Addressing Functional Decline And Psychosocial Needs In Hospitalized Elderly, Rebecca A. Porier

Theses and Dissertations

Do hospitalized geriatric patients have better outcomes such as increased patient satisfaction, decreased length of stay, and decreased readmission rates with specialized interdisciplinary care, as on Acute Care of Elders (ACE) units, versus usual care? This is one question that this paper will address. The goal in this type of care is to achieve medical stability while preserving maximum functioning. Collaboration with all health care specialties is crucial to geriatric care . Secondarily, the gap in nursing knowledge of the elderly patient's care needs has to be addressed. Zinc Status In Children With Bronchial Asthma, Tiran Abdulsttar Kakarash, Abbas Al-Rabaty

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract. The rise in asthma and allergic disease among children is a matter of worldwide concern. Many authors have argued that the changes in diet may have been an important determinant of increased susceptibility to asthma. Free radicals have been proposed to be responsible for the pathogenesis of many diseases because of their harmful effects on the cells and tissues. The enzymes responsible for antioxidant defense have trace elements like zinc. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relation between bronchial asthma and zinc serum level, and the relation between serum …

The Impact Of Ict Investments On Development Using The Capability Approach: The Case Of The Nigerian Pre-Paid Electricity Billing System, Salihu Ibrahim-Dasuki, Pamela Abbott, Armin Kashefi Feb 2012

The Impact Of Ict Investments On Development Using The Capability Approach: The Case Of The Nigerian Pre-Paid Electricity Billing System, Salihu Ibrahim-Dasuki, Pamela Abbott, Armin Kashefi

The African Journal of Information Systems

Most existing ICT for development (ICT4D) literature tends to focus mainly on design, transfer and implementation issues. There is limited focus on the impact of ICT projects on development and little concrete analysis of these initiatives in terms of their long-term developmental impact. In this paper, we use Sen’s notion of capabilities as an evaluative space for ICT project assessment. We employed the freedom concepts of the capability approach to focus on the developmental impact of such projects. We based our evaluation on the Pre-paid Electricity Billing system in Nigeria. Our analysis shows that the pre-paid system failed to fully …

Intentional Weight Loss And Dose Reductions Of Anti-Diabtetic Medications: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Anita Ashok Kumar, Ghanshyam Palamaner Subash Shantha, Scott Kahan, Rohit Joshua Samson, Nelson David Boddu, Lawrence Jay Cheskin Feb 2012

Intentional Weight Loss And Dose Reductions Of Anti-Diabtetic Medications: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Anita Ashok Kumar, Ghanshyam Palamaner Subash Shantha, Scott Kahan, Rohit Joshua Samson, Nelson David Boddu, Lawrence Jay Cheskin

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Background and Aim

Intentional weight loss, primarily by improving insulin resistance, is known to decrease the need for anti-diabetic medications. In this study, we assess the magnitude of weight loss that resulted in dose reductions or discontinuation of anti-diabetic medications in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes (DM) undergoing weight loss treatment.

Methods

Case records of 50 overweight or obese patients with DM who successfully decreased dosage or discontinued diabetes medications after losing weight via attendance at two University-based, outpatient weight management centers were analyzed. Follow-up visits, weight reduction interventions, and decisions for dose reductions or discontinuation of …

Blood Glucose Monitoring And Metabolic Control In Youth With Type 1 Diabetes: Relation To Disease Care, Adrienne Borschuk Feb 2012

Blood Glucose Monitoring And Metabolic Control In Youth With Type 1 Diabetes: Relation To Disease Care, Adrienne Borschuk

Theses and Dissertations

Better disease care behaviors in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are strongly related to better metabolic control (HbA1c). However, HbA1c results are only available, on average, every three months, and may not accurately capture intricacies of blood glucose fluctuations. Youth then must rely on blood glucose levels obtained throughout the day to determine which disease care behaviors to perform to maintain optimal metabolic control. Youth may have difficulty performing these disease care behaviors properly or consistently, which makes parental monitoring a crucial aspect of the diabetes regimen. Additionally, youth who experience frequent or severe hypoglycemia may develop a fear …

Firearms, Youth Homicide, And Public Health, Robert S. Levine, Irwin Goldzweig, Barbara Kilbourne, Paul Juarez Feb 2012

Firearms, Youth Homicide, And Public Health, Robert S. Levine, Irwin Goldzweig, Barbara Kilbourne, Paul Juarez

Sociology Faculty Research

Homicide is seven times as common among U.S. non-Hispanic Black as among non-Hispanic White youth ages 15 to 24 years. In 83% of these youth homicides, the murder weapon is a firearm. Yet, for more than a decade, the national public health position on youth violence has been largely silent about the role of firearms, and tools used by public health professionals to reduce harm from other potential hazards have been unusable where guns are concerned. This deprives already underserved populations from the full benefits public health agencies might be able to deliver. In part, political prohibitions against research about …
