Examination Of The Relationship Between Individual Leadership Style, Teamwork And Learning Preferences -- A Case From A University In China, Raymond Ho

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This study explores the effects of Chinese transformational leaders' preference in teamwork, and creative learning activities and leadership style. Three types of leadership styles, transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire, were measured using Bass and Avolio's (2004) Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Student participants were questioned on their preferences of teamwork based on their leadership styles and type of teaching styles that they preferred. Data analyses indicated that while behaviors associated with transformational leadership motivated followers, the results did not significantly relate to a leader's propensity to support teamwork. In addition, creative learning activities were not preferred by participants who experienced laissez-faire leader behavior. …

Values-Based Management Or The Performance-Values Matrix: Was Jack Welch Right?, Aaron A. Buchko, Kathleen J. Buchko Jan 2012

Values-Based Management Or The Performance-Values Matrix: Was Jack Welch Right?, Aaron A. Buchko, Kathleen J. Buchko

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Two alternative models were identified in the existing literature on organization values and managerial performance. The Values-Based Management model suggests that organizational values influence managerial job performance through a process of enactment, am/ thus managerial performance is contingent upon the strength of the firm's values. The Performance-Values Matrix model suggests that organizational values and managerial job performance are independent constructs. We conducted an empirical study of these two models at a manufacturing facility. We measured organizational values enactment through a 360 degree feedback process using Behavioral Observation Scales, and obtained data on manager's annual job performance appraisal ratings. The results …

Identification Of Perceived 21st Century Graphic Design Skills, Content Knowledge, And Tools Needed In An Effective University-Level Graphic Design Program, Amanda W. Bridges

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify 21st century skills, content knowledge, and tools needed in an effective university-level graphic design program. Inconsistencies in the graphic design curriculum, fueled by the increasingly large number of programs and concentrations and the inability to track graduates, were some of the issues that led to a need for this study.

This study was an expansion of a previous 2006 study conducted by Shyang-Yuh Wang, which took place in Kansas and Missouri. This current study used a modified Delphi Technique in which perceptions from university-level graphic design educators and industry professionals from North …

The Relationship Of Learner-Centered Beliefs Of North Carolina Virtual Public School (Ncvps) Teachers And Student Achievement On The North Carolina End-Of-Course Assessments, Eddy R. Malave Jan 2012

The Relationship Of Learner-Centered Beliefs Of North Carolina Virtual Public School (Ncvps) Teachers And Student Achievement On The North Carolina End-Of-Course Assessments, Eddy R. Malave

Education Dissertations and Projects

Current federal, state, and district mandates charge educators with reform efforts to improve student achievement. Efforts to transform the educational system are facing enormous public pressure to improve. Despite increasing support for learner-centered perspectives, approaches that focus on learners and learning are often based on conflicting assumptions about what is needed for learners to achieve desired learning standards and outcomes (McCombs & Whisler, 1997). Such approaches have a big impact on what teachers believe and a subsequent influence on student outcomes. This study attempted to establish teacher beliefs and their effectiveness on student achievement on the North Carolina EOC assessments. …

Empowering Advisors To Facilitate Change, Melissa R. Shehane, Michael Baumhardt, Michael E. Shehane, Sherry L. Early Phd

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

Advancing group dynamics is difficult. In order for students to learn, develop, and grow within an organization, they need to be empowered by their advisor to feel that their ideas and contributions are both important and valuable. This concept of empowerment means providing freedom for people to do successfully what they want to do, rather than getting them to do what you want them to do (Whetten & Cameron, 2011). As an advisor to a student-led organization, it is important to empower students to identify specific actions and strategies that facilitate change and achieve the outcomes of the organization.

Staff Nurse Perception Of Leadership Styles Among Nurse Managers, Robert A. Jaffe

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

This project examined if transformational nurse managers were perceived by their nursing staff as more effective leaders than transactional or passive/avoidant leaders using the Transformational Theory of Leadership through administration of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Form 5X) to nurse unit managers and staff nurses. 80 staff nurses and seven unit nurse managers participated in the study. Unit nurse managers completed the MLQ (Form 5X) about themselves and nursing staff completed the MLQ (Form 5X) about their unit nurse manager. Using descriptive statistics unit nurse manager results were compared with nursing staff results. The goal was for unit nurse managers to …

The Effect Of Education On Evidence-Based Practice And Nurses' Beliefs/Attitudes Toward And Intent To Use Evidence-Based Practice, Steve Mooney Jan 2012

The Effect Of Education On Evidence-Based Practice And Nurses' Beliefs/Attitudes Toward And Intent To Use Evidence-Based Practice, Steve Mooney

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Purpose: Does tradition or "we have always done it this way" provide for safe, confident care? The care nurses provide should be based on evidence. Many barriers to evidence-based practice (EBP) exist. Nurses' lack of knowledge about EBP and nurses' beliefs/attitudes toward and implementation of EBP need to be addressed. Hospital administration and nursing staff must be aware of current practice guidelines. Awareness of the need for EBP demands a process/action to change practice habits. The rewards of implementing EBP should motivate a transformation leading to adaptation of EBP care. The research question this project proposed to answer was: Will …

