A Lesson Plan For Communicating The Sustainability Of An Enterprise, Clare L. Comm, Dennis F. X. Mathaisel Feb 2012

A Lesson Plan For Communicating The Sustainability Of An Enterprise, Clare L. Comm, Dennis F. X. Mathaisel

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Sustainability is the ability to endure. For any organization or any enterprise, sustainability is the ability to remain productive long term while minimizing waste and creating value. An organization can achieve sustainability if it aligns itself with the product and service needs of its customers and wants and interests of its multiple stakeholders. The enterprise, whether it is an ecological, environmental, human, or service enterprise, must possess five “abilities” to be sustainable: availability; dependability; capability; affordability; and marketability. This paper presents a lesson plan or strategy for how an enterprise should communicate/promote sustainability to its stakeholders based on these five …

Games As Design Medium: Utilizing Game Boards For Design Enquiry With Cancer Patients, J. Kronkvist, M. Järvinen, T. Leinonen

ServDes Conference Series

As the view of patients as passive receivers of care is changing towards more active participants in the healthcare process; hospitals are gearing up to provide more patient-centric services. At the same time; they are under increasing pressure to do more with stretched resources and demographic changes. To this end; service design has been utilized in many institutions to provide insights gathered from stakeholders and to design services to that focus on the patient. However; hospitals as a unique design context provide specific constraints for the design process. This paper presents a method of enquiry that was developed during an …

The First Case Experience Of Designing For Service, Stefan Holmlid Feb 2012

The First Case Experience Of Designing For Service, Stefan Holmlid

ServDes Conference Series

In order to build a strong foundation for design for service there is a need to develop good courses; modules; and perhaps programs in service design. Regardless of the scope of such teaching; somewhere the students start learning about service design and start learning to do design for service. The first case experience sets the scene for how students view service design; and the opportunities they see in applying design to services. For a long time we used a simple example; to introduce design for service; the tire-changing service. When we turned this example into the first case for the …

The Ethical Ecology Of Service Design - An Explorative Study On Ethics In User Research For Service Design, Bertil Carlsson Feb 2012

The Ethical Ecology Of Service Design - An Explorative Study On Ethics In User Research For Service Design, Bertil Carlsson

ServDes Conference Series

Previous studies have shown that ethical situations within design currently present themselves as an implicit and nonreflexive activity. Others promote a development of ethical tools; which are incorporated within the normal set of methods; and tools used during the design process. However within the service design discipline ethical research has been scarce; some might even say lacking completely. In order to shine a light on the ethics within service design this paper explores the ethical design ecology of service design and gives a first sketch of an ethical baseline for the field. The data represents six weeks of shadowing in-house …

500 Million Frenemies: A Phenomenological Study Of The Prevalence And Perceptions Of Female Students And Male Students As It Relates To Cyber Bullying On Social Networking Websites, Dana Manzi-Schaed

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to discover the lived experiences of male and female high school students regarding cyber bullying on social networking websites. Previous research has shown that male and female students have very different experiences with traditional bullying; the current phenomenon of cyber bullying has yet to be widely researched. In addition, this research sought to better understand what, if any, the gender differences were in how students perceive adult prevention of cyber bullying as well as how both genders behave in informing adults of instances of cyber bullying. The goal of this research was …

Addressing The Failure Of Abstinence-Only Sex Education Programs: An Emerging Leadership Perspective, Cedric Harville Ii Feb 2012

Addressing The Failure Of Abstinence-Only Sex Education Programs: An Emerging Leadership Perspective, Cedric Harville Ii

Florida Public Health Review

Over the past 15 years, abstinence-only sex education has been the sole method of education supported by the federal government as it relates to adolescent sexual health. Despite the exponential increase offunding provided for abstinence-only sex education, few tangible positive results have surfaced. At high rates, teens still take part in risky sexual behaviors, and are at high risks for teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS. As a result, it is necessary to take an alternative approach that provides adolescents with a comprehensive view of sex education in order to effectively reduce these negative outcomes. A comprehensive education will …

Organizations As Systems In Crisis: Characteristics And Behaviors Of Successful Leaders, Dennis Paul Gonzales Feb 2012

Organizations As Systems In Crisis: Characteristics And Behaviors Of Successful Leaders, Dennis Paul Gonzales

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Given the increasingly complex and fluid nature of organizations today, there is an urgent need to study the role that leadership can play in helping organizations to successfully navigate through difficult and turbulent times. This dissertation investigated the journey of six participants who served as leaders in organizations during periods of change and turmoil. An interpretive phenomenological approach was the primary method of data collection, analysis, and interpretation used to organize the data gathered primarily through interviews with the participants. Personal experience, as well as current leadership and change theories served as the background and frame of reference for this …

