonstrated that religious coping methods are effective at reducing negative effects of a wide variety of stressors. Specifically, the current study looked at the effectiveness …

The Wrong Track, Baby - How Damage To Gay Youth Was Borne This Way: Via Ideologically Bound Law Reviews Publishing "Hopey Changey Stuff', David Gröshöff

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques the use of flawed, ideologically driven legal scholarship in court cases involving LGBTQ+ rights, particularly in the context of adoption and foster parenting. It highlights how such scholarship, often published in law reviews with inadequate peer review, has been used to discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals. The analysis focuses on the work of George Rekers and Paul Cameron, whose research was cited in court cases to argue against LGBTQ+ parenting rights, despite significant methodological flaws and ethical violations. The article underscores the need for rigorous ethical standards and peer review in legal scholarship to prevent the perpetuation of …

Evidence For Practice: Whole-School Strategies To Enhance Students' Social Skills And Reduce Bullying In Schools, Donna Cross (Ed.)

Research outputs 2012

While bullying behaviour is widespread and harmful in schools, research conducted at the Child Health Promotion Research Centre (CHPRC) at Edith Cowan University and elsewhere11 - 31 suggests bullying behaviour can be reduced. The CHPRC research team's ongoing empirical research, conducted since 1999, has focused primarily on what schools can do to effectively prevent and reduce bullying behaviour.

One of the most effective means to reduce bullying among young people is to enhance their social and emotional understandings and competencies, in developmentally appropriate ways throughout their schooling, using a whole-school approach. Friendly Schools Plus addresses the social and emotional learning …

Leading Learning In Australian Tertiary Institutions: Narrative Support For Unit Coordinators, Coral Pepper, Susan Roberts Jan 2012

Leading Learning In Australian Tertiary Institutions: Narrative Support For Unit Coordinators, Coral Pepper, Susan Roberts

Research outputs 2012

This research investigates the experience of unit coordinators across Australia. It builds on an earlier Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) project that examined and clarified the role of unit coordinators as leaders of learning in higher education (UCaLL). In this paper we focus on the first phase of the project that involved crafting narrative accounts from semi-structured interviews describing the lived experiences of participants. We wanted to know how unit coordinators perceive their role as leaders of learning in higher education and whether the support provided to them met their needs. Nine themes were identified among the narrative accounts …

Welcome To The Outback: The Paradoxes Of Living And Teaching In Remote Western Australian Schools, Graeme Lock, Fiona Budgen, Ralph Lunay, Grace Oakley

Research outputs 2012

Teaching in remote schools can prove to be a challenging experience. Twenty three teachers from remote schools, located in Western Australia, were interviewed about their teaching and living experiences in isolated communities. The interview questions were designed to elicit information regarding three areas: demographic information; reasons for applying for a position in an isolated school and living in a remote community; and, professional factors impacting on the respondents. Interviews were conducted during a residential professional development session and involved twenty-three teachers with wide ranging ages and teaching experience. These teachers identified a number of affective factors including what attracted them …

Encouraging Student Access To And Use Of Pastoral Care Services In Schools, Patricia Cardoso, Laura Thomas, Robyn Johnston, Donna Cross

Research outputs 2012

School-based health services (SBHS) including pastoral care can play a pivotal role in addressing adolescent health and wellbeing; including their tobacco and other drug use. To maximise the benefits of these services, they need to be accessible, useful for, and acceptable to students. This formative, qualitative study involved 12 focus groups within nine lower socio-economic Western Australian Government secondary schools. The purpose was to identify student (n = 59) perceptions of the availability and usefulness of SBHS (and other identified caring staff) to reduce students' harm associated with tobacco and other drug use. The findings suggest students were aware of …

Developing And Implementing A Domestic Violence Awareness And Educational Program In Dallas-Fort Worth Korean Church Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Jong Keun Han

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Research has established that Seventh-day Adventist families in the Korean community currently living in the United States of America are experiencing increasing levels of domestic violence. It has become increasingly clear that all is not well in the family unit, a core unit of any church and society. During numerous Korean ministerial association meetings, pastors have in the recent past been expressing their growing frustrations about family quarrels. Quarrels in the family have been seen to lead to violence in the homes of many congregation members. While domestic violence is well-known, yet not much talked about problem among Koreans …

A Comprehensive And Individual Perspective: A New Model For Assessing Missionary Needs In Order To Prevent Burnout, Kyra Schellenberger

Senior Honors Theses

In the last 20-30 years, missionary burnout has become a popular topic in the missionary care and support community. Although much research has been done on the issue, few studies have provided a comprehensive approach to the study and appropriate care of these missionaries. The goal of this research was to present a model that more accurately represented missionary struggles while incorporating past findings on missionary burnout. Four retired missionaries were interviewed about their experiences on the field, and their estimation of the model’s relevancy and helpfulness. Despite similar experiences amongst the participants, the responses further confirmed the individual nature …