Managing Intellectual Property To Foster Agricultural Development, Sara Boettiger, Robert Potter, Stanley P. Kowalski Jan 2012

Managing Intellectual Property To Foster Agricultural Development, Sara Boettiger, Robert Potter, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

Over the past decades, consideration of IPRs has become increasingly important in many areas of agricultural development, including foreign direct investment, technology transfer, trade, investment in innovation, access to genetic resources, and the protection of traditional knowledge. The widening role of IPRs in governing the ownership of—and access to—innovation, information, and knowledge makes them particularly critical in ensuring that developing countries benefit from the introduction of new technologies that could radically alter the welfare of the poor. Failing to improve IPR policies and practices to support the needs of developing countries will eliminate significant development opportunities. The discussion in this …

Desire, Conservatism, Underfunding, Congressional Meddling, And Study Fatigue: Ingredients For Ongoing Reform At The Securities And Exchange Commission?, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

This article suggests the use of program evaluation -- a branch of social science research designed to assess organizations and their activities -- to analyze continued reform efforts at the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") under Section 967 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Section 967 compelled the SEC to retain an independent consultant to evaluate and issue a report on its structure and operations and mandated that the SEC engage in post-study reporting to Congress over a two-year period on its implementation of resulting reforms. The article concludes that program evaluation techniques are useful in …

The purpose of my study was to identify whether university Diversity Statements aid in maintaining or disrupting inequality in the university. Using critical discourse analysis, I analyzed an initial sample of eleven Diversity Statements to develop a list of common themes found within the diversity statements. Using a maximum variation method, I then reduced my sample to four universities to provide breadth of information for the final study (Miles & Huberman, 1994). In my case analysis, I first conducted an individual analysis of each of the four Diversity Statements using the common themes from my critical case analysis, common functions …

Signaling, Resource-Based Power, And Pre-Ipo Organizational Change, John S. Pearlstein, Robert D. Hamilton Jan 2012

Signaling, Resource-Based Power, And Pre-Ipo Organizational Change, John S. Pearlstein, Robert D. Hamilton

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

The theory presented suggests that underwriters are both advisors and independent agents in the issuer’s attempt to send “signals” of quality to investors by making pre-IPO organizational changes. These pre-IPO gambits are intended to increase IPO proceeds, and preemptively address potential investor concerns that would deter them from subscribing. These organizational changes initially can financially benefit founders, early investors and underwriters. But they can also have a longterm impact that some issuers, especially founders, would prefer to avoid. Utilizing signaling and resource-based power, we find that underwriter power is significantly associated with making pre-IPO gambits and lower levels of underpricing.

Developing Public Value Metrics For Returns To Government Ict Investments, Anthony M. Cresswell, Djoko Sigit Sayogo Jan 2012

Developing Public Value Metrics For Returns To Government Ict Investments, Anthony M. Cresswell, Djoko Sigit Sayogo

Center for Technology in Government

This report presents a new approach to assessing public value returns as part of an overall return on investment analysis for government information and communication technologies (ICT). The approach addresses one basic question about public value assessment: What constitutes good evidence of public value impacts? The answers provided here are intended to augment the return on investment analysis methods found in the E-Gov Economics Model: Real Impact for Better Government, developed by Microsoft. However, the approach here has potential uses beyond connection with that Model, and can be more generally useful in the assessment of public value returns to government …

The Impact Of Situational Factors On Information System (Is) Managerial Leader Behaviors: What Information Systems Employees Want, Tim O. Peterson, Jon W. Beard, David D. Van Fleet

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Information systems leadership has evolved dramatically over the past 40 years. Early in the era of computing most attention was focused on the technical skills of IS managers. As IS has become ubiquitous in our organizations and increasingly embedded in our everyday lives, the need for a broader approach to IS management has emerged with an increasing emphasis on non-technical skills in business practices and an appreciation of the impact of organizational culture. Further, information systems managers increasingly find themselves in crisis situations that may require different leadership skills to successfully navigate. These crises may be caused by the physical …

Designing Organizations For Exploration And Exploitation, Tim N. Carroll Jan 2012

Designing Organizations For Exploration And Exploitation, Tim N. Carroll

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

all organizations face the core challenge of deciding on investments in two very different types of activities: exploration and exploitation. exploration activities are future-oriented, such as developing new capabilities, experimenting with new technologies, and pursuing new customers and markets. exploitation activities, in contrast, focus on the refinement of existing competencies, processes, and products. Because an organization’s design should reflect its goals, it is difficult to accommodate exploration and exploitation activities within a single organization. this article discusses four major approaches used to tackle this problem, and notes the strengths and limitations of each approach.
