Eliminating Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities: Reconsidering Comparative Approaches, Shawn M. Bediako, Derek M. Griffith Jun 2012

Eliminating Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities: Reconsidering Comparative Approaches, Shawn M. Bediako, Derek M. Griffith

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

The focus on eliminating racial/ethnic health disparities has brought critical attention to the poor health status of minority populations. Assessing the health outcomes of racial minority groups by comparing them to a racial majority standard is valuable for identifying and monitoring health inequities, but may not be the most effective approach to identifying strategies that can be used to improve minority health outcomes. Health promotion planning models and public health history both suggest that minority health promotion is more likely to be derived from interventions rooted in culturally and historically grounded contextual factors. In this essay, we highlight limitations of …

Challenges In Transdisciplinary, Integrated Projects: Reflections On The Case Of Faculty Members’ Failure To Collaborate, Linda Vanasupa, Kathryn E. Mccormick, Carolyn J. Stefanco, Roberta J. Herter, Margot Mcdonald Jun 2012

Challenges In Transdisciplinary, Integrated Projects: Reflections On The Case Of Faculty Members’ Failure To Collaborate, Linda Vanasupa, Kathryn E. Mccormick, Carolyn J. Stefanco, Roberta J. Herter, Margot Mcdonald

Materials Engineering

In this article we describe the challenges of transdisciplinary teamwork involving four faculty members from dissimilar epistemological traditions in the process of developing a manuscript on the lessons learned in our teaching collaboration. Our difficulty originated in implicit mental models and assumptions that caused incongruence between our intent to collaborate and the (habituated) relationship structure of the partnership. The dynamics are described through the lens of Tannenbaum and Schmidt’s leadership model and Aristotle’s causality. We suggest that successful collaboration necessitates careful attention to the process of establishing the collaboration, its structure, and the metacognitive capacities to see one’s own thinking, …

An Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution Looks Toward The Future: A Case Study On A Collaborative, Community-Based Systemic Change Effort At An Urban Land-Grant College, Eric Dunker Jun 2012

An Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution Looks Toward The Future: A Case Study On A Collaborative, Community-Based Systemic Change Effort At An Urban Land-Grant College, Eric Dunker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many higher education organizations face the issue of structural isolation (Ruben, 2004) based on a lack of integration and functional coordination between faculty, staff, and students. Community-based research (CBR) offers higher education a more collaborative, wider reaching avenue of organizing a variety of stakeholders around social change. The CBR model is an atypical change model due to its interdisciplinary, participatory, and collaborative structure that values multiple sources of knowledge and focuses on social justice action. As opposed to serving as the 'experts' who were performing research on a community of people, academics and community members who utilize CBR focus on …

Staff Retention In Small Non-Profit Organizations, Michelle A. Redding Jun 2012

Staff Retention In Small Non-Profit Organizations, Michelle A. Redding

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study is an exploratory analysis of employee perceptions affecting staff recruitment, staff retention and job satisfaction in the small, human service non-profit organization. The study uses a human resource framework to address staff retention and provides conceptual guidance for advancing understanding about staff retention in the non-profit human services sector. The statistical findings are, however, inconclusive without further rigorous examination. A three category typology based on job recruitment factors, job retention factors, and job satisfaction is initially presented to define the strategies. Select dimensions of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors are explored in the recruitment stage of employee decision-making …

A Meta-Analysis Of Workaholism, Jennifer L. Bowler, Avani S. Patel, Mark C. Bowler, Scott A. Methe

Counseling, School Psychology & Sport Faculty Publication Series

This meta-analysis examines the relationship between workaholism and numerous work behaviors and outcomes in an attempt to a) derive a consensus regarding the current state of our understanding of this construct, and b) clarify the impact that the compulsion to work may have on an individual's life. Overall, based on data from 44 studies, results indicate that there is a considerable amount of variability between workaholism and work-related outcomes. Specifically, the two most established and reputable measures of workaholism, the Work Addiction Risk Test (WART) and the Workaholism Battery (WorkBat), appear to focus on uniquely different aspects of workaholism and …

Toward A Situational Model For Regulating International Crimes, Andrew K. Woods Jun 2012

Toward A Situational Model For Regulating International Crimes, Andrew K. Woods

Chicago Journal of International Law

The international criminal regime, as currently conceived, relies almost exclusively on the power of backward-looking criminal sanctions to deter future international crimes. This model reflects the dominant mid-century approach to crime control, which was essentially reactive. Since then, domestic criminal scholars and practitioners have developed and implemented new theories of crime control-theories notable for their promise of crime prevention through ex ante attention to community and environmental factors. Community policing crime prevention through environmental design, and related "situational" approaches to crime control have had a significant impact on the administration of domestic criminal law. This Article evaluates the implications of …

Advancing A Qualitative-Based Research Construct: Methods And Applications, Chien-Tsung Lu, Jennifer Kirschner, Brent D. Bowen, Erin E. Bowen

Aviation Technology Faculty and Staff Publications

A research framework, or construct, provides researchers with generally accepted guidelines to organize scholarly efforts and foster methodological rigor. Over time, many qualitative research frameworks have become fully vetted and recognized, including action research, grounded theory, and phenomenology, among many others. The Policy Research Construct has also evolved over the last decade into a refined framework for use in qualitative and mixed method studies. This paper continues to define the PRC and includes a meta-review of multiple applications of the PRC to examine policy-related research questions, as well as organizational change and program effectiveness research.

