Syngas Impurity Effects On Cell Growth, Enzymatic Activities And Ethanol Production Via Fermentation, Deshun Xu Oct 2012

Syngas Impurity Effects On Cell Growth, Enzymatic Activities And Ethanol Production Via Fermentation, Deshun Xu

Theses and Dissertations

A syngas compositional database with focus on trace impurities was established. For this work, ammonia (NH3) and benzene (C6H6) effects on cell growth, enzymatic activities of hydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and product formation were studied. NH3, after entering media, will be converted rapidly to NH4+, which will raise the total osmolarity of the media. NH3, as a common nutrient for the cell growth, is not the real culprit for cell growth inhibition. In essence, it is the high osmolarity resulting from the accumulation of NH4+ in the media which disrupts the normal regulation of the cells. It was concluded …

Molecular Subdivision Of The Marine Diatom Thalassiosira Rotula In Relation To Geographic Distribution, Genome Size, And Physiology, Kerry A. Whittaker, Dayna R. Rignanese, Robert J. Olson, Tatiana A. Rynearson Oct 2012

Molecular Subdivision Of The Marine Diatom Thalassiosira Rotula In Relation To Geographic Distribution, Genome Size, And Physiology, Kerry A. Whittaker, Dayna R. Rignanese, Robert J. Olson, Tatiana A. Rynearson

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Background:

Marine phytoplankton drift passively with currents, have high dispersal potentials and can be comprised of morphologically cryptic species. To examine molecular subdivision in the marine diatom Thalassiosira rotula, variations in rDNA sequence, genome size, and growth rate were examined among isolates collected from the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean basins. Analyses of rDNA included T. gravida because morphological studies have argued that T. rotula and T. gravida are conspecific.

Results:

Culture collection isolates of T. gravida and T. rotula diverged by 7.0 ± 0.3% at the ITS1 and by 0.8 ± 0.03% at the 28S. Within T. rotula, field …

Relationships Among Acculturation, Self-Positivity Bias, Stigma, And Condom Use In A Sample Of Urban College Students, Molly Neff Oct 2012

Relationships Among Acculturation, Self-Positivity Bias, Stigma, And Condom Use In A Sample Of Urban College Students, Molly Neff

Theses and Dissertations

Despite an increase in interventions targeted at lowering the rate of HIV/AIDS among college students, the rate of HIV/AIDS infections has not decreased. The purpose of this study was to identify factors (i.e., HIV-sexual knowledge, self-positivity bias, peer norms, acculturation, perceived risk of HIV, HIV-related stigma, and condom use) that may affect condom use among college students who live in an area where the prevalence of HIV is relatively high. The current study utilized a sexually active sample (N=397) of diverse college students (predominantly African American and White) in an urban setting to examine the relationships. Path analysis was used …

Interview With Gloria De La Rosa, Gloria De La Rosa, California State University, Monterey Bay

Chinatown Renewal Project

Raised by her grandparents, Ms. Gloria De La Rosa learned about hard work at a very young age. At nine years old, every summer until she was seventeen years old, she was working in the fields along with her grandparents later joined by her sisters and parents. Gloria describes her experiences as a fieldworker and thus provides us with insight into the life of a fieldworker. Gloria also discusses the harsh working conditions that fieldworkers had to abide by before any changes were brought by Cesar Chavez who she is very thankful for. Gloria also describes the uplifting spirit of …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

The type VI secretion system (T6SS) mediates protein translocation across the cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, including Vibrio cholerae - the causative agent of cholera. All V. cholerae strains examined to date harbor gene clusters encoding a T6SS. Structural similarity and sequence homology between components of the T6SS and the T4 bacteriophage cell-puncturing device suggest that the T6SS functions as a contractile molecular syringe to inject effector molecules into prokaryotic and eukaryotic target cells. Regulation of the T6SS is critical. A subset of V. cholerae strains, including the clinical O37 serogroup strain V52, express T6SS constitutively. In contrast, pandemic strains …

Effects Of The Master Settlement Agreement On Smoking Among Nevada Teens: A Decade After Implementation And Implications Of Reduced Funding, Christina A. Demopoulos, Christopher R. Cochran Oct 2012

Effects Of The Master Settlement Agreement On Smoking Among Nevada Teens: A Decade After Implementation And Implications Of Reduced Funding, Christina A. Demopoulos, Christopher R. Cochran

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Background: Tobacco control programs that have adapted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Best Practices for a Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program (CTCP) have been effective in reducing the rates of tobacco use. This paper investigates the effectiveness that Nevada’s tobacco control programs have had on teen tobacco use and rates to date and examines changes to programs given reduced Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) funding.

Methods: Aggregate data from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services/Fund for a Healthy Nevada program was analyzed to determine if the tobacco control programs adapted the CDC’s Best Practices for a CTCP. …
