Lmao; That Guy Is Such A &*%#!: Redefining Defamation Law's Stagnant Community Standard In A Rapidly Changing World, Daniel Lewis

Florida A & M University Law Review

Nearly forty years ago in the heat of the civil rights movement, the Supreme Court famously considered whether a Montgomery, Alabama Commissioner who supervised the Police Department was damaged by defamatory comments. In determining whether the false statements published in the New York Times article lowered the Commissioner's reputation and impeded his reelection chances, the court wrestled with defining the community in which these comments were published. Should the Supreme Court consider the allegedly defamatory comments within the scope of a national community, as the New York Times is a national publication, or was the correct community restrained to the …

Characterization Of Maize Sex-Determination Gene Orthologs In Rice (Oryza Sativa L. Japonica Cv. Nipponbare), John Ventura

Open Access Master's Theses

Ensuring food security will be a crucial problem in the coming decades. Heterosis, the phenomenon where hybrid progeny exhibit increased vigor in comparison to their inbred parents, has been exploited to increase agricultural yield in maize (Zea mays) for decades due to its monoecious reproductive state. Unisexuality in maize is genetically controlled due to the concerted action of the Tassel seed1 (ts1), Tassel seed2 (ts2), and Silkless1 (sk1) genes. Orthologs of the Tassel seed genes and sk1 can be found in the rice genome even though rice maintains an ancestral cosexual floral …

Nutrition Policy, Nonmarket Failure, And The Obesity Epidemic, James Woodward

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are based on the Dietary Goals for the United States, represent the federal government’s first attempt to improve the nation’s health by recommending that Americans avoid certain foods. The Guidelines were based on what was perceived, by the government and nutritionists alike, to be solid scientific evidence that consumption of fat and saturated fat in particular, increase the risk of developing heart disease. They also emphasized, and continue to emphasize, the importance of exercise and calorie restriction as the primary means of maintaining a healthy weight. In short, the Guidelines sought to …

On The Need For Public Boarding Schools, Bret D. Asbury, Kevin Woodson Jan 2012

On The Need For Public Boarding Schools, Bret D. Asbury, Kevin Woodson

Georgia Law Review

Nowhere is the inadequacy of American public
education more striking than in high-poverty, urban
schools populated by disadvantaged minority students.
Despite decades of legal, policy, and scholarly efforts
aimed at addressing the challenges facing these schools,
the academic prospects of poor students are currently as
grim as they have been in recent memory. Reformers
seeking to address this problem have largely focused on
transforming public education from within by focusing on
school conditions or teacher performance. These efforts
have largely failed to bring about real progress: despite
decades of litigation and reform, our nation's most
disadvantaged children continue to lack …
