The Digital Age: What’S Ahead For Magazines And Newspapers?, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Recent reports that the historic publication Newsweek magazine would release its final print edition in December and switch to an all-digital format in 2013, reinstates the question: What will the future hold for magazines and newspapers in the ever-changing world of technology? Ongoing changes in these fields have caused colleges to rethink how they educate their students. Gardner-Webb University’s Dr. Joseph Webb, professor of Journalism in the Communication Studies department, recently addressed these emerging issues.

Functionalization Of In-Plane Photonic Microcantilever Arrays For Biosensing Applications, Stanley J. Ness Oct 2012

Functionalization Of In-Plane Photonic Microcantilever Arrays For Biosensing Applications, Stanley J. Ness

Theses and Dissertations

Microcantilevers have been investigated as high sensitivity, label free biosensors for approximately 15 years. In nearly all cases, a thin gold film deposited on the microcantilevers is used as an intermediate attachment layer because of the convenience of thiol-gold chemistry. Unfortunately, this attachment chemistry can be unstable when used with complex sample media such as blood plasma. The Nordin group at BYU has recently developed an all-silicon in-plane photonic microcantilever (PMCL) technology to serve as a platform for label-free biosensing. It has the advantage of being readily scalable to simultaneous readout of many PMCLs in array format, and allows integration …

Flickr Images: What & Why Museums Share, Joan E. Beaudoin, CéCile Bosshard Oct 2012

Flickr Images: What & Why Museums Share, Joan E. Beaudoin, CéCile Bosshard

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This paper presents the results of a study which explored the use of Flickr by cultural heritage institutions. The study examined two aspects of museums’ use of Flickr: the content of images posted by museums, and the reasons behind sharing their images to the social media site. Images were categorized by the researchers into nine classes based on their visible content, and a brief questionnaire was used to gather data about the image sharing process from museum personnel. The findings reveal that imagery of people visiting the museum and taking part in museum events predominated in the total number of …

Underpotential Deposition Of Copper On Pt(S)[N(100)X(110)] Stepped Surfaces, Gisbert Rubn, Climent Vctor, Herrero Enrique, M. Feliu Juan Oct 2012

Underpotential Deposition Of Copper On Pt(S)[N(100)X(110)] Stepped Surfaces, Gisbert Rubn, Climent Vctor, Herrero Enrique, M. Feliu Juan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The underpotential deposition of Cu on platinum stepped surfaces composed of (100) terraces and (110) monoatomic steps has been studied in different acidic solutions. It has been found that the initial stage of copper deposition on the surface takes place simultaneously on terrace and step sites, irrespective of the nature of the adsorbing anion. During the voltammetric deposition of a full monolayer, several peaks can be observed. The analysis of the dependence of the peak charge with the step density allows assigning the different peaks to different deposition sites. The peak appearing at most positive potentials corresponds to the deposition …

The Importance Of Psychoanalytic Feminism To Post-Feminism: Sucker Punch, Chelsea Daggett Oct 2012

The Importance Of Psychoanalytic Feminism To Post-Feminism: Sucker Punch, Chelsea Daggett

Northeast Popular Culture Association

In the move to post-feminism many questions raised by earlier feminist texts were left unanswered, despite their continuing relevance to the current media landscape. Films featuring female characters, especially females behaving outside of typical gender roles, are still criticized for a variety of reasons that are directly addressed by earlier theories of feminism and their continuing influence on mainstream culture. The 2011 action film, Sucker Punch, was about women reacting to their oppression through a series of empowering fantasies that ultimately change their lives for the better. However, the film has been widely rejected by critics as a piece of …

Leverage And Alcohol Addiction, Tom Gallagher Oct 2012

Leverage And Alcohol Addiction, Tom Gallagher

Northeast Popular Culture Association

This paper confronts the question of whether messages can be diluted or even contradicted by the format in which they are delivered through a textual analysis of the TNT procedural drama Leverage, examining the portrayal of alcoholism in the program. The procedural drama, which often focuses on figures in law and order occupations, is characterized by close-ended episodes that often feature happy endings. Alcohol addiction has been a staple of many television programs, but these programs were mostly comedies or serial dramas. Leverage, a procedural drama with a light touch, is a modern day Robin Hood tale focused on five …

I Can Haz An Internet Aesthetic?!? Lolcats And The Digital Marketplace, Leah Shafer Oct 2012

I Can Haz An Internet Aesthetic?!? Lolcats And The Digital Marketplace, Leah Shafer

Northeast Popular Culture Association

This paper presents my preliminary research on LOLcats and viral cat videos: their global popularity; their invocation and reconfiguration of key analytical categories in film, television, and new media aesthetics; the ways that their circulation does and does not engender community within a fragmented media landscape; and, their silly, furry goodness. I am primarily interested in the way that LOLcat memes and viral cat videos situate an aesthetic analysis of Internet objects within questions of spectacle, flow, and exhibition practice particularly as these questions raise issues for feminist media critique.

