Liquid-Flooded Compression And Expansion In Scroll Machines – Part I: Model Development, Ian Bell, Vincent Lemort, Eckhard Groll, James E. Braun, Galen King, W. Travis Horton Nov 2012

Liquid-Flooded Compression And Expansion In Scroll Machines – Part I: Model Development, Ian Bell, Vincent Lemort, Eckhard Groll, James E. Braun, Galen King, W. Travis Horton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

A detailed mechanistic model has been developed for scroll compressors and scroll expanders with liquid flooding for application to the Liquid Flooded Ericsson Cycle. This model is based on the integration of a set of differential equations that arise from the conservation laws. The impact of the flooding liquid on the working process is also included through mixture properties as well as treatment of two-phase flow pressure drop. With the working process known, it is then possible to solve for the compressor power, total mass flow rate and other model outputs. The fine level of detail in the model allows …

Optimization Of A Scroll Compressor For Liquid Flooding, Ian Bell, E. A. Groll, James E. Braun, Galen King, W. Travis Horton Nov 2012

Optimization Of A Scroll Compressor For Liquid Flooding, Ian Bell, E. A. Groll, James E. Braun, Galen King, W. Travis Horton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In two companion papers, simulation models for the working processes of liquid-flooded scroll compressors and expanders have been developed and validated against experimental data. In this study, analytic models are presented for the modes of irreversibility generation in the liquid-flooded scroll compressor including built-in volume ratio maladjustment, pressure drop and leakage. A thermodynamic model is used to derive the ideal volume ratio for a liquid-flooded compressor, which is higher than that of dry compression. An optimum set of built-in volume ratio and scroll base circle radius is found which maximizes the overall isentropic efficiency by minimizing the leakage and pressure …

Automatic Generation Of Provably Correct Embedded Systems, Shang-Wei Lin, Yang Liu, Pao-Ann Hsiung, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Nov 2012

Automatic Generation Of Provably Correct Embedded Systems, Shang-Wei Lin, Yang Liu, Pao-Ann Hsiung, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the demand for new and complicated features, embedded systems are becoming more and more difficult to design and verify. Even if the design of a system is verified, how to guarantee the consistency between the design and its implementation remains a big issue. As a solution, we propose a framework that can help a system designer to model his or her embedded system using a high-level modeling language, verify the design of the system, and automatically generate executable software codes whose behavior semantics are consistent with that of the high-level model. We use two case studies to demonstrate the …

More Anti-Chain Based Refinement Checking, Ting Wang, Songzheng Song, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Xinyu Wang, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Refinement checking plays an important role in system verification. It establishes properties of an implementation by showing a refinement relationship between the implementation and a specification. Recently, it has been shown that anti-chain based approaches increase the efficiency of trace refinement checking significantly. In this work, we study the problem of adopting anti-chain for stable failures refinement checking, failures-divergence refinement checking and probabilistic refine checking (i.e., a probabilistic implementation against a non-probabilistic specification). We show that the first two problems can be significantly improved, because the state space of the product model may be reduced dramatically. Though applying anti-chain for …

A Generalized Cluster Centroid Based Classifier For Text Categorization, Guansong Pang, Shengyi Jiang Nov 2012

A Generalized Cluster Centroid Based Classifier For Text Categorization, Guansong Pang, Shengyi Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, a Generalized Cluster Centroid based Classifier (GCCC) and its variants for text categorization are proposed by utilizing a clustering algorithm to integrate two wellknown classifiers, i.e., the K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) classifier and the Rocchio classifier. KNN, a lazy learning method, suffers from inefficiency in online categorization while achieving remarkable effectiveness. Rocchio, which has efficient categorization performance, fails to obtain an expressive categorization model due to its inherent linear separability assumption. Our proposed method mainly focuses on two points: one point is that we use a clustering algorithm to strengthen the expressiveness of the Rocchio model; another one is …

Cross-View Graph Embedding, Zhiwu Huang, S. Shan, H. Zhang, S. Lao, X. Chen Nov 2012

