The Relationship Between Rumination And Milk Yield In Early Lactating Holsteins And Jerseys, Jason Borges

Dairy Science

The objective of this study is to determine if there is a direct relationship between rumination and energy corrected milk produced, using a technologic rumination tracking system. This technology is better known as AI24™ and is produced by Micro Dairy Logic: Advanced Dairy Solutions and SCR™, but marketed through Semex. The collar system is able to track rumination, aid in diagnosing illness/injury, predict parturition, and detect estrus in cows. The sophisticated electronic tag monitors a cow’s rumination time, chewing rhythm and time between feed boluses to determine how many minutes per day the cow is ruminating. Each collar is equipped …

Determining Immunoglobulin Transfer And The Relationship To Calf Health At Cal Poly Dairy Through The Assessment Of Serum Protein Concentration, Kevin M. Mcevilly

Dairy Science

The objective of this study was to determine the success of current calf management protocols at the Cal Poly dairy by measuring Immunoglobulin (Ig) uptake at 48-hours post-partum, and by following mortality rate through weaning. By measuring serum protein concentrate (SPC) and using it as a direct indicator of Ig uptake we were able to grade the rate of passive immunity. Serum protein concentrate levels were obtained using a refractometer, and were measured in degrees Brix (°Bx). Blood samples were acquired via jugular venipuncture at the 48-hour mark from a mixed breed, mixed gender sample comprised of both Holstein and …

Conformational Melding Permits A Conserved Binding Geometry In Tcr Recognition Of Foreign And Self Molecular Mimics, Oleg Y. Borbulevych, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian M. Baker

Food for Health: Publications

Molecular mimicry between foreign and self antigens is a mechanism of T cell receptor cross reactivity and is thought to contribute to the development of autoimmunity. The αβ TCR A6 recognizes the foreign antigen Tax from the virus HTLV-1 when presented by the class I MHC HLA-A2. In a possible link with the autoimmune disease HAM/TSP, A6 also recognizes a self peptide from the neuronal protein HuD in the context of HLA-A2. We found here that the complexes of the HuD and Tax epitopes with HLA-A2 are close but imperfect structural mimics, and that in contrast with other recent structures …

A total of 220 lactic acid bacteria isolates were screened for antifungal activity using Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger as the target strains. Four Lactobacillus strains exhibited strong inhibitory activity on agar surfaces. All four were also identified as having strong inhibitory activity against the human pathogenic fungi Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum and Epidermophyton floccosum. One of the four lactobacilli, namely Lb. reuteri ee1p exhibited the most inhibition against dermatophytes. Cell-free culture supernatants of Lb. reuteri ee1p and of the non-antifungal Lb. reuteri M13 were freeze-dried and used to access and compare antifungal activity in agar plate assays …

Protecting Pakistan's Health During The Global Economic Crisis, Rashid Jooma, A Khan, A A. Khan

Section of Neurosurgery

The world is facing an unprecedented global economic crisis, with many countries needing to reconsider their level of health care spending. This paper explores the many consequences of the global economic turndown on Pakistan's health, including reduced government and donor spending and increased poverty with the consequent diversion of funds away from health. Nevertheless, these challenges may provide opportunities not only to mitigate the adverse effects of the economic crisis but also to institute some much-needed reforms that may not receive political support during more affluent times. Our suggestions focus on setting priorities based on the national disease burden, prioritizing …

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Gulzar Salman Amlani Mar 2012

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Gulzar Salman Amlani

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Acute renal failure refers to sudden deterioration in biochemical and physiological functioning of kidneys and often associated with multi organ failure. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) holds special significance for the treatment of renal failure due to a variety of factors. It is believed that CRRT helps in restoration of acid-base imbalances and electrolyte abnormalities. Along with that, with gradual solute removal, it ensures haemodynamic stability and prevents the risk of cerebral oedema in neurosurgery patients. Besides this, several studies have supported that CRRT enables practitioners to adjust drug dosages and prevent drug accumulation and overdose. In addition, gradual removal …

On Growth And Development: Housing Environment Impacts On Children's Development And Its Relevance In Interior Design Solutions, Karyn Mckey-Paz

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The role of housing quality and housing location in children’s development are of great importance, as these issues may affect their outcomes later in life. Housing and neighborhood conditions include but are not limited to housing costs, residential layout, and neighborhood surroundings. These characteristics could determine whether or not the physical condition of the house is healthy and safe, and if the neighborhood in which the house is located is free from danger, all of which have an effect on their development.

This research paper goes into a detailed examination of how the characteristics of children’s home and neighborhood conditions …

A Case Study Of The Effects On Academic Achievement Of An After School Program In Paterson, New Jersey, Sebastian S. Calabria Mar 2012

A Case Study Of The Effects On Academic Achievement Of An After School Program In Paterson, New Jersey, Sebastian S. Calabria

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The past decade has seen an increase in the interest in after school programs, especially in urban communities throughout the United States. Community leaders, educational officials, and parents have identified after school programs as one solution to children's unsupervised hours between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Although such school-based programs suggest the transformation of schools into babysitting agencies, research supports the usefulness of structured after school programs in improvement of student achievement especially for socioeconomically deprived, at-risk children. In addition, many after school programs have been designed to reduce violence, crime by youth, and drug use in the community. The …