The Development Of A Hybrid Safety Course, Michael Robert Ulmer Jun 2012

The Development Of A Hybrid Safety Course, Michael Robert Ulmer

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to develop a hybrid version of a work place safety course for use at Ivy Tech Community College. Students attending Ivy Tech in the Industrial Technology program currently have little options to taking classes other than the traditional face-to-face method, which creates certain challenges for the students. With the creation of a hybrid course, students who take this class are required to drive to campus less each week, resulting in additional savings to the students. A hybrid course also gives the students another option to the traditional delivery model, resulting in increased learning …

The Nature Of Organizational Learning In A State Extension Organization, Mary Simon Leuci Jun 2012

The Nature Of Organizational Learning In A State Extension Organization, Mary Simon Leuci

Journal of Extension

Our complex and rapidly changing world demands a more nimble, responsive, and flexible Extension organization. The findings from a study involving interviews across a state Cooperative Extension Service paint a picture of organizational learning in Extension. Four key dimensions of learning surfaced. Of particular importance are the application of a model for organizational knowledge creation and the characteristics of transformational organizational learning for innovation. Recommendations focus on actively supporting organizational learning, developing ways to tap the vast knowledge and skills of Extension professionals, and institutionalizing means to transfer learning.

The Impact Of Strategic Planning On Mission Achievement In Egyptian Nonprofit Organizations: An Assessment Using The Balanced Scorecard Approach, Nashwa Ghoneim Jun 2012

The Impact Of Strategic Planning On Mission Achievement In Egyptian Nonprofit Organizations: An Assessment Using The Balanced Scorecard Approach, Nashwa Ghoneim

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between strategic planning and organizational performance has rarely been examined in the public and nonprofit sectors. Moreover, most of the existing research has been confined to examining the nonprofit sector in the western society and very little has been conducted about strategic planning in nonprofits in developing countries like Egypt. This study empirically examines the effect of strategic planning on Egyptian nonprofit organization's performance effectiveness. An assessment of performance effectiveness was made using the multiple perspectives of the balanced scorecard. A fifth dimension was added to the balanced scorecard, developed originally by Niven (2008), which is volunteers' development. …

Adopting A Citizen-Centered Approach In Consular Services Provision By The Egyptian Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, Nevine Mohamed El-Saeed Jun 2012

Adopting A Citizen-Centered Approach In Consular Services Provision By The Egyptian Ministry Of Foreign Affairs, Nevine Mohamed El-Saeed

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates whether the necessary preconditions for applying a citizen-centered approach exist in the relationship between Egyptian citizens abroad and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (represented by diplomatic missions abroad). It also explores ways of making the bureaucracy more prepared for applying this new approach in an attempt to enhance consular service provision, and to rebuild the lost trust between Egyptians abroad and the Egyptian government. The study showed that even though there are continuous interactions between citizens abroad and diplomatic missions, the communication pattern between the two sides is still in the information stage, and has not moved …

Employee Readiness For Change Through The Lens Of The Cultural Self-Representation Theory, Ma. Regina Hechanova, Emerald Jay D. Ilac, Sarah Ellorenco Jun 2012

Employee Readiness For Change Through The Lens Of The Cultural Self-Representation Theory, Ma. Regina Hechanova, Emerald Jay D. Ilac, Sarah Ellorenco

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

Change is imperative in organizations. One fundamental tool in instigating innovation is change management. Employee engagement is seen as a primary ingredient in successfully triggering readiness to change. However, beyond change management, culture is important in influencing employee engagement and readiness to change. Research suggests that Filipino employees, who generally possess a collectivist cultural orientation, are more motivated when working in groups. Therefore, good working relations are important in eliciting engagement among them. This study hypothesizes that both change management and samahan (a Filipino concept on quality of relationships) is mediated by engagement, which brings about readiness for change. Furthermore, …

Workplace Spirituality, Meditation, And Work Performance, Pawinee Petchsawanga, Dennis Duchon Jun 2012

Workplace Spirituality, Meditation, And Work Performance, Pawinee Petchsawanga, Dennis Duchon

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

This paper reports two studies that examine how an organization might enable more productive work practices by encouraging the expression of its employees’ spiritual selves in an eastern context. Study 1 shows that people who regularly practice meditation have higher workplace spirituality scores than people who do not regularly practice meditation. Study 2 reports a quasi-experimental study in which people practiced insight meditation. The data did not reveal a direct effect for the meditation, however spirituality does relate to work performance. Moreover, the practice of meditation is also found to partially mediate the relationship between workplace spirituality and work performance.

