The Third Step—The National “What We Eat In America” Survey, Rosalie Marion Bliss, Alanna J. Moshfegh
Agricultural Research Magazine
In 2010, landmark health legislation— the Affordable Care Act—was passed, leading to a national strategy crossing both private and public sectors and led by the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council of the Surgeon General. The plan is called the “National Prevention Strategy.”
Science-based dietary-intake data from the Agricultural Research Service provides a key foundation for multiple public health policy publications, including the council’s strategy report, published in June 2011. The report cites the ARS national dietary-intake survey data to underscore the ability of everyday people to improve their health through healthy eating and other preventive measures.

The Second Step—Conservators Of The National Nutrient Database, Rosalie Marion Bliss, Joanne Holden
Agricultural Research Magazine
For more than 115 years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has provided data on the nutrient composition of foods in the American diet. Over time, a series of USDA institutions responsible for providing this data evolved, and today the data comes from the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center (BHNRC), part of USDA’s Agricultural Research Service.
“Our mission is to ensure that science based nutrient profiles exist for the U.S. food supply,” says nutritionist and research leader Joanne Holden, who heads the Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL) at the nutrition center, which is located in Beltsville, Maryland. “We work with other BHNRC, …

Salt has become one of a handful of sensitive nutrients in the public spotlight, according to major food company executives who attended the 2011 National Nutrient Databank Conference in Bethesda, Maryland. The conference is supported annually by the Agricultural Research Service’s Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL) and Food Surveys Research Group (FSRG) and other organizations. Both ARS groups are part of the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland.
Salting is an ancient food-preservation practice still in use today to help preserve some foods. While salt-cured country hams and corned beef are still crowd pleasers, 80 percent of our dietary …

Abstract
The objective of this project was to determine if increased stress levels could affect morbidity and mortality rates in calves. The source for this study was a group of 132 calves at the Cal Poly Dairy available for observation. For each test day, calves were scored on a scale of 1-3 based on how stressed the calf was. After all the data were collected, relationships between age, sex, breed, and observation day were determined in SAS using a Proc Probit method. The effects of breed and sex were not significant in the analysis. However, one of the observation days …

Us Foreign Policy During The Nixon And Ford Administrations, Rachael S. Murdock
Us Foreign Policy During The Nixon And Ford Administrations, Rachael S. Murdock
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Most studies of US involvement in Chile in the early 1970s center around the debate over the degree of responsibility of the Nixon Administration compared to internal pressures that instigated the 1973 military coup that ousted Salvador Allende. Rather than attempting to assess the degree of US responsibility for the coup, this thesis explores the motivations and contributing factors that first led to the decision to deepen US involvement in Chilean politics via the CIA in the lead up to the 1970 presidential election, to continue to work against the government of Salvador Allende after his election by the Chilean …

Background
The National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference proposed the term “overlap” graft-versus-host disease to describe the situation when both acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease are present.
Design and Methods
We examined whether the overlap subtype of graft-versus-host disease was associated with a different prognosis, functional limitations, or patient-reported outcomes compared to “classic” chronic graft-versus-host disease without any acute features.
Results
Prospective data were collected from 427 patients from nine centers. Patients were classified as having overlap (n=352) or classic chronic (n=75) graft-versus-host disease based on reported organ involvement. Overlap …

The Welfare Of Animals In The Foie Gras Industry
The Welfare Of Animals In The Foie Gras Industry
Agribusiness Reports
The production of pâté de foie gras involves force-feeding ducks and geese by placing a long tube down the birds’ esophagi and pumping an unnatural quantity of food directly into their stomachs. Force-feeding induces hepatic lipidosis and causes the birds’ livers to become diseased and enlarged. Substantial scientific evidence suggests that force-feeding can cause pain and injury from feeding tube insertion, fear and stress during capture and handling, gait abnormality due to distended livers, pathologies in liver function, and increased mortality. Force-feeding birds to produce foie gras is detrimental to their welfare.

Analyzing The Correlation Between Overall Likeness And Emotional Responses Before And After The Consumption Of Dairy Beverages, Jessica L. Weber
Dairy Science
In today’s food industry there is a need for more research on the correlation between likeness of a product and what kind of emotional response this may lead to. This has potential to allow the food industry to understand consumer purchase intent and use the data collected from specific studies to gain more insight to repeat purchases. The objectives of this study were to understand more about the relationship between overall likeness of dairy beverage products from initial taste to ending taste as well as how these responses related to the emotional responses of the consumption experience. In two geographical …