The Phantom Of The Opera: Spectacular Musical Or Archetypal Story?, Patricia Drumright Oct 2012

The Phantom Of The Opera: Spectacular Musical Or Archetypal Story?, Patricia Drumright

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Although the story of The Phantom of the Opera originated about 100 years ago, today’s audiences are more likely to be familiar with—and even “phans” of—the musical adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which has become famous since its début in London in 1986. Considering that the theatrical version has received international acclaim and enjoys worldwide popularity—and considering that Gaston Leroux’s novel has merited scores of adaptations in the last century—surprisingly little scholarship exists on these various works. This exploratory essay addresses the popularity of The Phantom of the Opera (especially over the last 25 years) as well as its greater …

Picturing The Enemy: The Construction Of The Islamic Other In Post 9/11 Comic Anthologies, Lindsey M. Hanlon Oct 2012

Picturing The Enemy: The Construction Of The Islamic Other In Post 9/11 Comic Anthologies, Lindsey M. Hanlon

Northeast Popular Culture Association

In my paper entitled “Picturing the Enemy: The Construction of the Islamic Other in Post-9/11 Comic Anthologies,” I argue that the philanthropic comic collections created shortly after the September 11th attacks provide an ideal opportunity to explore the cultural constructions of the Islamic Other in the post-9/11 period. In this paper, I will examine three comic anthologies released shortly after 9/11: 9-11: Artists Respond published by DC Comics’ subsidiary Dark Horse Comics, 9-11: September 11th 2001 published by DC Comics, and 9-11: Emergency Relief published by Alternative Comics. These comic collections represent an urge to create and commemorate …

Bert The Turtle Won't Save You: American Science Fiction Prose And Criticism Of Nuclear Civil Defense During The 1950s, Cory Matieyshen Oct 2012

Bert The Turtle Won't Save You: American Science Fiction Prose And Criticism Of Nuclear Civil Defense During The 1950s, Cory Matieyshen

Northeast Popular Culture Association

During the early 1950s (the “Bert the Turtle” era of nuclear civil defense planning), federal civil defense authorities in the United States chose to all but ignore the effects of radiation in an effort to portray nuclear weapons as large conventional weapons. The focus of civil defense planning changed from protection from blast and heat to evacuation and, finally, home fallout shelters in the face of increasing weapons capability and knowledge of the effects of nuclear weapons over the course of the 1950s. This paper examines how changes in civil defense planning and assumptions are reflected in five examples of …

Out On A Wing: Reading Frontier Field, Joseph Price Oct 2012

Out On A Wing: Reading Frontier Field, Joseph Price

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Beyond the seemingly obvious historical, architectural, and situational aspects of a ballpark, what are other dimensions that can be routinely explored or perspectives that can be repeatedly adopted to read a ballpark? Drawing inspiration from Mortimer Adler’s classic How to Read a Book and following the insight of semiologist Christian Metz, who questioned the notion that the meaning of films is transparent, I correspondingly note that a ballpark “is difficult to explain because it is so easy to understand.” Simply, while its design and purpose appear to be forthright—to situate baseball games and to orient fans’ views—a ballpark evades easy …

The Role Of Case-Hardening In The Development And Preservation Of Narrow, Vertical-Walled Canyons In Adršpach-Teplice, Czech Republic, Shawn Austin Wiggins Oct 2012

The Role Of Case-Hardening In The Development And Preservation Of Narrow, Vertical-Walled Canyons In Adršpach-Teplice, Czech Republic, Shawn Austin Wiggins

Theses and Dissertations

The geomorphology at Adršpach-Teplice, Czech Republic is dominated by vertical-walled, fracture-controlled features including slot canyons, gorges and pillars. Surfaces of canyon walls in Adršpach are case-hardened and more resistant to erosion than the bulk of the sandstone, which appears to be fundamental to the formation and preservation of canyons. Core and whole rock samples from Adršpach-Teplice were analyzed in thin section, including SEM analysis with cathodo luminescence. XRF and XRD analyses indicated that silica case-hardened surfaces are chemically and mineralogically similar to the rock interior, while iron case-hardened surfaces have an increase in iron present at the surface as the …
