In order to understand these behaviours, there is a need to look into the chromosomal alterations and gene pathways that maybe associated with oral cancer at these sites. In order to establish an efficient in vitro propagation protocol for Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, Murashige and Skoog (MS) and woody plant medium (WPM) with different concentrations and types of auxin and cytokinin were used. The leaf explants of G. jasminoides were cultured on MS and WPM medium containing 3% sucrose and different concentrations of NAA, IBA, IAA, 2,4-D as aux-in and TDZ & Kn as cytokinin with range of 0-5 mg l-1 in order to obtain callus, shoot and root formation. Neurotrophic factors play an indispensable role in the functionality and development of the nervous system. One of the well-studied neurotrophic factors is nerve growth factor (NGF), which is required for the growth and differentiation of dorsal root ganglion and sympathetic ganglion neurons. Studies have shown that the bioactive compounds - hericenones and erinacines of Hericium erinaceus (Bull.: Fr.) Pers., a medicinal mushroom widely used in Japan, Korea and China, can induce NGF synthesis in nerve cells. The main aims of this study were to investigate the combined effects of a natural compound 1’S-1’-acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA) with cisplatin (CDDP) on human cervical carcinoma cells Ca Ski, and to identify microRNAs (miRNAs) asscociated with response towards ACA and/or CDDP. Data obtained from MTT cell viability assays indicated that both ACA and CDDP induced dose- and time-dependent cytotoxicity on Ca Ski cells when used as a standalone agent. The in vitro studies also demonstrated that ACA potentiates the cytotoxic effects of CDDP when used in combination through synergistic interactions. Goniothalamus tapisoides Mat Salleh, a plant from Annonaceae family, has been studied. Collected from Sarawak, the bark of this plant were dried and grounded before phytochemical study was performed. The chromatographic separation on the dichloromethane extracts of the bark gave eleven compounds – six known and five new. Six known compounds were identified as goniothalamin 1, pterodondiol 164, liriodenine 114, 9-deoxygoniopypyrone 15, benzamide 161 and cinnamic acid 155. Five new compounds are goniomicin A 157, goniomicin B 158, goniomicin C 159, goniomicin D 160 and tapisoidin 162.

Tilapia is an important farmed freshwater fish in Malaysia. Tilapia farming was introduced in Malaysia in the 1940’s. In 2003, tilapia accounted 21,417 tons of total freshwater aquaculture production. Red hybrid is the most popular tilapia species cultured in Malaysia. Yogurt is popularly consumed because of its high digestibility, refreshing organoleptic properties and the healthy bacteria it contains. Milk incubated with starter culture (SC) at 41⁰C in the presence of plants (Momordica grosvenori, Psidium guajava, Lycium barbarum or Garcinia mangostana) water extract were studied to examine the effects on acidification, microbial growth, gelation and exopolysaccharide (EPS) content. Initial pH values (5.8-6.2) of the mixture of milk, plant water extract and SC were not different (p>0.05) from control (6.20; mixture of milk and SC). The motivation in this work is to ensure that the chitosan biopolymer can be used as a host for ion conduction and used as an electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The conductivity of the chitosan-NH4I electrolytes was optimized by varying the NH4I concentration, blending chitosan with PVA and PEO and also by incorporating of ionic liquid (IL). The electrolytes were prepared by solution cast technique. FTIR results confirm complexation between polymer, NH4I and IL. Hydrogen bonding between chitosan and PVA and between chitosan and PEO are observed in the respective spectrum. XRD indicates that the amorphousness of pure chitosan, …

The objectives of this study were to determine the efficiency of controlled internal drug release (CIDR) to synchronize estrus in cow, and to study the success rate of estrus synchronization and fertility responses with respect to animal’s breed, farming system and body condition score (BCS). The study was conducted between January 2007 to December 2008 in three private farms in Gua Musang, Kelantan. The present study evaluated the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of three mangrove species namely, Sonneratial alba, Rhizophora mucronat and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. The bioactivities of methanol, ethanol and chloroform extracts of in vivo and in vitro explants of S. alba and in vivo explants of R. mucronata and B. gymnorrhiza were evaluated. Dynamics and trophic role of zooplankton community were studied in the Matang mangrove estuaries and adjacent coastal waters, Malaysia. Monthly zooplankton samples collected from May 2002 to October 2003 at five stations located from the upper estuary (7 km upstream) to 16 km offshore showed highest biomass and abundance of zooplankton at nearshore waters. Both standing stocks decreased towards upstream and offshore waters. Copepods (62% of total zooplankton abundance) dominated the zooplankton, followed by larvae of cirripede (18%) and polychaete (4%). Copepod abundance was higher during the wetter northeast (NE) monsoon and inter-monsoon (IN) period as compared to the drier …

Biomass of various sources such as those of cellulosic and hemicellulosic contents were proven to produced bioethanol. This study focused on the production of bioethanol from waste fruits of grapes and apples using yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is viewed as a mean of reducing environmental pollution. High bioethanol production was obtained using yeast loading of 4 g/L at 32°C after 3 days of fermentation time producing bio-ethanol 13.1% (v/v) and 9.2% (v/v) in rotten grapesand apples respectively. Bioethanol yeild was observed to decreased with increasing fertmentation time beyond 3 days, probably due to microbial wastes such as CO2 that accumulates …

In vivo and in vitro germination of three types of seeds including matured (black), immature or fruits (green) and young (yellow) of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. (pink Asian lotus) were done. The black and green seeds both gave the highest responses to technique of scarified with medium-sand paper and germinated in liquid (tap water) and solid (MS basal media) substrates. The black seeds with germination rate of 67.01±0.28% in vivo and 78.35±0.61% in vitro, while, green seed with 75.12±0.16% in vivo and 100.00% in vitro germination. Phyllanthaceae species have been extensively used in folk medicine in most tropical and subtropical countries for thousand of years. However, there is a paucity of information on the cytotoxic properties of these plants. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the cytotoxic and apoptotic activity of crude methanol (CME), hexane (CHE) and ethyl acetate (CEE) extracts of the selected Phyllanthaceae species collected from different parts of Peninsular Malaysia, namely Phyllanthus niruri (dukong anak), P. pectinatus (Pokok Melaka), P. acidus (cermai), P. roseus (Labu Kuncing), P. watsonii and Baccaurea motleyana (rambai).
