The major goal of this seminar is for us, as Christ-ians, to explore a few of the theologies and political realities in the global south from the perspectives and experiences of global south scholars. A secondary goal is for us followers of Jesus to construct theological and public policy possibilities in conversation with what we are learning.

Exploring The Cultural Origins Of Differences In Time Orientation Between European New Zealanders And Māori, Kevin D. Lo, Carla Houkamau Jan 2012

Exploring The Cultural Origins Of Differences In Time Orientation Between European New Zealanders And Māori, Kevin D. Lo, Carla Houkamau

Organization, Leadership, and Communication

Previous research suggests that time orientation differs as a function of national culture. National cultures often cluster together by region, thus regional generalizations can provide insights on how cultures in a given cluster perceive time. We consider the unique case of bi-cultural New Zealand with two cultures, the European New Zealanders (Pākehā) and the indigenous Māori from historically contrasting temporal clusters: Anglo-American and South Pacific. To demonstrate the ways in which Pākehā and Māori differ in their perspectives on time orientation we take our analysis beyond the basic generalizations based on regional clusters and consider the cultural roots of Māori …

Learning From Clergy Education: Externships Through The Lens Of Formation, Daisy Hurst Floyd, Timothy Floyd, Sarah Gerwig-Moore Jan 2012

Learning From Clergy Education: Externships Through The Lens Of Formation, Daisy Hurst Floyd, Timothy Floyd, Sarah Gerwig-Moore

Articles

Educating Lawyers, the 2007 Carnegie Foundation study of legal education, challenges law schools to become more intentional about educating students for formation of professional identity. Noting that clergy education has focused more on the formative aspects of professional education than have other professional schools, the study suggests that legal educators could learn a great deal from clergy education about teaching for professional identity formation. Taking that suggestion to heart, the authors undertook an examination of clergy education, with a particular focus on the role of field education in students’ personal and professional formation. This article reports on that examination …

It's A Birth Not A Procedure: An Ethnographic Study Of Intrauterine Fetal Death In A Labor And Delivery Unit Of An American Hospital Setting, Catherine Mcleod Griffin Jan 2012

It's A Birth Not A Procedure: An Ethnographic Study Of Intrauterine Fetal Death In A Labor And Delivery Unit Of An American Hospital Setting, Catherine Mcleod Griffin

Wayne State University Dissertations

Life transitions such as birth and death constitute a significant area within anthropological studies of ritual. It is important to investigate how individuals, groups, and communities organize around these events. Birth and death can be considered as rites of passage that mark key life transitions (van Gennep 1909/1960). Thus birth and death related rituals need to be investigated within the social and cultural context of American hospital settings to better understand the social organization of life, death, and personhood. In the American hospital setting, a reproductive loss at any gestational age receives the medical diagnostic label of an intrauterine fetal …

Nurse Beliefs And Other Influencing Variables On Nurses' Intentions And Decisions Regarding, Beverly Jones Jan 2012

Nurse Beliefs And Other Influencing Variables On Nurses' Intentions And Decisions Regarding, Beverly Jones

Wayne State University Dissertations

Despite decades of compelling evidence regarding patient and family interest to be with loved ones or the lack of detrimental effects from being together, some nurses are not convinced of the merits of family presence (FP). Implementation of family presence in adult ICUs remains controversial for nurses. The feelings of many nurses, who are gate keepers related to patient visitation, continue to influence restrictions and/or inconsistent visiting practices for patients and families. Some hospitals have begun to permit relatives to be present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of adult loved ones, yet the availability of unrestricted access beyond official ICU visiting …

Multiple Intelligences, Eclecticism And The Therapeutic Alliance: New Possibilities In Integrative Counsellor Education, Mark Pearson Jan 2012

Multiple Intelligences, Eclecticism And The Therapeutic Alliance: New Possibilities In Integrative Counsellor Education, Mark Pearson

Arts Conference Papers

In the wake of the movement in the field of counselling towards integrative and eclectic practice the search for unifying theories continues. Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences (MI), only recently applied to the field of counselling, has a contribution to make in evolving a framework for eclecticism. MI theory may also have a particular contribution to make towards helping counsellors strengthen the therapeutic alliance and enhance flexibility in responding to clients' needs. Gaining an understanding of clients' preferred cognitive and communication styles, or 'intelligences', enhances an ability to tailor treatment. This presentation argues that increases in the therapeutic alliance and …

Modernizing Matthew Paris: The Standards And Practices Of The First Printed Editions, Kristen Geaman Jan 2012

Modernizing Matthew Paris: The Standards And Practices Of The First Printed Editions, Kristen Geaman

