The Personal Assessment Tool: An Experiment, Jutta Willamowski, Yves Hoppenot, Christelle Loiodice, Antonietta Grasso, Victor Ciriza

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We present the Personal Assessment Tool (PAT) aiming at making users aware of the impact of their behavior on the environment and helping them to reduce it. PAT targets print behavior in a corporate work environment. We have deployed PAT in our research center and describe this experiment along with preliminary findings and observations. From these findings we conclude that PAT definitely motivated the participating users to improve their print behavior. Nevertheless it also highlighted the constrained aspects of printing in a work environment calling for organizational changes of established work processes.

The Anatomy Of French Production Hierarchies, Lorenzo Caliendo, Ferdinando Monte, Esteban Rossi-Hansberg Jul 2012

The Anatomy Of French Production Hierarchies, Lorenzo Caliendo, Ferdinando Monte, Esteban Rossi-Hansberg

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We use a comprehensive dataset of French manufacturing firms to study their internal organization. We first divide the employees of each firm into ‘layers’ using occupational categories. Layers are hierarchical in that the typical worker in a higher layer earns more, and the typical firm occupies less of them. In addition, the probability of adding (dropping) a layer is very positively (negatively) correlated with value added. We then explore the changes in the wages and number of employees that accompany expansions in layers, output, or markets (by becoming exporters). The empirical results indicate that reorganization, through changes in layers, is …

An Empirical Understanding Of The Dialectic Relationship Between A Central Governing Body And The Individual Sites In A Multisite Enterprise Resource Planning (Erp) System Implementation, Tedde J. Taege Jul 2012

An Empirical Understanding Of The Dialectic Relationship Between A Central Governing Body And The Individual Sites In A Multisite Enterprise Resource Planning (Erp) System Implementation, Tedde J. Taege

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Multisite enterprise resource planning (ERP) system implementations are a challenge faced by organizations. One of the facets of this challenge is to balance the central control of the multisite implementation with the unique requirements desired by each of the sites. The competing interests of the individual sites against the other sites as well as the total organization are forces at work with respect to the collective interest of the organization’s ERP. The study seeks to gain insights into the dynamics of a multisite organizational ERP implementation by analyzing the motivations and challenges in the interactive relationship. The grounded theory approach …

Toward A Situational Model For Regulating International Crimes, Andrew K. Woods Jul 2012

Toward A Situational Model For Regulating International Crimes, Andrew K. Woods

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The international criminal regime, as currently conceived, relies almost exclusively on the power of backward-looking criminal sanctions to deter future international crimes. This model reflects the dominant mid-century approach to crime control, which was essentially reactive. Since then, domestic criminal scholars and practitioners have developed and implemented new theories of crime control—theories notable for their promise of crime prevention through ex ante attention to community and environmental factors. Community policing crime prevention through environmental design, and related "situational" approaches to crime control have had a significant impact on the administration of domestic criminal law.

This Article evaluates the implications of …

Planning And Implementing Online Instruction: Faculty Perceptions Of One University, James M. Wright Jul 2012

Planning And Implementing Online Instruction: Faculty Perceptions Of One University, James M. Wright

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

To maintain a competitive advantage, many universities have expanded their online course offerings, and college faculty members are vital to the design, development, and delivery of online instruction (Allen & Seaman, 2007; Mitchell & Geva-May, 2009; Tabata & Johnsrud, 2008). In this study, a mixed-method approach is used to investigate faculty’s perceptions about teaching online at one university. Understanding the factors that motivate and impede faculty to teach online provided the knowledge to plan future strategies to increase faculty participation with this instructional medium.