Cross-View Graph Embedding, Zhiwu Huang, S. Shan, H. Zhang, S. Lao, X. Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, more and more approaches are emerging to solve the cross-view matching problem where reference samples and query samples are from different views. In this paper, inspired by Graph Embedding, we propose a unified framework for these cross-view methods called Cross-view Graph Embedding. The proposed framework can not only reformulate most traditional cross-view methods (e.g., CCA, PLS and CDFE), but also extend the typical single-view algorithms (e.g., PCA, LDA and LPP) to cross-view editions. Furthermore, our general framework also facilitates the development of new cross-view methods. In this paper, we present a new algorithm named Cross-view Local Discriminant Analysis (CLODA) …

My observations attempt to describe the evolution of this dynamic agency, its procedures for regulation and evaluation, and what role it plays in the community. My recommendations are …

A Quantitative Content Analysis Of The Common Core State Standards Compared To Missouri’S Grade-Level Expectations Using The Revised Bloom’S Taxonomy Framework, Toni Gallia Nov 2012

A Quantitative Content Analysis Of The Common Core State Standards Compared To Missouri’S Grade-Level Expectations Using The Revised Bloom’S Taxonomy Framework, Toni Gallia

Dissertations

With the pressure in education to develop a 21st century learner with higher-level thinking skills, many educators connected previous state curriculum to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Missouri’s Department of Education experts paired the previous state’s curriculum known as the Missouri Grade Level Expectations (MO GLEs) with a corresponding CCSS based on Webb’s depth-of-knowledge model in a document commonly referred to as the Missouri Crosswalk. This quantitative content analysis study compared the MO GLEs and CCSS by quantifying the language using an adapted and revised Bloom’s taxonomy framework. This study tested for a cognitive difference in means and for …

Firstlight: Pluggable Optical Interconnect Technologies For Polymeric Electro-Optical Printed Circuit Boards In Data Centers, J Graham-Jones Nov 2012

Firstlight: Pluggable Optical Interconnect Technologies For Polymeric Electro-Optical Printed Circuit Boards In Data Centers, J Graham-Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The protocol data rate governing data storage devices will increase to over 12 Gb/s by 2013 thereby imposing unmanageable cost and performance burdens on future digital data storage systems. The resulting performance bottleneck can be substantially reduced by conveying high-speed data optically instead of electronically. A novel active pluggable 82.5 Gb/s aggregate bit rate optical connector technology, the design and fabrication of a compact electro-optical printed circuit board to meet exacting specifications, and a method for low cost, high precision, passive optical assembly are presented. A demonstration platform was constructed to assess the viability of embedded electro-optical midplane technology in …

Point Source And Non-Point Source Pollution In A Secondary Stream: Nutrient Concentration And Fecal Microbe Counts In Tates Creek, Madison County, Kentucky, Walter S. Borowski, Krisopher H. Carroll, Bethany Gabbard

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Nutrient concentration and fecal microbe counts are elevated in Tates Creek, a stream that emanates from the town of Richmond, KY, passes by a conventional sewage treatment plant that discharges into the stream, and winds for 13 miles through pastureland and a series of small communities on septic systems before entering the Kentucky River. The sewage treatment plant shut-down operations during our study and we monitored dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate), fecal microbes (total coliform and Escherichia coli), and stream biota before and after treatment operations ceased. Sampling occurred 4 times in both 2011 and 2012 between May …

Differential Effects Of The Hydrophobic Surfactant Proteins On The Formation Of Inverse Bicontinuous Cubic Phases, Mariya Chavarha, Ryan W. Loney, Kamlesh Kumar, Shankar B. Rananavare, Stephen B. Hall Nov 2012

Differential Effects Of The Hydrophobic Surfactant Proteins On The Formation Of Inverse Bicontinuous Cubic Phases, Mariya Chavarha, Ryan W. Loney, Kamlesh Kumar, Shankar B. Rananavare, Stephen B. Hall

