Mood Management Intervention For College Smokers With Elevated Depressive Symptoms: A Pilot Study, Holly E. Schleicher, Kari J. Harris, Duncan G. Campbell, Solomon W. Harrar

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective

This pilot study examined smoking reduction and cessation among college smokers with elevated depressive symptomatology participating in a group-based behavioral counseling, mood management, and motivational enhancement combined intervention (CBT).

Participants & Methods

Fifty-eight smokers (smoked ≥ 6 days in the past 30) were randomized to six sessions of CBT (n=29) or a nutrition-focused attention-matched control group (CG, n=29).

Results

Relative to CG participants, significantly more CBT participants reduced smoking intensity by 50% (χ2(1, N=58)=4.86, p=.028) at end of treatment. Although CBT participants maintained smoking reductions at 3- and 6-month follow-up, group differences were no longer significant. No group differences …

Salmon Aquaculture And Antimicrobial Resistance In The Marine Environment, Alejandro H. Buschmann, Alexandra Tomova, Alejandra Lopez, Miguel A. Maldonado, Luis A. Henriquez, Larisa Ivanova, Fred Moy, Henry P. Godfrey, Felipe C. Cabello

NYMC Faculty Publications

Antimicrobials used in salmon aquaculture pass into the marine environment. This could have negative impacts on marine environmental biodiversity, and on terrestrial animal and human health as a result of selection for bacteria containing antimicrobial resistance genes. We therefore measured the numbers of culturable bacteria and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in marine sediments in the Calbuco Archipelago, Chile, over 12-month period at a salmon aquaculture site approximately 20 m from a salmon farm and at a control site 8 km distant without observable aquaculture activities. Three antimicrobials extensively used in Chilean salmon aquaculture (oxytetracycline, oxolinic acid, and florfenicol) were studied. Although none …

The Village And The City: Imagining And Building Post-Independence India, Ikuno Naka Jan 2012

The Village And The City: Imagining And Building Post-Independence India, Ikuno Naka

Honors Thesis Collection

Since independence in 1947, India has seen the creation of ambitious new postcolonial cities and rural development projects throughout. Underscoring many of these rural and urban planning projects was a new 20th-century understanding of the built environment as being connected to a nation’s society, economy and politics. The redevelopment of India’s built environment was part of a larger utopian project of changing India’s condition of underdevelopment; a means of broadcasting that Nehruvian assumption of nationhood outwards. There were two projects in particular that were pioneers of their time. The first is the redevelopment of the rural agricultural villages of Uttar …

Epigenetics And Obesity: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Research And Treatment, Constance A. Ohlinger Jan 2012

Epigenetics And Obesity: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Research And Treatment, Constance A. Ohlinger

Honors Thesis Collection

Epigenetics is an up and coming field that investigates heritable changes in gene expression that are a result of our environment and, in many cases, our lifestyle and culture. In an effort to look at the current obesity epidemic from multiple disciplines, this thesis encompassed both a biological and an anthropological study. The biological aim was to investigate a possible correlation between lifestyle and the expression of genes related to obesity. The anthropological aim was to investigate mechanisms of lifestyle change and social understandings of epigenetic phenomena. The project resulted in a refined protocol for future multi-disciplinary research into obesity …

Biochar From Agricultural Byproducts For Improved Soil Quality And Carbon Sequestration, Djaafar Rehrah Jan 2012

Biochar From Agricultural Byproducts For Improved Soil Quality And Carbon Sequestration, Djaafar Rehrah

Dissertations

Soil carbon sequestration has emerged as an innovative approach that may offer a low-risk and an efficient way to mitigate climate change and replenish soil fertility. In various agricultural production systems, byproducts are produced in significant amounts from crop residues such as pecan shells (PC), peanut shells (PS), and cotton gin (CG) that can be used to produce biochar and applied to agricultural soil first to sequester C and second to enhance plant growth by supplying and retaining nutrients, improving soil physical and biological properties. The objectives of this study were to (a) produce biochars from different byproducts (PC, PS, …

Do Photoperiodic Changes In Melatonin Secretion Detrimentally Affect The Female Reproductive Cycle?, Riki Szlafrok Jan 2012

Do Photoperiodic Changes In Melatonin Secretion Detrimentally Affect The Female Reproductive Cycle?, Riki Szlafrok

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Melatonin, better known as "the hormone of darkness," is secreted by the pineal gland during the night and helps us fall asleep. Because its internal regulation depends on light, melatonin is part of chronobiology, the study of biological mechanisms and their adaptations to lunar and solar related rhythms (Klein et al. 1991). Therefore, photoperiod changes greatly impact melatonin concentration, influencing changes in neuronal and hormonal mechanisms of the photo neuro-endocrine systems, namely reproduction. Research has shown that a disruption in the circadian rhythm of melatonin due to photoperiod changes detrimentally affects the rhythmic function of the female reproductive cycle. Research …
