Moderators Of The Efficacy Of Child Obesity Prevention: Exploration Of A, Sabrina Karczewski
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
School-based child obesity intervention literature demonstrates variable body mass index (BMI) related outcomes, but studies do not typically explore the effect of interventions on psychological outcomes nor do they examine the interactions between participation in the intervention and individual participant characteristics. In this study, the effects of a universal school-based obesity prevention were examined on the outcomes of BMI, internalizing, and externalizing outcomes. Potential moderators of the relationship between participation in the intervention and outcomes included ethnicity, baseline weight class, baseline internalizing symptoms, and baseline externalizing symptoms. Results confirm differential benefits of the intervention based on a variety of baseline …

The Artiodactyl Index At The Origins Of Agriculture In The Northern U.S. Southwest, Cerisa R. Reynolds
The Artiodactyl Index At The Origins Of Agriculture In The Northern U.S. Southwest, Cerisa R. Reynolds
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
People have long argued about the origins of agriculture in the northern U.S. Southwest. While the roles that maize and other plant foods played in early agricultural (Basketmaker II) communities have been frequently investigated, the utilization of faunal resources during this time has not been as thoroughly studied. This issue will be addressed by presenting the results of zooarchaeological analysis conducted on a sample of faunal remains from the Darkmold site, a Basketmaker II site near Durango, Colorado. Using the Artiodactyl Index, these resuls will be compared to sixteen other Basketmaker II sites and will show that the Durango Basketmakers …

Body Mass Index Trends And Nutrition Goals Of College Students Between 2007–2011, Alison L. Lynn
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The incidence of overweight and obesity has become a major public health concern in the United States. The college years are a time during which many dietary and physical activity habits are formed. Health professionals on college campuses have the ability to reach large numbers of people and provide nutrition education to help reduce the rising rates of obesity. The purpose of this study is to examine the body mass index (BMI) trends of college students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, between the years 2007-2011 and to determine the nutrition-related goals of these students. Data was previously collected from NUTR …

Effect Of Six Weeks Of Oral Echinacea Purpurea Supplementation On Nitric Oxide Production, Tyler D. Martin, Michael S. Green, Malcolm T. Whitehead, Timothy P. Scheett, Michael J. Webster, Geoffrey M. Hudson
Faculty Publications
Echinacea purpurea, a purple coneflower plant of the compositae family (Asteraceae), is native to North America and commonly used as an herbal supplement to enhance immune function. Echinacea purpurea has been shown to stimulate macrophage activity which is a known stimulator of nitric oxide (NO) production. Echinacea purpurea supplementation (8,000 mg·d-1) in untrained (42.5 ± 1.6 mL·kg-1·min-1) males was shown to elicit a 63% increase (p < 0.05) in serum erythropoietin (EPO) following two weeks of supplementation. This is supported in part by earlier findings which indicated that four weeks of Echinacea purpurea supplementation demonstrated a non-significant increase in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). It is plausible that Echinacea-induced EPO production may stimulate physiological responses independent of …

Metabolic Syndrome And Migraine., Amit Sachdev, Michael J Marmura
Metabolic Syndrome And Migraine., Amit Sachdev, Michael J Marmura
Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations
Migraine and metabolic syndrome are highly prevalent and costly conditions. The two conditions coexist, but it is unclear what relationship may exist between the two processes. Metabolic syndrome involves a number of findings, including insulin resistance, systemic hypertension, obesity, a proinflammatory state, and a prothrombotic state. Only one study addresses migraine in metabolic syndrome, finding significant differences in the presentation of metabolic syndrome in migraineurs. However, controversy exists regarding the contribution of each individual risk factor to migraine pathogenesis and prevalence. It is unclear what treatment implications, if any, exist as a result of the concomitant diagnosis of migraine and …

Background: Increasing the distribution and use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Sub-Saharan Africa has made controlling malaria with ITNs more practical. We evaluated community effects induced by ITNs, specifically long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), under ordinary conditions in an endemic malaria area of Western Kenya. Methods: Using the database from Mbita Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS), children younger than 5 years old were assessed over four survey periods. We analyzed the effect of bed net usage, LLIN density and population density of young people around a child on all-cause child mortality (ACCM) rates using Cox PH models. Results: During the …

Tissue factor (TF) is a cell-surface glycoprotein responsible for initiating the coagulation cascade. Besides its role in homeostasis, studies have shown the implication of TF in embryonic development, cancer related events, and inflammation via coagulation-dependent and -independent (signaling) mechanisms. Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) plays an important role in regulating TF-initiated blood coagulation. Therefore, transcriptional regulation of TF expression and its physiologic inhibitor TFPI, would allow us to understand the critical step that control many different processes. From a gene profiling study aimed to identify differentially regulated genes between wild type (WT) and p21-activated kinase 1-null (PAK1-KO) mouse embryonic fibroblasts …

Economic Impact Of The Ability Of Nebraska Agriculture To Irrigate: The Case Of 2012, Nebraska Farm Bureau, Decision Innovation Solutions
Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State
With the harsh 2012 growing season behind for Nebraska crop producers, sights are now on the prospects for 2013. An exceptional drought gripped much of the United States from mid-June to the end of the growing season. In many regards, the drought persists in many parts of the country. Without significant moisture accumulations prior to spring planting 2013, drought conditions may continue into next year’s growing season. Since the drought of 2012 became a cause of concern in mid-2012, there have been discussions regarding ways to limit the use of water for agricultural purposes. Many of these discussions will result …

Background: Walking for exercise remains the most frequently reported leisure-time activity, likely because it is simple, inexpensive, and easily incorporated into most people's lifestyle. Pedometers are simple, convenient, and economical tools that can be used to quantify step-determined physical activity. Few studies have attempted to define the direct relationship between dynamic changes in pedometer-determined steps/day and changes in anthropometric and clinical outcomes. Hence, the objective of this secondary analysis was to evaluate the utility of several descriptive indicators of pedometer-determined steps/day for predicting changes in anthropometric and clinical outcomes using data from a community-based walking intervention, HUB City Steps, conducted …

Soybean Allergy: Effect Of Genetic Modification (Gm), Heat And Enzymatic Treatment On Overall Allergenicity, Rakhi Panda
Soybean Allergy: Effect Of Genetic Modification (Gm), Heat And Enzymatic Treatment On Overall Allergenicity, Rakhi Panda
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Soybean allergy affects approximately 0.4% of children worldwide. At least 16 proteins in soybean bind IgE from some soybean allergic subjects. Although the relative allergenic importance and abundance of individual proteins in soybean varieties is not understood, the allergenicity assessment guideline for the safety of genetically modified (GM) food crops (Codex, 2003) includes assessing potential increases in expression of endogenous allergens in an allergenic crop like soybeans that might be due to insertion of the new DNA. The studies described in this dissertation included comparison of binding of IgE from individual soybean allergic subjects to proteins in three transgenic soybean …