At a large suburban university in the Southeastern United States, 363 faculty members were surveyed and …

Enabling Design Service Facilitating Interand Intra-Organizational Sensemaking, Magnus Eneberg Jul 2012

Enabling Design Service Facilitating Interand Intra-Organizational Sensemaking, Magnus Eneberg

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The contribution of design is often regarded as providing a relieving service that delivers aesthetic competence at the end of a product development process. Previous studies have shown that industrial design consultancies aspire to be a strategic resource in their client firms, and that the focus of design is becoming increasingly intangible. The claim is that the competencies of the designer can be used to enhance innovation and the strategic process in client firms. At the same time, studies indicate that industrial design consultancies have a problem getting commissioned and paid for the intangible parts of their service. This indicates …

Transforming Universities With Design Thinking, Randy Swearer Jul 2012

Transforming Universities With Design Thinking, Randy Swearer

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This author asserts that U.S. higher education must greatly accelerate the rate at which it innovates by fundamentally redesigning itself. The paper approaches this subject by first outlining the significant challenges faced by American colleges and universities. It then analyzes the case of a university that is facing these challenges by broadly integrating design thinking into its curriculum and planning processes. The author frames the rationale for pursuing an innovation agenda in this manner and critically presents the results. The case suggests that under certain conditions it is possible for universities to become designable, and when this occurs innovative and …

Design Prototypes As Boundary Objects In Innovation Processes, Holger Rhinow, Eva Koeppen, Christoph Meinel Jul 2012

Design Prototypes As Boundary Objects In Innovation Processes, Holger Rhinow, Eva Koeppen, Christoph Meinel

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In our paper we focus on how design prototypes can foster communications in organizations that deal with the development of innovations. We distinguish the impact of prototypes between two different organizational levels; we first conduct the impact of prototypes at the level of organizational design teams that develop ideas and concepts for solutions. We then focus on the impact of prototypes on the level of organizational teams and departments that have not been part of the initial design phase but are responsible for further developments in the innovation process, e.g. production, financing, and marketing. Previous research has indicated that prototypes …

Innovation In Large Organizations: A Matter Of Value And Belief?, Daniela Rothkegel Jul 2012

Innovation In Large Organizations: A Matter Of Value And Belief?, Daniela Rothkegel

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper extends the design and organizational literature by evaluating the impact of values and beliefs on multi-levels as blocking factors in large organizations. The problem that has initiated this research is that large organizations often have difficulties to develop radical innovations. The idea of this research is to identify contradictions in intentions in the beginning of a multidisciplinary bottom-up initiative for new product development as possible reasons for the creation of hinders. Not identified contradictions remain hidden by psychological contracts. (Rousseau, 1995) A mapping exercise has been created to evaluate existing values and beliefs, roles and processes by assumptions, …

Shaping And Expressing Of Happiness Image In Products, Ju-Chuan Cheng, Ming-Chyuan Ho Jul 2012

Shaping And Expressing Of Happiness Image In Products, Ju-Chuan Cheng, Ming-Chyuan Ho

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Happiness is humans' constant and eternal pursuit. The aspiration for happiness is also directly reflected in presentation of products. Spiritual value of products can be shaped by design conversion. Compared with emotional products, products with image of happiness are much closer to aspiration deep in people's heart and play the role of enlightening and nourishing people's spirit. It's shown by literature analysis that the sense of happiness emerges from satisfaction to feeling, perception and sensation. Besides function and sense of beauty, the sensation of "bring happiness to people" should also be taken into consideration in products' connotation. This study is …

Co-Creating With Companies: A Design Led Process Of Learning, Alessandro Deserti, Francesca Rizzo Jul 2012

Co-Creating With Companies: A Design Led Process Of Learning, Alessandro Deserti, Francesca Rizzo

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design emerged and spread at the beginning of the industrial era in a strongly industrial and product-oriented environment. Therefore it developed and consolidated around the notion of industrial product. Today, different voices are calling for a new role for design as a driver of innovation. Especially the notion of co-design, intended as the process of involving customers and end users in developing new products and services has been largely discussed as a source of competitive advantage and as a key element of innovation for companies. Co-design can help companies in generating new and alternative solutions that can satisfy the market …

The Implementation Of Evidence To Improve Falls Prevention: Lessons From A Case Study In Aged Care, Gisela M. Van Kessel

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

This paper reports on a study investigating the construction of falls prevention evidence within an aged care organization. It describes how the structure and culture of an aged care organization influences the construction of falls prevention evidence by staff. Method: An instrumental single case study design grounded in an interpretive, constructivist paradigm drew on data collected in 2010 from a document review, observations, and informal interviews with nursing and allied health staff. An iterative analysis used a model of diffusion determinants. Results: The aged care organization which served as the case for this study linked its cultural strengths of vision, …

