Protect Children From Household Food Insecurity: Promote Access To Food And Stress-Alleviating Resources, Maureen M. Black

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Household food insecurity is associated with threats to children’s intellectual, behavioral, and psycho-emotional development. In addition to poor food quality and quantity, the stress associated with food insecurity can undermine caregiver mental health and family functioning. Evidence demonstrates that national assistance programs and policies are needed to ensure that families and children have access to adequate sources of healthy food and to stress-alleviating resources.

Soda Consumption Among Food Insecure Households With Children: A Call To Restructure Food Assistance Policy, Daphne C. Hernandez

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The nutritional problems of food insecurity and obesity co-exist among low-income children. As the reauthorization of SNAP approaches in 2012, it is time to consider the dietary intake of food insecure children and how the SNAP program can assist with improving the nutrition of low-income children, in addition to contributing to reducing the prevalence rates of childhood obesity among food insecure households with children.

Applying An Ecobiodevelopmental Framework To Food Insecurity: More Than Simply Food For Thought, Andrew S. Garner

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Dramatic advances in developmental sciences are beginning to reveal the biological mechanisms underlying well-established associations between early childhood adversity and lifelong measures of limited productivity and poor health. The case studies by Chilton and Rabinowich provide poignant and compelling qualitative data that support an ecobiodevelopmental approach towards understanding and addressing both the complex causes and intergenerational consequences of food insecurity.

Food Insecurity And The Behavioral And Intellectual Development Of Children: A Review Of The Evidence, Rafael Perez-Escamilla, Rodrigo Pinheiro De Toledo Vianna

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Background: Given that an alarming 1 in 5 children in the USA are at risk of hunger (1 in 3 among black and Latino children), and that 3.9 million households with children are food insecure, it is crucial to understand how household food insecurity (HFI) affects the present and future well-being of our children.

Purpose: The objectives of this review article are to: (i) examine the association between HFI and child intellectual, behavioral and psycho-emotional development, controlling for socio-economic indicators; (ii) review the hypothesis that HFI is indeed a mediator of the relationship between poverty and poor child development outcomes; …

Individual, Family, And Neighborhood Characteristics And Children's Food Insecurity, Rachel T. Kimbro, Justin T. Denney, Sarita Panchang

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

A growing body of work documents the influence of neighborhood environments on child health and well-being. Food insecurity is likely linked to neighborhood characteristics via mechanisms of social disadvantage, including access to and availability of healthy foods and the social cohesion of neighbors. In this paper, we utilize restricted, geo-coded data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, which allows us to link individual children with their neighborhood's census characteristics, to assess how the neighborhoods of food secure and food insecure children differ at both the kindergarten level and in third grade. The average food insecure child lives in a neighborhood …

Dietary Intakes Of Children From Food Insecure Households, Jayna Dave, Karen W. Cullen

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The objective of this cross-sectional study is to compare the dietary behaviors of children from low food secure (LFS) households with children from very low food secure (VLFS) households over an entire day, and during meals specifically consumed at home —breakfast, snack, and dinner. Parents of the recruited children completed a demographic questionnaire, along with USDA's 6-item short form food security questionnaire. Children completed 24-hour dietary recalls in person. Complete data from 102 children 9 to 12 years old were used. Using ANOVA to assess the differences among groups in intakes over an entire day and during meals consumed at …

A Multidisciplinary Team Experience With Food Insecurity & Failure To Thrive, Hans B. Kersten, David Bennett Feb 2012

A Multidisciplinary Team Experience With Food Insecurity & Failure To Thrive, Hans B. Kersten, David Bennett

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Food insecurity (FI) affects millions of people in the United States and is associated with medical problems, as well as poorer physical and emotional-behavioral adjustment. Failure to thrive is a condition where children fail to gain an appropriate amount of weight, and it can cause long-term effects on cognitive and psychomotor development. While the extent to which FI may contribute to FTT is unclear, FI may contribute both directly through inadequate caloric or nutrient intake and indirectly through increased family stress, parental depression and a chaotic family environment. We present an overview of how FI and FTT may interact, followed …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Background: Food insecurity may negatively impact children’s nutritional status by affecting parenting quality. Because parents have a strong influence on their children’s eating and food choices, examining the effects of food insecurity on parenting may provide important insights into obesity prevention efforts.

Objectives: This study explored whether food insecurity was associated with parental self-efficacy and parenting practices related to fruit and vegetable consumption.

Methods: Secondary analysis was performed using baseline data from 31 mothers of 5-8 year old overweight or obese children who had participated in a pilot obesity treatment program. Household food security status, fruit and vegetable parental self-efficacy …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

America’s low-income families struggle to protect their children from multiple threats to their health and growth. Many research and advocacy groups explore the health and educational effects of food insecurity, but less is known about these effects on very young children. Children’s HealthWatch, a group of pediatric clinicians and public health researchers, has continuously collected data on the effects of food insecurity alone and in conjunction with other household hardships since 1998. The group’s peer reviewed research has shown that a number of economic risks at the household level, including food, housing and energy insecurity, tend to be correlated. These …

Toxic Stress And Child Hunger Over The Life Course: Three Case Studies, Mariana Chilton, Jenny Rabinowich Feb 2012

Toxic Stress And Child Hunger Over The Life Course: Three Case Studies, Mariana Chilton, Jenny Rabinowich

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The causes and contexts of food insecurity among children in the U.S. are poorly understood because the prevalence of food insecurity at the child level is low compared to the prevalence of household food insecurity. In addition, caregivers may be reluctant to admit their children may not be getting enough food due to shame or fear they might lose custody of their children.

Based on our ongoing qualitative research with mothers of young children, we suggest that food security among children is related to adverse childhood experiences of caregivers. This translates into poor mental and physical health in adolescence and …

Food Insecurity In America: A Call To Action, Jim Weill Feb 2012

Food Insecurity In America: A Call To Action, Jim Weill

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

When 1 in 6 people in the country is living in a food insecure household, that is an outrage. A country as wealthy as ours– wealthy enough to end hunger even in hard times like those we have been experiencing– should not countenance the moral blight of hunger. Those of us who work to reduce and eventually end hunger in this country cannot succeed, however, by making moral arguments alone. What is needed in addition to move voters, policymakers and institutions to act is a strong evidence base that establishes the causes of hunger, the consequences of hunger for individuals …

Doping Control, Mandatory Arbitration, And Process Dangers For Accused Athletes In International Sports , Maureen A. Weston

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Athletes in a professional sports league in the United States are members of players unions, which assist their athletes in obtaining representation when they are involved in dispute resolution proceedings associated with disciplinary actions. However, individual athletes who participate in international competitions do not enjoy the same benefits. When these athletes are required to submit to mandatory drug testing, with attendant potential criminal liability, and to mandatory arbitration, they should be provided meaningful access to competent legal representation when their athletic careers are in jeopardy. This article considers the legal framework, process, and recourse for athletes in international competition to …

Enzyme Therapy In Oncology Care: A Clinical Scholarship Project, Julie Penick Feb 2012

Enzyme Therapy In Oncology Care: A Clinical Scholarship Project, Julie Penick

Dissertations

Studies worldwide indicate that oral enzyme therapy (OET) can prevent or reduce the side effects associated with standard oncology care. Yet use of OET is not common in the United States. The ultimate aim of the proposed project is to improve the quality of life of women with breast cancer who are on standard chemotherapy protocols. Achieving this goal can be facilitated by implementation of the proposed feasibility project designed to: (a) enhance the knowledge of oncology care providers and women with breast cancer on use of OET in conjunction with standard oncology care, (b) assess the attitudes of oncology …