Quidditas

This article discusses the first printed editions of Mathew Paris’s thirteenth-century chronicle, Chronica Maiora, arguing that these editions show a much higher level of editorial sophistication than has yet been recognized. Written between 1235 and 1259, the Chronica Maiora is one of the most extensive and detailed chronicles of medieval England; yet the work was not printed until 1571, as part of a series of historical publications overseen by Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. Although the text of Parker’s edition has been almost universally criticized by scholars, this work suggests that he actually set a high editorial standard, especially by …

Predictors Of Chinese College Students’ Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Deana Andrade Jan 2012

Predictors Of Chinese College Students’ Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Deana Andrade

Undergraduate Review

Historically, filial piety has been a fundamental tenet in Chinese culture. Respecting older adults was expected in society and is an important principle of China’s filial piety responsibility within its culture. However, demographic transformation and economic and social changes in rapidly modernizing societies challenge traditional values. Very little empirical research has examined the factors which influence the attitudes toward older adults among Chinese college students. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that predict attitudes of Chinese college students toward the aging population.

A Case Study: The Impact Of An Immersion Experience On The Vocation Of Lay Teacher-Leaders In American Jesuit High Schools, Martin Joseph Schreiber Jan 2012

A Case Study: The Impact Of An Immersion Experience On The Vocation Of Lay Teacher-Leaders In American Jesuit High Schools, Martin Joseph Schreiber

Dissertations

The purpose of this case study explores the impact of an immersion experience to a least developed country on the vocation of lay teacher leaders in American Jesuit High Schools. Nine lay teacher leaders engaged in a four stage process of immersion from November 2009 to August 2010. The study employed the conceptual framework of Edward Hahnenberg's, "Awakening Vocation" to develop a self-understanding of a lay teacher leader's call. The writings of Paulo Freire, Fredrick Buechner and Parker Palmer informed the study's exploration of vocation. Poetry from Mary Oliver and William Stafford functioned as a method for articulating a lay …

Australian National School Chaplaincy Program : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Online Newspaper Portrayals, Ashley Donkin Jan 2012

Australian National School Chaplaincy Program : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Online Newspaper Portrayals, Ashley Donkin

Theses : Honours

The media’s representation of the Australian National School Chaplaincy Program has not currently been addressed by social theorists. This thesis analyses online newspaper portrayals of the National School Chaplaincy Program, examining a total of eleven major state newspapers. Norman Fairclough’s theory of Critical Discourse Analysis, and particularly his theory on the three main types of assumptions (Existential, Propositional and Value), is employed to examine how language is used to construct ideologies and discourses about the Chaplaincy Program. Four key issues are examined, which include: the role of chaplains, the use of government funding for the Program, as well as church …

The Concept Of Inculturation In Roman Catholicism: A Theological Consideration, Dennis M. Doyle Jan 2012

The Concept Of Inculturation In Roman Catholicism: A Theological Consideration, Dennis M. Doyle

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Inculturation is the term that Catholic leaders and theologians have used in recent decades to denote a process of engagement between the Christian Gospel and a particular culture. The term is intended conceptually both to safeguard the integrity of the Gospel and to encourage sensitivity to various cultural contexts. Inculturation as a theological notion has been specifically associated with John Paul II’s strategy for evangelization, including what is known as the “new evangelization” that focuses on cultures that had traditionally been Christian but which are now not clearly so. Yet inculturation, understood with a somewhat different emphasis, has also been …

A Ritual Investigation Of Sudden Death Events In An Urban United States Emergency Department, Mary Eleanor Mitsch Jan 2012

A Ritual Investigation Of Sudden Death Events In An Urban United States Emergency Department, Mary Eleanor Mitsch

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study investigated sudden death as a social act and a ritual process (Hertz, 1960) in an urban hospital emergency department (ED) in the United States. An analytical auto ethnographic approach was utilized by the author who is a nurse-anthropologist and a bereaved parent. In sudden and a more "prepared for" death, the dying person goes through a rite of passage van Gennep (1960[1909]) and enters into an area of liminality Turner (1967). A key transition from life to death occurs and crossing a threshold where the dying person cannot cross back. The aims of the study were to: 1) …

The Newbury Prayer Bill Hoax: Devotion And Deception In New England's Era Of Great Awakenings, Douglas L. Winiarski

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

[...] [T]he “Tappin manuscript,” as I refer to it in the essay that follows, presents an intriguing puzzle. If Christopher Toppan did not compose the unusual prayer request, then who did? When? Why? Solving the riddle of the Tappin manuscript leads us into the troubled final years of one of New England’s most pugnacious ministers and the evangelical underworld of the Great Awakening that he had come to despise.
