Thinking Beyond Borders: Critical Pedagogy In A Neoliberal Economy, Sarah E. White Nov 2012

Thinking Beyond Borders: Critical Pedagogy In A Neoliberal Economy, Sarah E. White

Capstone Collection

The aim of the capstone is to explore the role of critical pedagogy as a transformative philosophy for critical consciousness by examining the Freireian methodologies of the organization Thinking Beyond Borders. TBB is a ‘gap-year’ program designed for youth to study international development in 8 countries over 8 months with the goal of questioning assumptions. With the ideological hegemony of classical neoliberal economics increasing inequality through globalization, alternative educational paradigms that promote critical and creative thinking are needed. What can be done within education to cultivate citizens capable of mitigating and transcending the homogenizing tendencies of globalization, nurturing a ‘global …

The Fghog1 Pathway Regulates Hyphal Growth, Stress Responses, And Plant Infection In Fusarium Graminearum., Dawei Zheng, Shijie Zhang, Xiaoying Zhou, Chenfang Wang, Ping Xiang, Qian Zheng, Jin-Rong Xu Nov 2012

The Fghog1 Pathway Regulates Hyphal Growth, Stress Responses, And Plant Infection In Fusarium Graminearum., Dawei Zheng, Shijie Zhang, Xiaoying Zhou, Chenfang Wang, Ping Xiang, Qian Zheng, Jin-Rong Xu

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum is a destructive disease of wheat and barley worldwide. In a previous study of systematic characterization of protein kinase genes in F. graminearum, mutants of three putative components of the osmoregulation MAP kinase pathway were found to have distinct colony morphology and hyphal growth defects on PDA plates. Because the osmoregulation pathway is not known to regulate aerial hyphal growth and branching, in this study we further characterized the functions of the FgHog1 pathway in growth, pathogenesis, and development. The Fghog1, Fgpbs2, and Fgssk2 mutants were all reduced in …

The Effect Of Women’S Intrahousehold Bargaining Power On Child Health Outcomes In Bangladesh, Eleanor M. Schmidt Nov 2012

The Effect Of Women’S Intrahousehold Bargaining Power On Child Health Outcomes In Bangladesh, Eleanor M. Schmidt

Undergraduate Economic Review

Trends in developing economies suggest that as relative female intrahousehold bargaining power improves, consumption preferences favor basic needs which promote child welfare. This study seeks to examine whether greater household bargaining power by Bangladeshi women is related to an improvement the health of their children. Results suggest that certain aspects of bargaining power, including female participation in decision-making about child health care, large household purchases and daily needs, are associated with larger child height-for-age z-scores. There exists a positive correlation between children in families where their mothers have decision-making authority and child health outcomes.

Percutaneous gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement in patients with continuous flow left ventricular assist device. (LVAD). CHRIS RIZZI, BS, Linda Bogar, MD, Jay Jenoff, MD, Nicholas Cavarocchi, MD, Hitoshi Hirose, MD. Department of Surgery, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA. Introduction: Inadequate nutritional support after LVAD placement is known to increase postoperative infections and to decrease survival. The LVAD patients with complicated postoperative recovery requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation may require long-term tube feedings. Placement of a PEG requires knowledge of the location of the LVAD pocket and driveline to avoid device infection and injury. Methods: Between August 2008 and December 2011, 39 …

Method For Early Detection Of Cancers, Hong-Gang Wang, Domenico Coppola Nov 2012

Method For Early Detection Of Cancers, Hong-Gang Wang, Domenico Coppola

USF Patents

The invention includes methods for detecting the presence of a neoplastic condition by comparing a sample level of a BIF-1 to a reference, wherein a low level of BIF-1 in the sample correlates with the presence of a neoplastic condition. Another method involves determining the risk of relapse, tumor recurrence and/or metastasis by determining a sample level of a Bif-1 to a reference level of Bif-1, wherein low sample levels correlate with a likelihood of relapse, recurrence and/or metastasis. Yet another method includes detecting the presence of a pre-neoplastic condition, such as prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia. The method involves measuring a …

Les Femmes Manutentionnaires : Un Point De Vue Biomécanique Et Ergonomique, André Plamondon, Denys Denis, Christian Larivière, Alain Delisle, Denis Gagnon, Marie St-Vincent, Iuliana Nastasia

African American Women: The Face Of Hiv/Aids In Washington, Dc, Ndidiamaka N. Amutah

In 2007, the estimated HIV and AIDS case rates among adult and adolescent African-American females in the United States was 60.6 per 100,000, as compared to 3.3 per 100,000 for adult and adolescent white American females. Women living with HIV or AIDS often face complex social problems that may inhibit them from accessing resources and healthcare services to assist them in coping with the disease. In-depth interviews and direct observations utilizing open-ended note taking were conducted at an HIV service provider’s office to determine the unique needs that develop because of these complex social issues, specifically among HIV positive women …

Decades ago the Federal Government created a system of systems to assist in eradicating extreme poverty, however in 2011 the poverty rate was at its highest rate in almost two decades leaving millions of families and individuals searching for assistance. Given today’s statistics it should not come as a shock that more and more families and individuals have accessed the system and government spending has significantly increased. The deterioration of the safety net has left many lost, looking for answers and for change to happen.

This research study focused on a small community in Brattleboro, Vermont and asked: What are …

INTSORMIL Scientific Publications

Scientists from the INTSORMIL-CENTA project based at the National Center for Agricultural Technology and Forestry (CENTA) of El Salvador have worked for five years to develop varieties of sorghum for grain and forage that are highly nutritious to cattle. Using the gene bmr-12, received from Dr. Gebisa Ejeta of Purdue University, they combined commercial varieties CENTA S-2, S-3 CENTA, CENTA RCV and VG 146 and were able to form new varieties containing this same gene. The first generation created 76 new varieties.