Batterers' Perception Of Treatment Non-Completion, Zoila Gordon Jun 2012

Batterers' Perception Of Treatment Non-Completion, Zoila Gordon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine reasons why batterers drop out of batterers’ intervention programs. A qualitative design was utilized within the framework of Gove’s Prime Physical Theory, Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory and Braithwaite’s Reintegrative Shaming Theory. Data collection included interviewing a sample of 22 court mandated male batterers, who had initially dropped out of treatment and had been reinstated. Participants were from a diverse background. Results indicated five key themes that emerged from the batterers’ responses: (1) An overall lack of trust toward the legal system which greatly contributed to anger upon entering group; (2) a lack of …

Disciplinary Effect Of Internal Control Provisions Of Sox On Corporate Governance Structures, Beng Wee Goh Jun 2012

Disciplinary Effect Of Internal Control Provisions Of Sox On Corporate Governance Structures, Beng Wee Goh

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines whether the internal control provisions under the Sarbanes–Oxley Act (SOX) have a disciplining effect on the governance structures of firms. We find that audit committee members and outside directors of firms that disclose material weaknesses (MWs) under Section 302 of SOX are more likely to leave the firms compared to their counterparts in a matched sample of control firms without such weaknesses, and they lose more outside directorships than their counterparts in the control firms. These results are consistent with the notion that the labor market imposes reputational penalties for internal control failures. Although the MW firms …

Addressing Change In Academic Libraries: A Review Of Classical Organizational Theory And Implications For Academic Libraries, Glenn S. Mcguigan Jun 2012

Addressing Change In Academic Libraries: A Review Of Classical Organizational Theory And Implications For Academic Libraries, Glenn S. Mcguigan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

While in the literature of Library and information Science (LIS) there is much discussion of organizational approaches to solve the problems and opportunities posed by change, there is surprisingly little reference to the “classical” foundations of organizational theory. While by no means comprehensive, the purpose of this article is to provide an overview of classical organizational theory for academic librarians to inform the discussions of change.

How should academic libraries respond to change? Change impacts academic libraries from many dimensions, causing an intensity of introspection and soul searching never before seen in the field’s history. This self-reflection brings into …

Tea Time: Raising Awareness And Support For Extension, Nancy K. Franz, Chris Fahey

Journal of Extension

In a time of reliance on electronic media for information, chaotic programming environments, and declining public resources, Extension workers need to find unique ways to connect with stakeholders to maintain and increase support for programming. To address this need, we developed, conducted, and evaluated a series of stakeholder teas. We found this method of communicating with stakeholders builds social, political, and fiscal support for Extension programming.

Using Single-Case Participatory Action Research As A Methodology To Explore Appalachian Summer Camp Communities, Barry Garst, Nancy K. Franz Dr., Brian Peters, Chris Smith, Sarah Baughman

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

Community educators have long known the value of direct experience in the learning process. Participatory action research extends this philosophy to the realm of research. This article examines the value of involving front line camp staff, members of the camp community in Appalachia as practitioner researchers with university scientists in studying the type and conditions of transformative learning in young adult camp staff. A young adult who was a camp community member assisted the researchers with methodology, data analysis, data interpretation, and dissemination of findings. This resulted in a more accurate, richer, and thicker description of the camp community member’s …

Effects Of Information Importance And Distribution On Information Exchange In Team Decision Making, Babajide James Osatuyi May 2012

Effects Of Information Importance And Distribution On Information Exchange In Team Decision Making, Babajide James Osatuyi

Dissertations

Teams in organizations are strategically built with members from domains and experiences so that a wider range of information and options can be pooled. This strategic team structure is based on the assumption that when team members share the information they have, the team as a whole can access a larger pool of information than any one member acting alone, potentially enabling them to make better decisions. However, studies have shown that teams, unlike individuals, sometimes do not effectively share and use the unique information available to them, leading to poorer decisions. Research on information sharing in team decision making …

Managing From The Middle, Lisa Williams May 2012

Managing From The Middle, Lisa Williams

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

How can middle managers successfully improve work conditions and performance of their staff as part of becoming a better manager? This synthesis reviews relevant literature to develop five key principles in my argument: Motivation is the key, the change process begins with me, change is an ongoing and fluid process, middle managers have a need for team and middle managers play different roles during team building. I have also developed a handy booklet for the middle manager to use in changing their management style, which is included as Appendix. The booklet first briefly explains the principles. It then discusses four …

Using Organization Theory To Explore The Changing Role Of Medical Libraries, Kathy J. Fatkin

School of Information Student Research Journal

This historical research review uses organization theory to describe and interpret the evolution of American hospitals, medical libraries, and the role of the professional librarian. Various organization theories are applied to explain changes in hospitals and medical libraries over time. The interaction between the organization and the environment as described in organization theory shaped the emergence of today's information services. For readers unfamiliar with health sciences libraries, the study will provide a glimpse into the social forces that framed the development of this type of special library.
