A Religion Problem: Classification And The Pathologizing Of The Religio-Political Other, Sabatino Dibernardo Oct 2012

A Religion Problem: Classification And The Pathologizing Of The Religio-Political Other, Sabatino Dibernardo

Northeast Popular Culture Association

In the current political climate, a glance at the nightly news shows from across the political spectrum will confront the viewer with various cultural conflicts—“wars”—being waged against, for example, women, the poor, the wealthy, the middle and working class(es), unions, marriage, drugs, and religion, among others. This paper will focus on one of these cultural conflicts: the “problem of (and war on) religion” and the appropriation of religious rhetoric as a political weapon of classification and pathologization of the religio-political other. The (video) text under analysis comes from The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell in a segment called The Rewrite …

Transforming Womanhood In Louisa Ermelino’S The Sisters Mallone, Rosa De Angelis Oct 2012

Transforming Womanhood In Louisa Ermelino’S The Sisters Mallone, Rosa De Angelis

Most Italians thought of themselves, and some still do, in terms of provincial identities. In America, they tended to settle in large Italian colonies, duplicating the customs and traditions of their particular Italian town or village (Mangione and Morreale 130). So it was not unusual for people from one particular town or village to be housed in one tenement or on one block. Family and their village of origin were very important. Everything in their lives was based on one or the other, for those were the things that provided safety and security. Home and family were the only respites …

Sharing Strangers’: Strangers In The Village, Lois Ascher Oct 2012

Sharing Strangers’: Strangers In The Village, Lois Ascher

Northeast Popular Culture Association

The idea of strangers in American culture is not a new one. While they tolerated them for their manpower, early 17th Century Puritans referred to Anglican and non-religious settlers as “strangers”. The later arrival of Baptists, Lutherans, and the “dreaded” Quakers was also grudgingly tolerated. But Puritan tolerance was limited in the same manner of later generations who privileged certain groups of immigrants, mostly Anglo people, while barricading American shores against less “desirable” groups, a policy which resulted in the Emergency Immigration Acts of 1921 & 1924. No matter the need, Catholics, Jews and “infidels” (Native Americans) were never …

When The Abyss Looks Back: Treatments Of Human Trafficking In Superhero Comic Books, Bond Benton, Daniela Peterka-Benton

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Superhero comic book characters have historically engaged issues of social concern. From Superman’s opposition to the Ku Klux Klan in 1947 (Bowers, 2011) to Captain America’s acceptance of a gay soldier in 1982 (Witt, Sherry, & Marcus, 1995) to Batman’s stance against landmines in 1996 (O’Neil, 1996), stories involving superheroes have frequently demonstrated a developed social awareness on national and international problems. Given that the audience for superhero characters is often composed of young people, this engagement has served as a vehicle for raising understanding of issues and as tool for encouraging activism on the part of readers (McAllister, 1992; …

State Medical Reimbursement Lawsuits After Tobacco: Is The Domino Effect For Lead Paint Manufacturers And Others Fair Game? , Richard L. Cupp Jr.

Pepperdine Law Review

In 1998 the tobacco industry reached a settlement with the government for $246 billion. The massive size and scope of the states' tobacco settlement will inevitably exert a powerful influence on tort litigation for decades. The proliferation of copycat lawsuits, such as lead paint claims, seeking to emulate the spectacular success of the tobacco lawsuits will be one of the first aftershocks. The appropriate legislative response to this copycat litigation is to enact legislation limiting mass tort claims by states and other government entities. Because politics and economics may be influencing the filing of these lawsuits, rather than a purer …