Organization Design For Foreign Subsidiaries Of Multinational Enterprises: A Contingency Perspective, William Q. Judge, Shaomin Li Feb 2012

Organization Design For Foreign Subsidiaries Of Multinational Enterprises: A Contingency Perspective, William Q. Judge, Shaomin Li

Management Faculty Publications

There has been considerable research suggesting ways to design foreign subsidiaries for multinational enterprises. Unfortunately, much of this research is fragmented and some is even contradictory. This study seeks to comprehensively integrate this research stream by distilling the extant literature around two key contingency factors: (1) governance environment of the host country, and (2) the strategic role of the foreign subsidiary. Specifically, we distilled the multi-national organizational design literature using the institutional economics logic coupled with Galbraith’s classic organizational design framework. This approach yielded twelve new theoretical propositions that better integrates previous theory and research around the four dimensions of …

Beyond Leadership, Kees Rietsema, Daryl Watkins Feb 2012

Beyond Leadership, Kees Rietsema, Daryl Watkins

Publications

Organizational leadership must evolve beyond a focus on those occupying the positions of organizational leadership. Complex systems provide the opportunity to rethink the leadership function in terms which are holistic and comprehensive. Applying the principles of complexity may provide the basis for a more collaborative, distributed and productive “way of being” for today’s organizations.

Rethinking The “Apprenticeship Of Liberty”: The Case For Academic Programs In Community Engagement In Higher Education, Dan W. Butin Feb 2012

Rethinking The “Apprenticeship Of Liberty”: The Case For Academic Programs In Community Engagement In Higher Education, Dan W. Butin

Education Faculty Publications

This article articulates a model for the “engaged campus” through academic programs focused on community engagement, broadly construed. Such academic programs—usually coalesced in certificate programs, minors, and majors—provide a complementary vision for the deep institutionalization of civic and community engagement in the academy that can revitalize an “apprenticeship of liberty” for students, faculty, and academic staff.

The Impact Of The Government Performance And Results Act (Gpra) On Two State Cooperative Extension Systems, Sarah Baughman, Heather H. Boyd, Kathleen D. Kelsey Feb 2012

The Impact Of The Government Performance And Results Act (Gpra) On Two State Cooperative Extension Systems, Sarah Baughman, Heather H. Boyd, Kathleen D. Kelsey

Journal of Extension

The research reported here examined the impact of the Government Performance and Results Act on accountability and evaluation activities in two state Cooperative Extension Systems. Accountability was examined using five dimensions from Koppell's (2005) framework. Findings indicated both Extension systems transferred accountability activities to county-level educators through increased reporting expectations. There was not a strong connection between GPRA and changes in program evaluation practice or understanding in either state. Clear definitions of accountability within Extension and close examination of the role of evaluation may enhance accountability efforts and result in not only using evaluation for accountability but also for organizational …

Programming In A Socially Networked World: The Evolution Of The Social Programmer, Christoph Treude, Fernando Figueira Filho, Brendan Cleary, Margaret-Anne Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social media has changed how software developers collaborate, how they coordinate their work, and where they find information. Social media sites, such as the Question and Answer (Q&A) portal Stack Overflow, fill archives with millions of entries that contribute to what we know about software development, covering a wide range of topics. For today’s software developers, reusable code snippets, introductory usage examples, and pertinent libraries are often just a web search away. In this position paper, we discuss the opportunities and challenges for software developers that rely on web content curated by the crowd, and we envision the future of …

The purpose of this case study was to expand the literature base regarding the application of high school schoolwide positive behavior support (PBS) in an urban setting for practitioners and policymakers to address behavior issues. In addition, the study describes the use of the Change Point Test as a method for analyzing time series data that are dependent in nature. The researchers used an existing case study example to guide the implementation of the intervention. The overall implementation of PBS reached full fidelity during the final year. Focused professional development may have been related to changes in statistically significant office …

Keys To Successful Programming: Incentives In Multi-Institutional Partnerships, James Pritchett, Joan Fulton, Susan Hine Feb 2012

Keys To Successful Programming: Incentives In Multi-Institutional Partnerships, James Pritchett, Joan Fulton, Susan Hine

Journal of Extension

Collaborative partnerships are an important mechanism for meeting client needs in an era of declining resources. Partnerships work best when their areas of concern, goals, and objectives overlap. Yet overlapping goals do not guarantee successful outcomes; rather, aligning incentives is necessary to motivate partners to invest. This article reviews incentive types and discusses the incentives that motivate Extension, government agencies, and private entities. Examples of successful partnerships are provided, and practical steps for achieving successful partnerships are discussed.