Independent of the stage of economic development, entrepreneurship plays a significant role for the expansion, job creation and overall economic health within a country. As a leading international indicator of entrepreneurial activity around the world, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) provides valuable insight into the state of entrepreneurship within and across developed and developing economies. Knowing the entrepreneurial aspirations of country’s residents is particularly relevant in Singapore’s innovation-driven economy given that the country’s prosperity depends largely on the economic activities of its citizens. We describe the key definitions and terms used in the GEM as well as the stages of …

Organizational Identity And Capability Development In Internationalization: Transference, Splicing, And Enhanced Imitation In Tesco’S Us Market Entry, Michelle Lowe, Gerard George, Oliver Alexy Jul 2012

Organizational Identity And Capability Development In Internationalization: Transference, Splicing, And Enhanced Imitation In Tesco’S Us Market Entry, Michelle Lowe, Gerard George, Oliver Alexy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Entry into international markets is a challenging process that fundamentally tests existing capabilities. During this entry process, capability gaps arise that need to be bridged to exploit the commercial opportunity and grow the business. Using a global retailer, Tesco plc, as a case study and employing grounded theory development techniques, we find that to achieve growth, two organizational attributes become critical—structural coherence of the firm’s capabilities and organizational identity. We identify three processes of capability development during market entry—transference, splicing and enhanced imitation. Further, actions and processes that maintain or adapt organizational identity serve as moderators of the relationship between …

Overcoming Barriers: How Community College Faculty Successfully Overcome Barriers To Participation In Distance Education, Matthew Meyer Jul 2012

Overcoming Barriers: How Community College Faculty Successfully Overcome Barriers To Participation In Distance Education, Matthew Meyer

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

To determine the primary barriers encountered by community college faculty in participating in distance education, community college faculty and administrators from community colleges in North Carolina and Virginia were surveyed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Two separate online surveys were provided to faculty and distance education administrators (including chief academic officers) that included demographic questions and barrier assessment questions for both groups. Follow-up interviews were conducted among faculty and administrators at colleges that self-reported having successful or poorly performing distance education programs. To further frame the attributes of faculty participators and non-participators in distance education, the diffusion of innovations …

A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski Jul 2012

A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation studies failures in the U.S. banking industry following the 2008 financial crisis. The dissertation offers an exhaustive review of the organizational failure literature, and changes in the banking industry environment over the past century. It takes three theoretical perspectives - institutional, industrial organization and resource-based view- to analyze failures in the banking industry.

The review and analysis allows me to trace the roots of recent bank failures to external (institutional, competitive) and internal (resource structure, strategy, risk) factors, and propose several hypotheses linking such factors with failures. The hypotheses are tested using a data-set that included all bank …

A Study Of Risk-Taking Behavior In Investment Banking, Elzotbek Rustambekov Jul 2012

A Study Of Risk-Taking Behavior In Investment Banking, Elzotbek Rustambekov

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation examines corporate risk-taking behavior by investment banks in the United States. This study was sparked by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, one of the largest bankruptcy filings in U.S. history. This dissertation examines the specific factors that drove investment banks such as Lehman Brothers to take excessive risks, and how the deregulation of the US financial services industry towards the end of the 1990s contributed to risk-taking behavior.

I use four theoretical perspectives to examine corporate risk-taking behavior among investment banks. These perspectives include: institutional theory, behavioral theory of the firm, knowledge based view (KBV) of the firm, …

Academic Integrity: Preventing Cheating With The Implementation Of An Honor Code, Camille Burgess Jowanna

i.e.: inquiry in education

The purpose of this study was to determine if implementing an honor code would diminish academic dishonesty at Tampa Catholic High School. Quantitative survey instruments were administered twice, in August 2009 and in January 2010, to measure the reaction of student and faculty participants to the introduction of an honor code. Survey responses indicated that there was a shift in behaviors towards increased academic honesty. Comparison of the first semester data over the last two years showed a 38% decrease in the number of students disciplined for academic dishonesty. Future directions to advance the school’s culture of academic integrity include …