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prior studies have shown that the biological mixture of the two hydrophobic surfactant proteins, SP-B and SP-C, produces faster adsorption of the surfactant lipids to an air/water interface, and that they induce 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (POPE) to form inverse bicontinuous cubic phases. SP-B has a much greater effect than SP-C on adsorption. If the two proteins induce formation of the bicontinuous structures and faster adsorption by similar mechanisms, then they should also have differential ability to form the cubic phases. To test this hypothesis, we measured small angle X-ray scattering on the individual proteins combined with POPE. SP-B replicated the doserelated …

Emerging Technology Monitors Ice-Sea Interface At Outlet Glaciers, Timothy H. Dixon, Denis Voytenko, Chad Lembke, Santiago De La Pena, Ian Howat, Noel Gourmelen, Charles Werner, Björn Oddsson

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Recent melting in Greenland and Antarctica has led to concerns about the long-term stability of these ice sheets and their potential contributions to future sea level rise. Marine-terminating outlet glaciers play a key role in the dynamics of these ice sheets; recent mass losses are likely related to increased influx of warmer water to the base of outlet glaciers, as evidenced by the fact that changes in ocean currents, calving front retreats, glacial thinning, mass redistribution based on satellite gravity data, and accelerating coastal uplift are roughly concurrent [e.g., Holland et al., 2008; Wouters et al., 2008; Jiang …

Albert Einstein In Switzerland: The Education Of The Most Famous Swiss American, Kurt Winkler Nov 2012

Albert Einstein In Switzerland: The Education Of The Most Famous Swiss American, Kurt Winkler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The most famous Swiss American, by far, was Albert Einstein. It is well known that Einstein worked in Germany starting in 1914, but he was forced to leave in 1933 as someone the Nazis had "not yet hanged," and he came to the United States where he taught at Princeton University for many years. However, Einstein had earlier lived in Switzerland for many years. Even though he became an American citizen in 1940, the great physicist retained ties to Switzerland, and he kept his Swiss passport all his life . Einstein spent his most productive years in Switzerland where he …

A Gap Analysis Of Meteorological Requirements For Commercial Space Operators, Nicholas J. Stapleton Nov 2012

A Gap Analysis Of Meteorological Requirements For Commercial Space Operators, Nicholas J. Stapleton

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Commercial space companies will soon be the primary method of launching people and supplies into orbit. Among the critical aspects of space launches are the meteorological concerns. Laws and regulations pertaining to meteorological considerations have been created to ensure the safety of the space industry and those living around spaceports; but, are they adequate? Perhaps the commercial space industry can turn to the commercial aviation industry to help answer that question. Throughout its history, the aviation industry has dealt with lessons learned from mishaps due to failures in understanding the significance of weather impacts on operations. Using lessons from the …

Calibration Of Multibeam Echo Sounders: A Comparison Between Two Methodologies, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber Nov 2012

Calibration Of Multibeam Echo Sounders: A Comparison Between Two Methodologies, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Multibeam echo sounders (MBES) are widely used in applications like seafloor imaging, fisheries, and habitat mapping. Calibration of acoustic backscatter is an important aspect of understanding and validating the performance of a MBES. Combined transmit/receive beampattern calibrations were performed on a 200 kHz Reson Seabat 7125 MBES in the acoustic tank of the University of New Hampshire utilizing two different methodologies. The first methodology employs fixed standard target spheres and a high accuracy/high resolution rotation mechanism. This method, similar to that proposed by Foote et al ["Protocols forcalibrating multibeam sonar", J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117(4), 2005], is designed for a …

Potentially Polluting Marine Sites Geodb: An S-100 Geospatial Database As An Effective Contribution To The Protection Of The Marine Environment, Giuseppe Masetti, Brian R. Calder, Lee Alexander

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Potentially Polluting Marine Sites (PPMS) are objects on, or areas of, the seabed that may release pollution in the future. A rationale for, and design of, a geospatial database to inventory and manipu-late PPMS is presented. Built as an S-100 Product Specification, it is specified through human-readable UML diagrams and implemented through machine-readable GML files, and includes auxiliary information such as pollution-control resources and potentially vulnerable sites in order to support analyses of the core data. The design and some aspects of implementation are presented, along with metadata requirements and structure, and a perspective on potential uses of the database.
