Differentiation Of Oral Candidal Species Based On The Internally Transcribed Spacer (Its) Regions Of Rdna / Raja Ahmad Zahir Raja Halinuddin, Raja Ahmad Zahir Raja Halinuddin

Student Works (2010-2019)

Candida is a genus of opportunistic yeast that are usually harmless residents of the oral cavity, but they become pathogenic under conditions which allow them to increase their proportion to other members of the oral microflora. Correct and accurate identification of the candidal species infecting an oral candidiasis patient is important due to antifungal drug resistences. The region in the fungal genome that contains the gene that codes for rRNA, also known as rDNA, has been found to be useful for phylogenetic studies and species identification. The purpose of this study is to compare the candidal loads of denture wearers, …

Effects Of Brucea Javanica And Piper Betle Extracts On Oral Candida Spp / Mohd-Al-Faisal Nordin, Nordin Mohd Al-Faisal

Student Works (2010-2019)

Candida species is an opportunistic microorganism residing in the human oral cavity. There is increasing prevalence of candidal infections in the oral cavity largely because of the increasing size of the population at risk. The rise in diagnosed cases of oral candidiasis is also due to the immunosuppressive effect of prescribed antifungal agents on resistant hosts. The ability of Candida species to adhere on mucosal tissues and/or denture surfaces, and the production of hydrolytic enzymes along with defective host immunity are among the known key factors of invasions and pathogenesis of oral candida. Although Candida albicans remains as the most …

Quorum Sensing And Quorum Quenching Studies In Clinical Acinetobacter Isolates From Ummc / Deepa Anbazhagan, Deepa Anbazhagan Jan 2012

Quorum Sensing And Quorum Quenching Studies In Clinical Acinetobacter Isolates From Ummc / Deepa Anbazhagan, Deepa Anbazhagan

Student Works (2010-2019)

Quorum sensing is a term that describes an environmental sensing system that allows bacteria to monitor their own population density. Many gram negative bacteria use N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) as autoinducing quorum sensing signal molecules. This cell-density dependent regulation of gene expression contributes significantly to the size and development of the biofilm. Acinetobacter spp. are now emerging as important nosocomoial pathogens and it has been shown that they form biofilms with enhanced antibiotic resistance. In this study, we sought to find out if the biofilm formation among clinical isolates of Acinetobacter spp. is under the control of autoinducing quorum sensing molecules. …

The Role Of Gelam Honey In Modulating The Immune Reponse Of Sepsis In Animal Model / Mustafa Kassim, Mustafa Kassim Jan 2012

The Role Of Gelam Honey In Modulating The Immune Reponse Of Sepsis In Animal Model / Mustafa Kassim, Mustafa Kassim

Student Works (2010-2019)

Persistent systemic inflammatory response syndrome is a serious health condition that may lead to multiple organ dysfunction, organ failure, and ultimately death. It leads to both acute inflammation, caused by either infective (microbes or lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) or non-infective (chemicals) sources, and sepsis, an infection caused by a lethal dose of LPS (endotoxemia). These conditions have similar inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, nitric oxide (NO), high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), suggesting that they may result from similar pathogenic mechanisms. Previous studies have investigated the applications of natural products in targeting these inflammatory mediators. Honey, for example, is used …

Association Of Tcf7l2 Variants With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Susceptibility And Treatment Outcome In A Multi-Ethnic Malaysian Population / Muhammad Huzaimi Bin Haron, Haron Muhammad Huzaimi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a multifactorial disease, where a combination of risk factors interacts and plays different roles, culminating in the disease proper. One such risk factor is genetics. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in several genes have been implicated in rising T2DM risk; one such gene is the transcription factor 7-like-2 (TCF7L2), which has been showed to blunt incretin action (specifically glucagon-like peptide-1, GLP-1), leading to impaired glucose-induced insulin secretion. Furthermore, these SNPs were also associated with an impaired therapeutic response to the sulfonylurea group of oral antidiabetic agents. To date, there is only one small scale study …

Secrets, Lies, And Disclosure, Helen Norton Jan 2012

Secrets, Lies, And Disclosure, Helen Norton

Publications

This symposium essay suggests that we can sometimes understand those who resist campaign disclosure or disclaimer requirements as interested in keeping a secret and occasionally even in telling a sort of lie about the source or intensity of support for a particular candidate or cause. Such secrets and lies threaten listeners’ autonomy interests when the speaker seeks to keep such secrets (and sometimes seeks to tell such lies) to enhance her ability to influence her listeners’ decisions. For these reasons, I suggest greater attention to the reasons speakers seek to keep secrets (or occasionally tell such lies) in assessing the …

Which To Become? Encountering Fungi In Australian Poetry, John Ryan Jan 2012

Which To Become? Encountering Fungi In Australian Poetry, John Ryan

Research outputs 2012

As a largely unexplored group of organisms, fungi are ecologically complex members of the Australian biota. Fungi represent non-human alterity and interstitiality-neither animal not plant, beautiful yet evanescent, slimy and lethal, and eliding scientific categorisations. Donna Haraway's notion of "companion species" and Anna Tsing's "arts of inclusion" remind us that sensory entanglements are intrinsic to human-fungi relations. Drawing conceptually from Haraway and Tsing, this paper will examine examples of poetry from John Shaw Neilson, Jan Owen, Douglas Stewart, Geoffrey Dutton, Caroline Caddy, Michael Dransfield, Philip Hodgins, Jaime Grant and John Kinsella that represent sensory involvements with fungi based in smell, …

Passive Flora? Reconsidering Nature's Agency Through Human-Plant Studies (Hps), John Ryan Jan 2012

Passive Flora? Reconsidering Nature's Agency Through Human-Plant Studies (Hps), John Ryan

Research outputs 2012

Plants have been—and, for reasons of human sustenance and creative inspiration, will continue to be—centrally important to societies globally. Yet, plants—including herbs, shrubs, and trees—are commonly characterized in Western thought as passive, sessile, and silent automatons lacking a brain, as accessories or backdrops to human affairs. Paradoxically, the qualities considered absent in plants are those employed by biologists to argue for intelligence in animals. Yet an emerging body of research in the sciences and humanities challenges animal-centred biases in determining consciousness, intelligence, volition, and complex communication capacities amongst living beings. In light of recent theoretical developments in our understandings of …