The Effects Of The Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program On Targeted Life Skills, Kevin Allen, R Dwayne Elmore Feb 2012

The Effects Of The Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program On Targeted Life Skills, Kevin Allen, R Dwayne Elmore

Journal of Extension

Does participation in the Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP) help develop life skills? 4-H members and coaches who participated in the National WHEP Contest between the years 2003 - 2005 and 2007 - 2009 were asked to complete an evaluation at the end of each contest. A portion of the evaluation asked participants and coaches to determine if six specific life skills (teamwork, oral communication, written communication, social skills, decision making, and leadership) were enhanced as a result of participation in the WHEP. Results suggest that participation in the WHEP has a positive influence on the development of these life …

Management Of Change In The 21st Century Libraries And Information Centres, Samuel Olu Adeyoyin, Abayomi Imam, Taofik Olatunde Bello Feb 2012

Management Of Change In The 21st Century Libraries And Information Centres, Samuel Olu Adeyoyin, Abayomi Imam, Taofik Olatunde Bello

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Long before Johnson's 1998 celebrated story Who Moved My Cheese? a best-selling text on change was published, Charles Darwin in the Origin of Species (1859), documented compelling scientific evidence on species that became extinct because of mal-adaptation or resistance to change. It is intriguing to discover in today's business world, that most businesses that are making waves never existed beyond few decades. In the same vein, most organizations in the past, that roamed their environments like dinosaurs, are today extinct or too flaccid to make earth-breaking impact. Change has caused all these. Organizations that have realized the inevitability of change …

Counter-Mortar Operational Research In The 21 Army Group, Terry Copp Jan 2012

Counter-Mortar Operational Research In The 21 Army Group, Terry Copp

Canadian Military History

The campaign in Northwest Europe has been the subject of thousands of books and articles, including a number based on careful documentary research. But even the best accounts pay insufficient attention to the German weapons systems that inflicted the majority of Allied casualties. The mortar and the Nebelwerfer were chiefly responsible for the Wehrmacht’s temporary success in stablizing the front in Normandy, and for the balance of the war they played a major role in demoralizing and reducing the strength of Allied infantry units. The Allies did not foresee the central role these weapons would play in Northwest Europe and …

The "Valley Of Death" In Medicine Is Not Only A Knowledge Translation But Also A Socio-Cultural And Institutional Problem, Yunmei Wang Jan 2012

The "Valley Of Death" In Medicine Is Not Only A Knowledge Translation But Also A Socio-Cultural And Institutional Problem, Yunmei Wang

Student Scholarship

Substantial resources invested in medical research have generated revolutionary discoveries in medical science. However, it takes 17 years to translate 14% of research findings into clinical practice. The gap between science and practice is labeled as “the Valley of Death” and has been framed as a “lost in translation” problem, therefore the effort has been focusing on the promotion of translational research and translators—physician scientists who understand both science and practice languages. Despite many educational and funding programs, physician’s research interest has declined and the gap has not been narrowed. To understand the underlying mechanism, we conducted a qualitative study …

The Relationship Between Nonprofit Capacity Building, Organizational Learning And Organizational Effectiveness: A Case Study Of Strengthening Communities Fund Program In Central Florida, M L. Broxton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nonprofit capacity building programs and program activities positively influence perceived organizational effectiveness. Being able to link nonprofit capacity building to organizational effectiveness is a paramount concern for both nonprofits seeking capacity building programming and those entities, be it foundations or government that fund capacity building initiatives and programs. Therefore being able to link nonprofit capacity building to organizational effectiveness and higher performance is crucial to ensure that both nonprofit organizations and funders continue to pursue and support capacity building programming. Through an examination of the developing hollow state and the resulting nonprofit capacity disparity this study demonstrates the purposeful need …

Implementing Sustainability Initiatives: A Study Of U.S. Local Governments, Nick Lebredo Jan 2012

Implementing Sustainability Initiatives: A Study Of U.S. Local Governments, Nick Lebredo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sustainability has been framed by the World Commission on Environment and Development as a fundamental concept in human society and by Fiorino (2010) as a critical conceptual focus for public administration over the next decade. A large number of U.S. local governments have implemented sustainability initiatives. Nevertheless, relatively few studies have comprehensively examined sustainability implementation by local governments. This study makes a concerted effort to examine sustainability implementation in U.S. local governments, which have taken the lead in many areas of sustainability. This study also develops a capacity building model to empirically evaluate how organizational strategies and capacities influence sustainability …
